The drivetrain was pretty stone-age for 1987; the Iron Duke mated to a 3-speed automatic. This was a standard drivetrain for the S-10 pickups back in the day. It's built to spend a lot of time puttering around at low speeds in subdivisions, not wound out on the highway. A lot of mail carriers in rural areas opted to use their own 4x4 vehicles so they could effectively deal with icy, snowy, or muddy back roads.
Yeah, I’d say these did their intended job extremely well! Although I could definitely see why one would use their own vehicle, these don’t deal with dirt roads, or heavy rain super well from what I’ve experienced.
@Satsuma1 oh wow I didn’t know that! It does make sense though, even in regular dirt roads this mail truck struggles. I couldn’t imagine it in mud. Would be cool to see one of those jeeps in person
Yes, they briefly trained us on them during the LLV training day. We mainly played around with the controls and then were taught about all the blind spots but they let us drive them for like 5 minutes. Much much smoother than the LLV, but far too many blind spots

Truth! I rode school buses from 2003-09 and we never had ac on them 😂
Out here in the deep ozarks mailmen drive jeeps beacause of the rugged roads. With a normal mail van you would get stuck in the first mud puddle.
