  • EN. I did a short day hike around Hirvisuo marshlands near Oulu, almost but not quite in actual Lapland. Skiing conditions were beautiful: frozen top layer carried my OAC KAR 147 skin-based skis perfectly. Weather was not too cold; pine and spruce trees had a gorgeous layer of frost on their needles.
I stopped for a short lunch break and fired up my wood stove before completing a circle route and returned to my car.
Apologies for the horrendous sound coming from my ski bindings, they are in desperate need of maintenance!

FI.

Nice views but lets be honest, those "skis" are horrible. Short and wide when they should be long and narrow. IDK who's idea they are but it is clear there is absolutely no understanding of skiing there.
Long ski is easy to ski, it has good glide and speed and it wants to go straight - those silly things don't do any of that.
And when someone with those things comes to your tracks and ruins them... I must say it makes you angry. Why in Finland, in a country where skis developed and evolved to near perfection a century ago and modern skis almost 50 years ago? I don't get it.

"Skis" is a wrong term for these, I agree, but they are not snowshoes either. It does not translate to English very well (skin-based skis), and Finnish term is clumsy also. Thus I use term "skiing" as it is most familiar to people who are not aware of differences in snowshoe/ski types.
I always tell people that they should consider these as snowshoes that you can sort of glide on top of snow. It's not really skiing but it's not walking either. These "skis" do not really make sense for this kind of open bog where long forest skis would be much better, but in dense forests they really shine.
