Of course, the best mound visit ever occurred in Ball Four, Jim Bouton's book, when Seattle Pilots' manager Joe Schultz went out to the mound to talk with pitcher John Gelnar during a Spring Training game (I think they trained in Arizona). Gelnar thought Schultz was coming out with "the hook," to take him out of the game. So Schultz gets to the mound...... "Gelnar.....did you see the rack on that broad in Section 12?" Second place goes to Jim Palmer, as related in the late umpire Ron Luciano's book The Umpire Strikes Back (Or it might have been his 3rd book, The Fall of the Roman Umpire). Palmer had put a couple guys on base late in a game against the Tigers, and Al Kaline was coming to bat. Palmer and manager Earl Weaver had a definite love/hate relationship. So Weaver came out to the mound, and as soon as he got within 10 feet of the mound, Palmer started shouting at him, "Stay the **** off my mound, you ****ing pipsqueak. I know I just put two ****ing runners on base. I know we're only up a ****ing run. I know who the **** is coming up to bat. I know what the **** to throw him. Now turn the **** around and get your ****ing ass back in the ****ing dugout and leave me the **** alone."
