It’s so funny how most of them say no no i can’t speak English and then proceed to answer all questions in English 😂. I’m a foreigner in China, i try so much to encourage most of my Chinese friends to speak English because they can actually.

Many young Chinese people can understand simple English for daily communication. The reason why we are reluctant to speak it is because we pay more attention to grammar and are afraid of making mistakes and misunderstandings. So you will find that when we are asked whether we can speak English, we generally say no, but when you really communicate with us , you will find that we can understand and communicate a litle (some are good at English)~

Because the purpose of most Chinese people learning English is to take exams, there are very few opportunities to really communicate with foreigners in English. In actual communication, we are also used to the thinking of coping with the exam. We must say a sentence without any grammatical and vocabulary mistakes, otherwise I would rather not say it.

Actually nowadays most Chinese people speak good English! Esp youngsters about 20s or something in China can speak perfect English to be honest. Reason why most of them say they do not speak English is bcuz there is a major difference in the understanding of “speak a language or not” between Chinese people and foreigners lol. Most Chinese think that if you speak English, that means you’re fluent speakers that can speak confidently, barely with mistakes or accent. Moreover, there is a core Chinese value, to be humble and modest, so instead of bragging about our personal capabilities we are more likely to say that “just so so” just to be nice and thankful to other people’s compliments.

When I lived in China for 2 years, about 10 years ago, for my multinational company, when I was out alone shopping and needed to find someone who could help me, I would find a teenager or college student. They could usually speak English well enough to help me translate. Except for at work, anyone over 40 spoke near zero English. With time, I learned numbers, food names, and places. With that limited Chinese vocabulary, and occasionally phoning a friend from work, I could pretty much go anywhere and do anything I wanted. I was actually often approached by very young children, like 10 or 12, who would greet me in English and wanted to talk, likely to practice. Their parents would often pull them away or even scold them, likely telling them not to speak with an adult foreigner. Unfortunately I often could not communicate with them that it was okay…I did not mind.

I watched a street interview in Japan ,even Japanese studied abroad and speak English so well ,they are also very shy to speak English in public in Japan, especially have a strong American or British accent ,they transform it to Japanese accent, not to stand out, very Japanese style

I think it’s more that they feel uncomfortable with displaying a lack of proficiency in public, especially when it is being filmed. To be fair, after a few drinks in a social setting, things would be different

Yep. A lot of people in Shanghai can speak English cause there are a lot of businesses doing business internationally and their are loads of foreigners who have been living there, so knowing English useful. Night and day difference compared to other tier 1 cities.

Tbh, Mainlanders are poor at speaking English. I'd say slightly worse than Japanese and Koreans. If you go to 2nd or 3rd tier Chinese cities you will barely find someone capable of holding a conversation. Rural areas English is almost non existent. Hongkongers, Taiwanese and Singaporean Chinese however have much better command of English.

Makes more sense for the Chinese to learn Japanese than English. Their countries are next to each other and would be more useful than English in that region. But, I suppose it is also good to be able to learn English as well since it is used so often around the world.
