  • As a long time rider of the 1290 Super Adventure S (and now R) this is the first time on a mid-sized adventure bike for me. How the 2021 KTM 890 Adventure feels for someone that rarely rides anything smaller than 1000 cc and how it compares to the 1290 Super Adventure is topic of this video? How does it stack up? Would I consider downsizing to a mid-size adventure bike?

I had a Pan America Special for a year and a half. It has issues, I'll leave it at that. Directly after the PA I bought a 2018 1290 SA-R from the dealership as I needed a capable ADV bike. The 2018 version was too large for me, I'm 5'8" with a 30.5-31" inseam and in my late 50's. So I traded for the 890 Adventure S model. I haven't been doing serious off-road riding but I've put over 4,000 miles on it in three months. It is a highly capable mile muncher. You do notice a difference at first from the larger bikes but it doesn't take long to adjust to the 890. Most fun I've had on a bike since I was a kid. I also love the black & orange version, to each their own. lol

Thanks for sharing your experience and journey that brought you to the 890. I am on my third 1290 and last time around I thought hard about the 890 vs 1290. I still do a good amount of road riding where the 1290 is great. The off-road parts would benefit from a lighter bike. So maybe down the road I will go for something lighter. It would be the R version though 😉

@pinkiewerewolf I've been riding 32 yrs, the same height/inseam as you 165#- I've had the multistrada 1200S, streetfighters V4S, etc and I love the power but I really need a middle weight bike that is manageable to navigate in and out of a tight garage space, has reasonable power and comfort for a daily commuter, AND is decent for 2 up riding (wife is 5'3" 125#) - My daily commute is 30 miles each way of twisty mountain roads - And I love just shooting into town on the weekends with my wife - what's your opinion for my situation?

    • @pinkiewerewolf
      @pinkiewerewolf 11 місяців тому

@@duca503 I would highly recommend a KTM 890 in any of their variations, based on you and your wife's sizes. I have 9K in 7 1/2 months of solo riding with plenty of 500 mile days. Especially for maneuvering in tight places.
If you can't do without blazing speed for long distances I'd give a newer 1290 KTM a look. It won't be as maneuverable in tight places but they have lowered the seat height and the height/weight of the fuel when they made the changes a year or two ago. It would be a better 2-up travel bike because of the increased power and physical size of the bike.
Other bikes I'd look at would be the Triumph Tiger line up.

Great review. I've been given an 890 adventure whilst 1290 S is in for it's 18k service. Like you I'm really impressed with the engine. Feels like there is more usable power and it doesn't feel lacking. Lots of midrange torque so takes off in 5 and 6 gear on the motorway. I use my 1290 for commuting but also long distance (done two ironbutts this year) so not looking to change but it absolutely has its place. If I ever need a lighter bike this would be on my list.

Thanks for the balanced and fair review. I like that you mention that most of thing’s that you’re not used to or that aren’t as good as your 1290S/R’s are just that, things you’re not used to.
As an 890R owner who came from a 1090R and 950Adv, I think you’d be more comfortable with slower pegs as the would make the bars feel higher and the seating position feel about the same size as the 1090/1290. For me the 890 “felt” small when I first got it, but you get used to that pretty quick. I prefer the bars as far forward as possible to aid in off road control. But ofc that’s a bit of a compromise for seated road riding.
You really need to try an 890R off road with decent tires! You’re welcome to take mine for a spin if you’re ever in Norway ;)

Overall nice review especially from someone riding a 1290 SAR like myself. Putting the ugly looks of the 790/890s aside, I seriously considered getting one. It is too bad you did not have a chance to test ride the 890 R version, as that would have been a much better comparison. Also I hope you recover soon and will maybe be able to test ride the 890 Adventure R off road!
The main drawback on these bikes compared to our „old“ 1290s is Euro 5 and the sound (or the total lack of it)!

Thanks for your review. This spring I changed my 1290 SAS (previous a 1190) for a 890 Adventure S and I am still very, very happy with it. The reason was the 1290 is for me to heavy for offroad riding. I am 1,75 and rond 70 kg so littlle mass compareerden to the mass of a 1290.. For me the 890 is more agile. The seat is hard but I got used to it. I did allready 12.000 km and no technical issues. I changed the Avon tires at 1600 km to the Michelin Anakee Adventure and recently to the Motoz GPS. The 890 is also very fuel economic. Stay safe!

Hi there, great video and very impartial.. I'm 62 and I bought a 2020 Ktm 1290 super adventure S, it's a great bike but I found it a bit too tall, I even bought boots with big heels and soles but if there's a slope on the road at traffic lights etc when I need to stop I was stressed out. The 1290 is heavy for an oul fella to move around the garage too. I took a 2022 Kttm 890 adventure for a test ride and I was overjoyed to be able to plant both feet on the ground.. As you reported there are compromises but the 890 is much easier to handle than the former model 1290 S (ballast from fuel low down ).. I collect the 890 on Friday. Also, what is the helmet you wear? Please keep up the good work. Kindest regards, Gerry from Dublin

Also, the R version of the 890 Adventure may be completly different - especially if you are riding the 1290 SAR now this may be closer to what your are looking for. Then again - if the road is where you spend most of your time it is hard to beat the big 1290 in comfort and power - I am not bothered by the weight at all on pavement - off-road the lighter 890 will be better or more difficult terrain. I really liked this bike when I test rode it earlier in the summer, except for one thing - the screen. It is terrible. I got lots of buffeting on the top of my helmet. I'm not particularly tall either and the screen was apparently on it's highest setting. It was brutal at certain speeds. You can only adjust the screen with the bike stopped and you off it, using tools which is absolutely ridicalous. What were KTM thinking? It has more than enough power for the road. I test rode it back to back against a SDR 3.0, the Beast which feels even smaller. I wanted to ride an 890 Adv R but the dealer only had one and that was not a demo bike so wouldn't allow me out on it. I think it looks ok. IIRC the Rally with QS option was another £800.00 which I think is a bit cheeky of KTM.

Thank you Alex for sharing your experience. I am sure there are aftermarket wind shields that will work better than stock but KTM really dropped the ball on the height adjustment that requires tools - who does that in this day and age 🤔 so, what are you going to do?

Dude I like most of your video's. But this time it is almost annoying how you keep mentioning "small", "downsized", "midsized" or how surprised you are... etc. You seem to refere to a 1290 as the normal size since you drive it, and everything smaller as less. IMHO that is a common problem in bikeland, where people do ego buying because others might think you are not the real deal or less of a man.... or worse, men calling a lighter bike a girls bike? Yikes, imagine being short sighted like that...
In the KTM streetrange I'd consider the 390 as light, 690-890 as medium and heavier than that as oversized.
    Don't judge, love em all...

First off - thank you very much for your feedback rather than just leaving a dislike! I did not intend to belittle smaller cc bikes - I think the mid-size adventure category is actually hitting the initial intend of an adventure motorcycle much better nowadays as the the "top of the line" bikes which are still get bigger and heavier. The 700-900 cc category is especially interessting for those whose spent a lot of time off-road. In this review I was merely giving you guys the very first impression of riding the 890 adventure from someone that has only ever ridden large cc motorcycles - this was indeed the very first time for me to ride an aventure bike smaller than 1200 cc - no judging just sharing the experience from that vantage point ;-) If I had the funds I would love to add a smaller cc adventure bike or even a 250-350 cc enduro to my current bike. Ride Safe!

@@aarsenalfan I am on my third KTM but so far it has been the 1290 series - which is for the moment the best fit - however, off-road a smaller lighter bike would sometimes be a better fit ;-)

Small engine???? You only need a street bike. This is for some serious off-road. You could drive a Corvette on the "off-road" you took. You don't need a 1290 either. Just go by a Harley Dresser it will suit all your needs
