Hello Mike Russell. May I say THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! I have a Pro sound man who sets up my sound in my closet/booth for my different mics. I moved a while ago and he couldn't seem to get it 100%. It was definitely good enough to put out broadcast quality, but something was missing. It just didn't have the punch. I stumbled upon one of your vids about your ENCN and I totally absorbed the video. I have figured out that If I apply the ENCN after my sound setup, IT FREAKIN ROCKS IT!!! It now has that punch that I am lacking. But for some reason that I can't figure out, I can not save my history of these settings. I have tried to find a solution on UA-cam but can't find one. I would really like to have these four settings on a hotkey but get a message stating that history can't be saved. If you can help me can you send me a note at joewieseavoicetalent@gmail.com? I would really appreciate it. Thanks again!!!
Thank you for this great tutorial. Easy to understand not even single word wasted in 5 minutes You are the master. Could you do a tutorial how to improve text to speech robotic sounds more natural I record some text to audio using auto generated read aloud services . Which I need for my projects.Thank you again
Hi, thanks for the compliment. At this point in time the sometimes unnatural sound of text to speech is a limitation of the technology. What you can do is to try and work with changing the rhythm of the speech by inserting or reducing space between words to try and create a more natural flow.
Excellent thank you! Might have asked this in another one of your videos - where in this chain would you throw in the noise reduction, and once or twice? We should use our ears, but what's good practice? Use-case: voiceover with a good USB mic (Rode) with unfortunately little gain in a well-treated space. Appreciate it. 👍
Ideally you wouldn't use noise reduction at all as any noise reduction is going to reduce the quality of the audio. If you have to use it then you want to use it at the start before processing. There are two schools of thought on this, some say use it once, others say run two passes with lower reduction.
hey this is a nicely put together vid and explanation. you should do one that show show to make a voice over that someone records with their iphone better. this happened to me recently. seems to have no bass and all mids in it.
@@MikeRussell yep but sometimes people dont listen when you tell them that and you're forced to deal with it. I found myself in this situation recently and although not ideal it was all they had to record with and i found it hard to make it sound decent.
Hi, I would recommend trying to "repair" the audio as the first step in the processing so you'd want to get a denoise in as early as possible to give you the best possible audio to then enhance.
Certainly! Normalizing twice can help ensure that the audio levels are consistent and optimized for the final output, especially if there are varying levels throughout the recording.
Great stuff Mike, question, why do you use the top menu drop-downs and not the Effects Rack workflow on these? Just curious the ins and outs of what you show vs the ER workflow... also, I noticed that some of the effects are NOT in the ER, so is that why? Is it because you don't have to apply, they just do when used from the top menu? Just a student looking to learn... Cheers.
@@MikeRussell Thank a lotttt. Btw, since I mostly do audio editing for my outdoor vlog, so maybe one suggestion for you to make a tutorial for noise reduction (windy scenario and vibration problems), esp for outdoor scene audio. Thanks againnnnn.

Hi Mike, thank you for this great tutorial. One question, how do you do this in the multitrack view? The latest version of Adobe does not have an “apply” button in the effects rack so I can’t ENCN because I can’t normalize while the effects are loaded in the effects rack. I would really appreciate your help!
How you work in waveform and multitrack is very different. The effects in the effects rack of a multitrack session are applied when you mix down the session.
Hey Mike, I just bought a Rode Podmic and when I hooked it up to my camera I was getting very low levels and then I realized I should have bought a cloudlifter. Anyways, as the cloudlifter is still in transit I tried using XLR to USB cable to connect it to my computer. In my first recording I got very good audio but I'm not happy with the second recording. Will it improve with a cloudlifter? Secondly, how do i decide my threshold and ratio in compressor settings. Thank you mate, your videos are really very useful.
Hi, the cloudlifter should give you ample clean gain on your microphone and hopefully this video will explain all you need to know about compression ua-cam.com/video/lUBLxU9GZPA/v-deo.html
This is great for relatively well recorded clips but how do you improve the quality of an archive recording that is quite low in levels and has lots of background noise, eg whirring from the old cassette mechanism that the tape was recorded onto.
To enhance the audio quality of an archive recording with low levels and background noise like cassette whirring, utilize noise reduction tools in Adobe Audition and consider applying EQ adjustments to balance out the audio.

To remove heavy echo without causing voice distortion, try adjusting the DeReverb effect.

How can I use the "Normalize -1" in a Multitrack-Session? (it its greyed out)
Normalise only works in the waveform, not in multitrack. Multitrack is non destructive editing.
So where would things like noise reduction and restoration techniques fit into this process, for example if I am running a noise suppressor plugin?
The idea is that these wouldn’t be needed by getting a decent quality recording. The use of any noise reduction technique degrades the quality of the audio.
If they absolutely must be used then they would go at the start of the process.
