    Very well said. I liked the discussion much. I was previously a canon shooter having EF 24-70 II with my 5D III, I sold all my gears and move to fuji X-T2 for less weight and easier to carry. The kit lens is very nice but i like the 16mm than 18mm and I alway thought about the 16-55 f/2.8. But later I bought 16mm f/1.4 prime for my fuji and it serves me very well. In my last travel I brought both 16mm f/1.4 and 18-55, i used both but in most cases 16mm f/1.4 i used. I used that one in night, i used that to take environment portraiture, landscape, cityscape. And XF 16mm only weight 375g and kit lens 305g. Whereas this 16-55 weigh 655g. So this thing also need for consideration. If you really like 16mm focal length I suggest to buy 16mm f/1.4 which serves very well, in other cases you can use 18-55. So my gears are now:
    - Fujifilm X-T2
    - XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS
    - XF 35mm f/2 R WR
    - XF 16mm f/1.4 R WR

    I've mostly been using fuji primes but I recently bought a second hand X-T20 with the 18-55 in a kit for good price and man I am so impressed by that 18-55 lens, small, compact, great stabilization, beautiful rendition, fast focus. So much bang for the buck!

    This makes me feel like I got an even better deal than I thought. I purchased a X-T20 with the 18-55mm in December 2019 for $799 new. The package also included full Corel suite, cleaning kit, Lowepro shoulder bag and 16gb Sandisk SD card.

    Sir, I never ever comment on Gear Channels. Except now, because you really are phenomenal. About me, in a nutshell: self taught photographer, my very first camera was the Canon EOS 50e (indeed, I caught the last wave of analog Pro Work). I then went Canon G2 (4mpix)-->10D, 20D etc...Canon 5D Mk 1 (the best FF camera to this day, to me). Eventually I stopped buying or careing for gear at all, post 5D Mk 2 mostly complimented by the 24-105L F4. My "carreer" got restrained back to a hobby, but for this to even happen, 25 years after my auto debut of sorts, it took a Fuji Xt-20 in kit w the unpretencious 16-50 3.5-5.6 Lens (+ a couple of the wonderful Chinese ones, a few days later), to catch my eye by virtue of plain chance and pure Photographic Joy - the Bug re-conquered my system, in truly unexpected ways. Will never go back to a different brand, I don't imagine the case to be, ever again. I still have the Canon SLR's, I have turned in about 5 people to Fujifilm in about 3 years. And I intend to to it further, as enthusiasm, of all things, can be an Inspiration, nowadays. That being said, all due Respect! And best regards, from Bucharest, Romania. Right now, I share a X-t4 - X-t30 - Cam A+B self sufficient setup, and a number of fav lenses, mostly manual, mostly Chinese. I don't ever intend to keep more than 2 cameras in my own house ever again, for that's not It - also, that's just me. Much more prefer to make gifts, nowadays. But that's besides the point. Fuji really is a brand to Love, and I Do. All of them! UNfortunately, their own glass is mostly outside my budget, that being said, i own the 18-55 2.8 - 4, and it Might be the best kit lens ever made.

    18-55mm can shoot weddings better in My opinion.
    The 16-55mm will be better in image quality but the bigger size defeats the purpose of having a light weight set-up in My opinion.
    bigger size means more obvious in weddings(not gonna get more candid shots) etc. etc. specially with the lens hood.
    choosing the 16-55mm means you just got back from DSLR set-up, weight wise.
    plus with the money you'd save, you can buy 2-3 used fuji primes. or 1-2 brand new ones. glass glass glass.

    Pro gear is designed to take a beating and bring home the bacon. When I am out on a paid gig, I need to have the confidence that my gear will work -- day in and day out. You are right on the money when you ask "What are you going to use this for?" I often see people trying to use pro grade gear and getting crappy results because it is the wrong tool for their needs. "The Best" is a relative term.
    Thanks for your great, no bs videos.

    Ken. Watching this video again in January 2018, I have to say that of all the videos you've made this is definitely one of your best. Sound advice extremely well delivered. Whilst I enjoy your usual trade mark theatrics as much as the next guy, this more considered approach really works well. :)

    I have the 18-55, and the 18-135 Ken....I had and sold the 16-55 (brilliant lens BUT) it was the just as brilliant and more useful 18-135 that I choose 99% of the time! The 18-135 is so damn sharp!

      Hi Jonathan, Im very curious. How is the image quality of 18-135 compared to 18-55 and 55-200. I currently have these 2 lenes and barly use it but when I do, I find that prime lens on 18-55 is much better and 55-200 on the long end need a higher aperture for sharp images. Are images of 18-135 are sharper or equal 18-55 and 55-200 at the same aperture?

      +Tana Pirapokin Hi Tana, the 18-135 is one of the sharpest lenses I've used!! Sharper than the brilliant little 18-55, just.....saying that, you really can't go wrong with any Fuji lenses! They're all brilliant! Here's a link to my Flickr!

      Jonathan Fletcher Hi Jonathan. OK, I only have the XF16-55, and have never used the 18-135, but nevertheless, based on personal tests and copious research on these 2 lenses, can say with some certainty that the 16-55 f/2.8 is sharper than the 18-135, at comparable focal lengths, period. True, the 18-135 is a better "all-in-one" zoom if you shoot more telephoto than wide-angle. But to say it's sharper than the superb 16-55 is misleading at best.

    • @jonfletcher147
      @jonfletcher147 7 років тому +1

      I've got the 16-55, 18-55 and 18-135. Across the majority of the frame they are all exactly as pin sharp as each other. My 18-135 is cutting sharp when pixel peeping. The 16-55 is 'marginally ' better in the corner BUT basically I could take a shot with ANY of these lenses and nobody would tell the difference.....(unless shot at 2.8 on the 16-55 ;)) they're all equally sharp. Now I've sold my D810 with Nikon 2.8 glass, now there's many glass snobs out there.....the f4 lenses in most cases are actually sharper and render better than the 2.8 brothers IMO.

  • @Carrot_Handler

    Fuji's primes are soooo good that I just don't care about the zooms my kit has:
    - XF 16mm f1.4
    - XF 35mm f1.4
    - XF 56mm f1.2
    - XF 90mm f2.0
    I plan on getting the XF 23 f2.
    The only Zoom I am interested in are the 10-24mm and maybe the 100-400mm... But I have NO use for them, I just want them.

    Started watching your channel 3 months ago and ordered the Fuji X S10 with the 16-80 f4 today. I have become totally fed up with Leica although I still own three of their cameras Thanks for helping me make the jump. Screwed by Leica big time over the Leica M9 Sensor. I had corrosion on one sensor and they replaced it only to have a repeat on the new sensor. They refused to do anything with it after that.

    After researching a bunch (including your video) I ended up purchasing the XT3 with the 16-55mm instead of the 18-55mm.
    I am primarily using it for cinematography/ indie films.
    This was the logic of my purchase:
    16-55mm has a fixed aperture which is all around better for video when I zoom and focus in on certain shots. It also has better overall image quality, even if it’s subtle compared to the 18-55mm. The 16-55 quality is also arguably good enough to match the primes in its range for film, making it completely versatile as a all-in-one lens for all the shots I need. The hardest decision came to sacrificing the OIS, which makes the 18-55mm seem like a no brainer decision for video, but since I will be filming shots on a gimbal or tripod fluid head, I figure that will compensate for the lack of IOS in the 16-55mm, so that takes care of that issue.
    Overall: quality > iOS / gimbal compensates for lack of iOS.
    Winner for video imo: 16-55mm

      @TechReflex 5 років тому +2

      brock b I chose 16 to 55 for UA-cam videos too, people don’t mention this, but the 16-55 also has faster and better focusing motors, very important if you plan to use AF-C, which I do all the time with eye detect. I also shoot mostly at 35mm where 3.6 aperture is too low for indoors.

    I have to go ahead and disagree about weather sealing. I started with Pentax, had OMD’s and now Fuji. You can leave an xpro2 with a weather sealed lens, outside in a massive thunderstorm without worry. I shoot in adverse conditions. Not weddings. Look at the F-Stoppers review where the entire camera and 16-55 got dunked in the ocean, or his 2 hour shoot in a “typhoon.” I’d try to avoid that, but for heavy mists that bead up all over he camera, crashing waves, blizzards (yes a mega-blizzard is my favorite time to shoot), going to beaches with blasting sand, dust, deserts... you cannot beat sealing. 100% foolproof? No. But to compare it to fraudulent rust coatings on cars is absurd. You get what you pay for. Watch online as people take dirty OMD or Fuji’s and put them under a spigot to rinse them off. It’s all a hoax ??? Lol’s

    • @brockb4452
      @brockb4452 6 років тому

      But not the variable aperture. 16-55mm will give much better video, so long as you have it on a tripod or a gimbal. That fixed aperture is a deal breaker

  • @jwxujerry

    I had the 18-55, but returned it because it's soft for me. My travel kit is 16/F 1.4 and 56/F 1.2. They are super lenses. I have the 16mm on 90% of the time and then use the 56mm for some stealth shot of people on streets. For everything else, I use my iphone. I have been tempted to buy the 16-55 so that I don't have to switch lenses frequently. But it looks big and it's damn expensive. I need someone to tell me it's a good idea to buy the 16-55 for travel.

My recommendation for travel is 16-55 with xt4 and the small rig L brancket with peak design shoulder strap. Your pictures are going to be beautiful and you’ll be happy that you did the purchase.

    I agree man, I have seen people buying weather sealed lenses and camers (a7r4) yet rain has destroyed their gear. The more water resistance the better, but people buying water sealed gear should still think twice before taking photos in the rain.

    • @matt88169
      @matt88169 10 місяців тому

      Yes it destroys the 18-55 in that respect. Only problem I have with 18-55 is AF performance is not up to par for serious event work. Btw the 16-55, all else equal, can run faster shutters, I.e. I think the t-stop beats the 18-55 at equal f/stops and ISO settings. So slightly better / lower noise as the lighting gets worse. Also better flare control/contrast in backlighting. Frankly he could have done a better job making it clear that the 16-55 is a cut above, period. It is expensive and heavy, yes, but the most manageable red badge lens by far. AF performance alone is worth it.

    Great common sense stuff! Really entertaining too.Stumbled on your channel looking for X-T2 reviews. I made the move to Fuji last year X-E2s and since I did my EOS kit has remained in its bags.You know why? An aperture ring! The 35 and 16mm f1.4's on my X-E2s took me way back my OM2/OM4 days, so tactile, bright, rewarding and just great to use - far better than scroll wheels. So, now I'm All going all in with an X-T2, so I can recapture my OM youth!

      @@tscholent thanks for your kind reply. Bought the 16-55. Ultimately it’s the wrong choice for me. It’s so freaking heavy. Sold it all. Got myself a Leica M and a 28mm and 50mm and I’ve never been happier.

    For that price I'd rather stick with an adapted 16-50 2.8 sigma that I already own. Not sure how far off the size difference is either. I love my 18-50 and i'm just not sure it's worth it

    So these lenses are so good that there's no comparison shown of the pictures that each lens took.Is that because you can't compare due to the cost difference of the lenses which would render the review as a bad match like comparing a 1200 dollar fender guitar against a cheap chinese 200 dollar fender copy.We would just look at them and discuss what we would buy it for but not actually plug them in and listen to the sound.

    I find that 18-55 relatively soft.

      Get the 18-55, its almost as good as any prime imo, unless you need a wide aperture and I mean wide, not desire. 18-55 will do it all for you, esp for travel.

    The 18-55mm f2.8-4 can easy match 2 or 3 of the Fuji primes..... very good allround lense.

    I desperately tried to love the 18-55, but ended up getting the 16-55 because it's got the proper aperture ring. Spinning and spinning an endless encoder just feels imprecise. I also dislike the focus ring having this characteristic, however there's no real other option in the zooms.
    That clutch mechanism in the primes? Mmmm...

    16-55 for me is a more versatile lens. You pay more, it weights more, but in the end my setup is around kg lighter than my previous dslr with a 24-70 f2.8 lens, plus I have image stabilisation on my X-S10

    "It's the equivalent of a Nikon 24 -70 f/2.8" well no. From the look it gives you it's a 24-70 f/4 equivaltent. Fullframe lenses like that (i.e. Canon 24-70 f/4 L) cost new as much as the fuji lens costs USED. Now tell me fullframe doesn't matter. I don't get why those crop lenses are so expensive.

    Is the aperture affected by the crop factor? like a 1.8 is supposed to be 1.8x1.5 on a DX sensor?

    FUji lenses pretty shitty. especially 23mm f2. disappointing sharpness. Also no optical stabilization in them, slowest shutter speed with fuji is 1/125 to be pretty sure it's not blurry.

      Learn the right settings and what and when to shoot. Sold big prints for big money made with "shitty" fuji lenses on older Fuji cameras😁
