I'm gonna be completely honest here I finished the album 10 minutes ago and I absolutely loved it. I wanted to hate it but I just thought Wayne worked amazing with rock instrumentals. I might be a bit biased since my family members are mainly rock listeners except for my stepdad who listens to Eminem. He was playing lose yourself all the time on the TV and that's how I really got into rap over the last year lol, but yeah I'm probably a bit biased since I love rap music to death and my family is also a rock family so I naturally love rock rap as well. This was the 3rd Wayne album I listened to (TC3, TC4) and so far I've been in love with all 3 of them and I'm definitely gonna try to listen to all of his solo projects
I respect that! I’m glad you were able to get a lot more out of it than I (and a lot of others) did, and that you didn’t let that cloud your own judgment or determine your own opinion on it. I hope you enjoy going through the rest of Wayne’s discography. I think he can be a bit inconsistent, but he’s got some gems. I personally love TC5, and I hope you enjoy that when you get to it!
Awesome! That's honestly a great thing. I'm glad the album was able to do something for you that it didn't do for me. No one review or opinion is fact, and music is extremely subjective, so it's all about what you make of it and how you feel about it. Even if I didn't enjoy the album, I'm glad you were still able to.
Yeah, exactly. I can respect when an artist experiments and goes for something entirely different than expected. It won't work for everyone (like this album for me), but again, the beauty of music is that not everyone has to like the same thing, so it could definitely work for others.
Yeah, I agree that Juice and Peep did it far better. I think that's generally what time does, though: more time allows for sounds and styles to be pushed forward more and more.
Bruh you hating! He can use auto tune if he WANTS! I use to rap and Wayne was my favorite rapper and I use to LOVE autotune as well! American star and on fire and so over you are the top 3 but I like them ALL! Like wayne said it went GOLD so someone bought it 💁🏾♂️
Might not be a great album but still good in my eyes. This album is impactful to the rap game in today’s day as Wayne crossed barriers and experimented that no other rappers would do during that time. So he paved the way for a lot of rappers in today’s day.
I mean hey, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I do think it was interesting to see Wayne try something that few actually made a genuine effort to do before. Most of the time, rap and rock crossovers just felt like gimmicks. If nothing else, this felt like a somewhat earnest attempt to do it (even if I didn't totally enjoy it). That style would obviously be refined with a lot of the emo rappers, but regardless, Wayne does deserve credit for paving the way, even if the album remains hated by a lot of people.
The fact that I don’t really want to do one. Plus I don’t tend to do full reviews of many past albums anymore (TEN YEARS LATER is now a year-end segment, not a regular segment dedicated to individual albums), and even if I did…it’s a 2011 album and the time for me to look at 2011 albums in this series has long since passed.
I was on a lil wayne nostalgic listening spree a few days ago, after I was done with TCIII, this album came up and I said "I forgot about this album, I'll give it a listen even tho I remember not liking it when I was younger", 5 songs in and all I wanted to do was rip my ears off 😆, the songs were horrible, Wayne's autotuned fucked vocals were unbearable, the instrumentals were ok but very generic, overall pretty awful experience. Ironically the only good song of this "rock" album was a rap song with Em 😂
My feelings exactly! I'm glad some others in this comment section enjoyed it, but it was the rare album that actually made me feel physical pain when listening to it (specifically hurt my ears lol). The loud, brash instrumentals and Wayne's overuse of autotune...just didn't mix for me. Wayne's autotune is usually fine, but on songs like these, it just doesn't work. And yeah, I agree, Drop The World is a good track, but it is super ironic that a rock album's best track is a rap song lol.
Yes, and I did say in the video and in the description that it was my favorite song on the album. One song doesn't make an entire album good, unfortunately.
I think this was the right decision. The auto-tune kind of fucked it all up, it was pretty much done with by 2010. Other than that, this is kind of experimentation is necessary for musicians who want to keep evolving. Look at Radiohead's KID A, an electronic album that followed what was at the time maybe the best rock album of all time and as a result were at point of being unable to evolve their rock sound. Wayne probably felt at that moment he could no longer evolve his rap sound.
I understand that, and I respect artists who experiment and don't stick with one sound. That said, as much as I can respect an experiment from afar, I don't think experimenting by itself is automatically enough for me to praise an album, because experiments can obviously go extremely wrong. Otherwise, they wouldn't be called "experiments." I'd like to believe you on the thought that Wayne didn't think he could evolve his rap sound any further, but given that he largely fell right back into the rap sound (other than random genre-bending tracks like How to Love here and there) and treated Rebirth as a one-off thing, I wouldn't be surprised if even he felt this experiment went wrong.
This album was so good it might be Wayne's worst album but it's better than lot artists whole discographies. I enjoy drop the world, on fire, prom queen, knockout, da da da, running, paradise, one way trip, American star. Basically the whole album is a masterpiece I don't really get the hate on it
The album made me feel physical pain listening to it multiple times for this video. I have no desire to go back to it. I'm glad you enjoyed it more than I did, but we won't all have the same opinions.
Oh really, Tha Carter IV is worse? Hmm...I'm gonna be checking that album out for this series later this year, but I've heard wildly mixed things. Guess I'll just have to see for myself.
@@MattsRandomJourneys Still I have clocked in hundreds of hours listening to Wayne’s albums and mixtapes. For me he is still the G.O.A.T and will always be no matter how bad an album may be reviewed.
Oh yeah, for sure. I've been hard on a few of Wayne's records that I've reviewed, but I'll never deny his talent and his impact. I feel like there are so many modern rappers today that really might not be here or might not sound the same if not for Wayne paving the way for them. Sure, he has some duds, but there are plenty of rappers with discographies as inconsistent as Wayne's that are in the G.O.A.T. conversation (Eminem and Drake are two that jump to mind for me). No matter how many Wayne albums I give negative reviews to, I'll never deny that he's one of the best to do it and is one of hip-hop's most influential figures.

I mean, that doesn’t surprise me. Critical and commercial success are not mutually exclusive: there are albums people love that have struggled to sell, while there are hated albums that have sold like hotcakes. The way of the music world. Also helps that Lil Wayne was at a huge high point in his career at the time, coming off of Tha Carter III and No Ceilings, so there was obviously gonna be huge interest in his next project.
@@MattsRandomJourneys I do agree he was the top rapper at that time meaning the album had a lot of hype surrounding it and therefore he would get a lot of views but for being his worst album in terms of ratings and still going platinum is pretty great in my eyes.
