I sold my 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan as a young teenager for $75. Took that profit, went to my local card shop, Dal's Dugout, and spent $75 on packs of 1986 Donruss. I didn't even pull a Canseco..... Scarred for life!
Hey Graig, thanks for sharing my comment and giving your insight. Watching your videos compelled me to be honest and open with that comment. I hope it helps someone out there. Your platform helped open a conversation with a wise person that offered me great perspective and advice. Thank you for that. I still believe this hobby could be special and I hope to see that through. Thank you for your efforts in staying connected to your viewers. Your videos are comforting, and always, a joy to watch. Can’t wait for your live stream! My top current football hall of famers that will NEVER be forgotten Payton Manning ,Randy Moss, Brett Favre, Deion Sanders, John Elway, Dan Marino, Emmitt Smith, Barry Sanders, Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Walter Payton, Terry Bradshaw, Joe Greene, Mike Ditka, Roger Staubach, Joe Namath, John Unitas, Bart Starr, Jim Brown, and although controversial, O.J Simpson.
If I had to shorten that list to a top tier Mount Rushmore type of list, four undeniable hall of famers in card collecting it would be Jim Brown, Walter Payton, Joe Montana, Jerry Rice.
Enjoy TODAY, Graig! You’ve created a wildly successful channel, you have a slew of great hobby friends, and you collect the right way (yes, I said it- there IS a right and a wrong way!) Your channel has brought knowledge and joy to countless collectors, and that alone is reason to be happy right now! No one knows what tomorrow will bring, so living in the moment is indeed a great thing.
I loved this therapeutic video, Graig! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐We recognize that no man is a regret island! I have no clue what that means, so I'm already regretting typing it! 🤣🤣👊 One cool way to deal with regret: Go buy that dream card! 😊👊
I sometimes disagree with some of your discussions, but I mostly do agree and enjoy all of your long-winded views because I understand things better with issues I'm on the fence with. You (Graig) have the best vintage channel going right now because you're personable, explain in detail, and are down to earth. Keep up the good work my man as it helps us all.
Hi Greg, happy new year! Great job with your channel! Hobby greats that will never be forgotten: Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe Dimaggio, Jackie Robinson, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Roberto Clemente, Pete Rose, Nolan Ryan, Rickey Henderson, Bo Jackson, Ken Griffey Jr., and Derek Jeter Obviously there are many greats, but these seem like a solid top tier.
What I DID do from you last few videos is to create a "want" list to guide me in my purchases. That was extraordinarily important to me as I was all over the place. I'm now focused! New Years resolution to hopefully last the entire year!
Hi Graig, I was watching one of your video's recently about buying cards out of your comfort zone. I picked up a 1970 Topps Johnny Unitas cards this past weekend. The following players will never be forgotten are Ruth, Mantle, Ted Williams, Joe D, Nolan Ryan, Cobb, Ripken, Clemente, Jackie. These names came to me right away. All of these players are collected by a lot of people. I thought about these names right away. I cannot wait to hear the panels answers.
I have trained my brain to tell myself that there will always be another card. It might take a while but then I just move on to other cards and then circle back. But....if I've never seen one that I've been looking for before, I usually buy it if I have the funds available. Great video!!!
Hey Graig, great topic. Here are the top tier HOFers in the hobby that will never be forgotten: Ruth, Jackie, Mantle, Aaron, Cobb, Jordan, Mays, Cy Young, Clemente, Gehrig, Dimaggio, Pete Rose, Ted Williams, Satchel Paige.
I made myself come up with a list of 10 for the HoFers that will never be forgotten. I also polled my wife, who named all of my 10 within her first 20-25 choices. It was hard to exclude so many (Ty Cobb, Lou Gehrig, Honus Wagner, Ted Williams...), but I had to go with only 10... In no particular-ish order: Cy Young, Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Ken Griffey Jr., Mickey Mantle, Nolan Ryan, Randy Johnson, Rickey Henderson. This was a really fun question to consider.... Thanks!
Awesome video, Graig! Welcome back from vacay! I look forward to your livestream! I'm glad you were able to translate all the typos in my response. Wow, that was bad! I'm sorry I didn't proofread it before submitting it!🤣🤣
Top tier HOFers in my opinion: Cobb, Wagner, Mathewson, W Johnson, Gehrig, Williams, DiMaggio, Mantle, Mays, Clemente, Koufax, Banks, F Robinson, Rose (I know), Seaver, N Ryan, and Bench.
My list of the hobby relevant icons, now and forever are: Babe, Mickey, Jackie and Jordan. The End. Unless you want to consider non sport! Batman, Superman, Darth Vader & Mickey Mouse!
Great video! I can relate to about every regret mentioned . My top tier HOF hobby related are: Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Christy Mathewson, Honus Wagner, Cy Young, Joe DiMaggio, Jackie Robinson, Ted Williams, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron , Sandy Koufax, Roberto Clemente. There are several HOF players whose rookie cards will always be iconic cards in the hobby, but outside of their first two or three cards they aren’t pursued in the same as as those on my list. This group would include Johnny Bench, Tom Seaver, Nolan Ryan, Ken Griffey Jr. . If only a handful of the players cards are sought after, can they truly be considered a top tier HOF as far as the hobby is concerned? People buy/ want ANY card from those who are in the top tier not just their first few or Rookie. That doesn’t devalue their accomplishments. If anything, I think it points to the difficulty it is for any hobby top tier HOF player to come from the era that overlaps with the “junk wax” era and later. When the availability of cards, rookie cards included, is so overwhelmingly greater than the demand, where does that take the hobby? The only place it can, to older, vintage cards. Part of the reason for collecting is to have something that not everyone else has. Having a Griffey Jr upper deck rookie graded a PSA 10 with a pop count of over 4100 isn’t as enjoyable as owning a 1933 Goudey Lou Gehrig #92 in a PSA 3 with a pop count of 221. I also think that with few exceptions the top tier players are going to be there for their hitting and cultural importance and pitchers will have a difficult time making the top tier. That’s all just my opinion though and not really worth anything.
Great conversation and thoughts. I regret a few cards that I have sold over the years. To mention a few, an early UD Kobe Bryant on card auto redemption. I sold that for $75! A 1953 Topps Mickey Mantle in a PSA 3.5, that one went for $2500, and lastly a Michael Jordan 86-88 Fleer 2nd year card in a PSA9, for $125! At the time the $$ helped me out to do a few necessary obligations so I guess it wasn’t too bad? Top Ten players that will be always talked about and brought up are; Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle, Clemente, Aaron, Mays, Robinson, N Ryan, R.Henderson, and lastly Mike Trout, if he ever wins a championship! Thanks Graig
Top Tier for hobby are Ruth, Cobb, Mantle. Their cards are worth more than their peers by a wide margin and have been since the 80s when I started. Players that will never be forgotten are a larger list in addition to the hobby top tier - Shoeless Joe due to the Black Sox scandal, Maris and Aaron due to breaking Ruth’s record, Rose due to hits record and gambling ban, Jackie for breaking the color barrier, Cy Young because his name is on the award, Williams for being the last .400 hitter, Bonds for breaking Ruth’s record and Ohtani for his two way play. Unfortunately some of my favorites like Banks and Mays among others probably don’t make this list. Forever is a long time.
I found that like a showboat, I really went over my 2024 budget. So discipline wasn’t my great strength last year. But except for a couple of cards, that didn’t look as nice in person as on the screen photos, I don’t regret any of the purchases. I negotiated with the seller often if it was on eBay. And if I wasn’t comfortable with the price then I usually passed. So if anything I got a lot of negotiating experience. But this year I’m sticking to my budget and specifically map out what i want and what I want to pay and grade very little. Austerity is my friend in 2025. Thanks for doing this vid.
Graig, good question. I don't think the top tier hall of famers who won't be forgotten will help with, the why are so many collectors not interested in Rocky Colavito or Ted K, though. I do have a list of players that I believe won't be forgotten. However, since John (Wade Boggs Fan) does VR's to your weekly questions, now. I don't want to give away my answers, or influence any of his. I mean inspire! Mostly joking, on that last part lol. But he does do well thought out VR's.
Happy New Year! Guessing there will be lots of answers for baseball. One of my goals for 2025 are to pick up a couple massive vintage basketball cards. Here are my thoughts on "timeless" basketball players: Tier 1: 1) Michael Jordan: I think answers will vary based on the generational age of individuals... but MJ at #1 is an absolute staple among all generations 2) Lebron James: he gets alot of hate, but I hate to admit that he's easy/clear #2 Tier 2: 3) Bill Russell: legendary team, championships and humanitarian 4) Kareem (Lew) Abdul Jabbar (Alcindor): legendary team, championships, civil rights, Bruce Lee 5) Magic Johnson/Larry Bird tie: elevated the NBA during the 80s. I feel they go hand in hand 6) Wilt Chamberlain: 100 pt game. Playboy. One of the 1st players to be ahead of his time IMO Tier 3: 7) Stephen Curry: Love or hate him… he changed the way someone like him needs to be guarded. Best pure shooter and its not even close 8) Kobe Bryant: MJ clone and will be known for his tragic and sudden death 9) Shaq: Big men these days are compared to Shaq bc he was the 1st to have unbelievable athleticism as a big man. Biggest personality outside basketball 10) Dr. J: most popular during ABA/NBA merge. windmill dunk. Tier 4: 11) Hakeem: the dream. One of the first international players with amazing D and titles. Aided his country in Africa. Created affordable shoes 12) Tim Duncan: Won championships and showed fundamental play can dominate during a big man era. Quiet persona, otherwise I feel he'd be higher on the list 13) Jerry West: NBA logoman. Most popular NBA GM. Great player Next few players or honorable mention would be Moses Malone, Bob Petit, Bob Cousy, Pete Maravich, Allen Iverson and Oscar Robertson. Took into consideration a mix of basketball prowess, championships, timeless moments, domestic impact, global impact and notoriety to the public eye.
I love this comment. Would also add, George Mikhan. Not sure, which tier/or honorable mention, but I know he's often considered as the first NBA Superstar. And his rookie card...is iconic, imo.
@ I thought hard about Mikan. He was dominant during his time and revolutionized basketball early in its inception inside the paint. But globally, notoriety, and pizzaz just wasn’t up there for me. Just my opinion… I’m not accounting for card values, in which he’d be a tier 2 imo
Great video. I tried to do a top ten players, that end with Rickey. Certainly others after, but I think these are good. Tough to make a list, though! Honus Wagner Babe Ruth Lou Gherig Mickey Mantle Sandy Koufax Ted Williams Jackie Robinson Hank Aaron Roberto Clemente Rickey Henderson
Sorry ... one last change for me ... I am in LOVE with buying autographed cards. Especially from 71, 72 and 73. It's very enjoyable to get the guys that you knew growing up!
I vote for these top-tier all timers: Baseball - Wagner, Cobb, Ruth, Jackie, Mantle, Basketball - Mikan, Russell, Chamberlain, Alcindor, Bird and Magic, MJ, LeBron Football - Thorpe, Nagurski, Brown, Namath, Montana, Brady, Mahomes Hockey - The Great One, Ovie
One regret I have is years ago I had a good collection of sportscards (all were raw) and all of them were rookie player cards including a Pete Rose, Willie Stargell, Ozzie Smith, Rickey Henderson and other players. It was during the last crash on the prices of sportscards when most cards were going down in value. I decided to sell all my card collection to the local card shop and just told them give me what you can for the collection. I think I got around $250-$300 for more than 50-75 cards...I should of never sold the cards! Worth a lot more today...the Pete Rose rookie alone is worth well over $1000. What I learned is to not just take anything for your collection. Hold onto them. I understand that you dont get money by holding them, but eventually, if you do some research on the cards and wait, the cards may go up in value and you can sell them then.. For the cash I did get for the cards on the sale, It just didnt pay to get the cash right away. You just have to be patient and not just take anything for cash...most likley you will regret making the deal down the road..I have since started a new collection of sportscards and have NO inkling to resale. Ill just hold them for a long time and enjoy them.
Hobby regrets ... 1) Focusing on buying that one minor league guy that is a "can't miss!". So, I spend over $2,000 in Wander Franco cards, $200 in John Jaha cards (going back in time), and many many others. Don't waste your time and money. 2) That I didn't buy vintage cards when they were affordable. That $250 1959 PSA 5 Hank Aaron was only $25 10 years ago! So what to do now? I'm buying the HOF stars from the early 70s and sitting on them until they pass away (morbid, but true). I'm currently doing Mike Schmidt, Nolan Ryan, and looking across sports (i..e Julius Erving, Moses Malone, etc.). Lots of these guys are in their late 70s now. You can get great cards at great prices that will be worth alot more 10 years from now.
great video. as to answer your question, i have a good list i guess. past time to present day. I feel there are alot of top tier guys and honestly it was hard to choose exactly. but trying to keep the list somewhat short here are my picks: babe ruth cy young mickey mantle ty cobb ted williams carl yastremski roberto clemente nolan ryan derek jeter
My new 2025 goal is setting a budget for each month and depositing that money in a separate account so I always know what my budget is. Here’s to my savings journey to acquire the 54’ Topps Aaron to complete the set 👍🏼 🍻
Graig, I’ve thought about this for Football. I think it’s incredibly sad that this list is so small and will be mostly Quarterbacks. But I think it reflects times gone by and typical attention spans of most people. They forget the past way to fast. Human Nature. Here’s the short list of names people will recognize. Jim Thorpe, Red Grange, Sammy Baugh, Otto Graham, Jim Brown, John Unitas, Bart Starr, Joe Namath, Dick Butkus, Terry Bradshaw, Roger Staubach, Walter Peyton, Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Tom Brady. Some may want to add more, but the list is mostly QB’s. I look at names that were big not to long ago that I hear very few people even talk about. Like Marino, Elway, Dickerson, E. Smith, Barry Sanders Bret Favre, and I could go on and on. There are many vintage guys I can bring up that were great also and nobody outside the hobby talk about. Great topical question and really makes me wonder
Top-Tier HOF’ers. That’s easy. Start with the first class. Cobb, Ruth, Johnson, Mathewson, Wagner. Best of the best. 2nd class not too shabby either, including Mack, McGraw and a guy by the name of Cy Young. Add Gibson (both of them) and Satchel, shut down the ballots, and I’d still go to that museum.
So happy that you liked the Everett Scott. For an ugly strip card, I thought it was pretty good looking. Who will be remembered? My informal rule of thumb is, if somebody cannot be recognized with one name, they probably won't be widely remembered fifty years from now. Talent or accomplishment is not enough. Babe (or Ruth), Gehrig, Mantle, Jackie... no need to check Baseball Reference. Thinking about modern players, who fits that description? Griffey? Sure. Rose? I think so. Ichiro? Judge? Ohtani? Those would be my guesses. It takes more than performance to capture the Zeitgeist, so it would not surprise me if more people remember Canseco than Wade Boggs in the year 2065.
I think the most popular players in the history of baseball are Cobb, Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, Mantle, Mays, Robinson, Aaron, Rose, Ryan, Henderson, Griffey, and Jeter. The football list is Starr, Brown, Namath, Bradshaw, Montana, Elway, Rice, and Brady. Magic, Bird, Jordan, Kobe, Shaq and LeBron for Basketball. Gretzky is the only player for Hockey
This is tough, simply because you have to stop the list somewhere. I decided to stop my list at 20, though it could easily have been 50 and a list of 50 players wouldn't be of much use to you. The latest player was a rookie in 1989 and there will be others later than that who won't be forgotten. But I stopped at 20. I even had to cut Christie Mathewson, Tom Seaver and Roger Clemens from the pitchers because I could not leave out Johnson, Cy Young, Koufax or Ryan. Here's my list. Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Shoeless Joe, Walter Johnson, Cy Young, Joe Dimaggio, Ted Williams, Jackie Robinson, Stan Musial, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Roberto Clemente, Yogi Berra, Sandy Koufax, Nolan Ryan, Rickey Henderson, Ken Griffey Jr.
@@alltimesportscards Somehow I left out Jackie Robinson. I added him and reluctantly cut Johnny Bench. There are so many more, including the steroid sluggers, but I had to be brutal to keep it at 20.
I sold my 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan as a young teenager for $75. Took that profit, went to my local card shop, Dal's Dugout, and spent $75 on packs of 1986 Donruss. I didn't even pull a Canseco..... Scarred for life!
OUCH!!!
Brutal.

Hey Graig! Will I see you at the Sacramento card show on Saturday?
I'm planning on being there!!
Selling 100 cards for 1 card. Adavantages of a private deal, I got plenty of time to get the funds together

Looking forward to putting a list together.
I'm looking forward to checking it out.
Happy New Year! Guessing there will be lots of answers for baseball. One of my goals for 2025 are to pick up a couple massive vintage basketball cards. Here are my thoughts on "timeless" basketball players:
Tier 1:
1) Michael Jordan: I think answers will vary based on the generational age of individuals... but MJ at #1 is an absolute staple among all generations
2) Lebron James: he gets alot of hate, but I hate to admit that he's easy/clear #2
Tier 2:
3) Bill Russell: legendary team, championships and humanitarian
4) Kareem (Lew) Abdul Jabbar (Alcindor): legendary team, championships, civil rights, Bruce Lee
5) Magic Johnson/Larry Bird tie: elevated the NBA during the 80s. I feel they go hand in hand
6) Wilt Chamberlain: 100 pt game. Playboy. One of the 1st players to be ahead of his time IMO
Tier 3:
7) Stephen Curry: Love or hate him… he changed the way someone like him needs to be guarded. Best pure shooter and its not even close
8) Kobe Bryant: MJ clone and will be known for his tragic and sudden death
9) Shaq: Big men these days are compared to Shaq bc he was the 1st to have unbelievable athleticism as a big man. Biggest personality outside basketball
10) Dr. J: most popular during ABA/NBA merge. windmill dunk.
Tier 4:
11) Hakeem: the dream. One of the first international players with amazing D and titles. Aided his country in Africa. Created affordable shoes
12) Tim Duncan: Won championships and showed fundamental play can dominate during a big man era. Quiet persona, otherwise I feel he'd be higher on the list
13) Jerry West: NBA logoman. Most popular NBA GM. Great player
Next few players or honorable mention would be Moses Malone, Bob Petit, Bob Cousy, Pete Maravich, Allen Iverson and Oscar Robertson. Took into consideration a mix of basketball prowess, championships, timeless moments, domestic impact, global impact and notoriety to the public eye.

@@juhosevic That's Fair!
Really great choices. Oscar bein HM is rough!!
Great video. I tried to do a top ten players, that end with Rickey. Certainly others after, but I think these are good. Tough to make a list, though!
Honus Wagner
Babe Ruth
Lou Gherig
Mickey Mantle
Sandy Koufax
Ted Williams
Jackie Robinson
Hank Aaron
Roberto Clemente
Rickey Henderson
Some really great choices in there.
I have a couple hobby regrets over many years of collecting. They usually cost me 15-20K to correct and feel whole.
Definitely Freddie Lindstrom, Ross Youngs, Harold Baines, High Pockets Kelly, Ray Schalk and future HOFer Billy Wagner will round out my list!
Gotcha.
Sorry ... one last change for me ... I am in LOVE with buying autographed cards. Especially from 71, 72 and 73. It's very enjoyable to get the guys that you knew growing up!
I agree. It's super fun.
I vote for these top-tier all timers:
Baseball - Wagner, Cobb, Ruth, Jackie, Mantle,
Basketball - Mikan, Russell, Chamberlain, Alcindor, Bird and Magic, MJ, LeBron
Football - Thorpe, Nagurski, Brown, Namath, Montana, Brady, Mahomes
Hockey - The Great One, Ovie
GREAT list.
My card for HOF… is early Derek jeters! 1992 prospects
Haven't heard the name John Jaha in about 30 years. Lol...he was a minor league legend.
great video. as to answer your question, i have a good list i guess. past time to present day. I feel there are alot of top tier guys and honestly it was hard to choose exactly. but trying to keep the list somewhat short here are my picks:
babe ruth
cy young
mickey mantle
ty cobb
ted williams
carl yastremski
roberto clemente
nolan ryan
derek jeter
Terrific list. Thanks for sharing!!
What a fantastic list!!
Back from paradise looking tan and healthy LFG!
🤣 Love it.
Agreed.
I LOVE the Everett Scott. Thanks again!!
Graig, my top tier would be.....Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle, Jackie Robinson, Michael Jordan, Tom Brady, Wayne Gretzky.
Great choices.
These are some really great choices.
Many of us would probably watch more if not always almost an hour long!
My channel isn’t for everyone. I totally get it. No hard feelings.
There is one name that most people that are commenting are leaving off. I’m not going to say which one it is, but it is blowing my mind. Haha
I can't wait to find out.
Who? Jordan?
Please start a new series called "Short Story Long" 😂 I'm envisioning a 90-minute single topic discussion. Me: 🍿🥤
A decent working alternative name to 'Short Winded,' I think.
@ACD1994 'Gone With The Winded'?
@@W238thStreet I think that could be a good title for Graig's live-streams, but while walking
LOL. I thought that was EVERY episode!!
@@MidLifeCards 😹
This is the best list I've seen so far.
@@alltimesportscards Somehow I left out Jackie Robinson. I added him and reluctantly cut Johnny Bench. There are so many more, including the steroid sluggers, but I had to be brutal to keep it at 20.
That's a great list.
Oops. It's a HOF list, so I must cut Rose. Stan Musial makes the cut.
