i tend to just look at most disorders in the same light and just ask the person things they can and can't do to be on the safe side then if that person becomes someone i see regularly then i look into it more and read up on it
"This plot is mostly forgettable" You can say that again, as you were recapping what happened I was mentally conflicted on whether or not I've actually seen this movie because of what I remember vs what I don't.

Oh no, I was looking forward to this review so much (because I haven't actually watched the movie) but then the warning came up right away :( Thank you, however, for adressing this issue... You can't imagine how much I appreciate that. Too many content creators nowadays don't care putting up warnings for things like epilepsy and the likes, and it's much more common than one might think. Well, I guess it's a good thing then that I decided to not watch this movie in cinemas back when it came out! Greetings from Germany ♥

Hi long time viewer first time commenter I was wondering if you would consider if you would do a Lost in Adaptation of The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. Book was released in 2005 Movie was released in 2013. I would really like to hear your thoughts on the book and movie. please let me know as soon as you can (sorry if that sounds pushy I don't mean to be). I look forward to hear from you thanks. PS hope living in the US go's well.
Is Multiplicity {Michael Keaton} based on a book? {IMDB says "short story"} because I feel you've been quite influenced by that film and it would be nice to see a review :)
The thing about "the colony" having more space but the cities seeming as if not more crowded, could be excused by saying it's population is situated in a similar manner to Australia now; meaning that most of the population is along or near the coast, with the outback having sparse permanent human settlements.
I remember really liking the first 15ish minutes of this movie, the design of his apartment was cool and the elevator thing was neat, if silly. Then the plot started.
The crying scene still bugs me, it just makes no sense! Also i love that Terrence, the douchebag from RavenClaw, is now the wizard from "A wizard did it" a title that fits oh so well.
Here’s my Total Recall moment...I’ve seen this movie...twice, and forgot until I was halfway through this review that I had seen it before. When the Dom said it was forgettable, he wasn’t kidding!
Thank you so much for specifying photosensitive epilepsy. The amount of times I have to explain to people that yes, I have epilepsy and yes, I am going to a club and yes, I will be safe and yes, I do understand it will be flashy there. Honestly drives me insane
Thanks for including the strobing lights warning. I'm not sensitive to it, but I know people who are and I often worry about them walking in when I watch shows.
The Terrence cameo at the end is exactly why I would never want to skip one of your skits. Yet another great episode of lost in adaptation, keep up the good work
I'm just going to say this. Thank you so much for mentioning a photosensitive epilepsy warning in this. I suffer from it and I just recently started to go through your reviews having recently found your channel and the fact that you put such a warning when the studio that made it did not means a lot.
Hell, this could be in the same universe as Minority Report.... could this be an attempt at making a cinematic universe based on Dicks works? A Dickverse?
Oooo, was that slight gruffyness in your voice a part of your role, or were you ill at the time? It makes your dystopian character just a tad more badass.
I remember seeing this movie when it came out in theaters and walking out thinking that the whole movie was created with the attitude of "hey did you see that thing we did? Remember that? That was cool"
Honestly the fact that you put a warning for epilepsy really meant a lot to me. People leave that out so much and while I don’t have epilepsy, I do have triggers that are similar that sometimes makes my face twitch painfully and my eyes hurt. Bombastic sounds and strobing of flashing lights are definitely a problem and if they surprise me it gets so much worse. So it was really nice that you thought about that :)
Consider me impressed and pleased with your video format: the appearance of multiple Dom persons was, indeed, most riveting! I am a very satisfied watcher!
15:50 I have no problem with this. More Dom is always better there's no such thing as too much. Now all we need is to pick Number 6 Dom up from the HarryPotterathon and The Dom canon multiverse will be complete.
yeah, I had a lot of trouble with the two female leads looking so similar. I have not great eyesight to start with and them both looking so alike made it so hard to tell if the goodies were winning.

I was hoping you'd reference the scene where Quaid and Mac quote the book: "An illusion, no matter how convincing, is sill just an illusion." Did you also notice that Quaid is reading a James Bond novel on the Fall? Film Brain put it best when he noted that the original smartly serves as both an example and parody of the over-the-top mindless action flick since part of the plot involves a fantasy centered around such things. This means that Quaid has paid Rekall to be Arnie or it's that he really IS Arnie and so would do just these things. Adds more fuel to the ambiguity.
I think that the makers of the reboot were extremely clever - by replacing the trip to Mars with a train that goes right through the core of the Earth and then destroying said train they managed to put an _actual_ train wreck inside a train-wreck of a movie... _very_ meta! Wait... that _wasn't_ deliberate? Well, damn!
at the 8:13 mark, the plan that the Colony has space the Federation could use, but it looks more crowded than the Federation; that's why the army of robots was necessary, to kill everyone in the Colony and free up all that space for Federation residents. I did love the visuals on this movie, the idea of building up since theirs nowhere else to go, the tetris looking buildings, the magnetized freeways so one can drive above and below the roads, the hand phones, fun stuff.
The fact that Kate Beckinsale's character spends the entire move with her hair down drives me crazy! I am a woman with long hair and I personally can't stand in in my face which is actually why I have it long so I can put it in a bun or ponytail. Just watch the action scenes, besides making it easier to switch her out with a body double it is always in her face! How does she see? They should have been able to kill her right away because she was blinded by all of her hair! At 5:06 you can see that her entire face is covered, there is no way in a real fight she would have know were everyone was.
There's actually a reason for that, which i learned from pro wrestling. long loose hair makes movements more dynamic, particularly strikes to the head, the swinging hair giving the illusion of a much harder impact.
Oh I understand that and flowing hair can be seen as sexier, it is just something that as a person with long hair bugs me like nails on a chalkboard. That is probably more about my hang ups then anything else. I know they also probably did it to help differentiate between the two female leads, I agree with The Dom should have made one blond or something.
not that i'm really arguing with you, having long hair down from an irl fighting standing probably presents many fighting weaknesses. and any obstruction or possible distraction is not optimal... but can you not see through your hair? most of the time it's like the bloopers in the original mario cart, yeah it's in the way but honestly you can see through/around it i can comb my hair so i look like cousin it and still see
Agree 100%. I've had long hair my whole life and I tie it up whenever I'm doing anything more strenuous than a casual walk. I'm so tired of women in action scenes with long flowing hair when that would make no goddamn sense. But men don't think hair tied up is sexy, so of course that usually takes precedence. It makes me so happy on the rare occasions when you see a character tie up her hair before fighting.
If she doesn't have long hair, how are you supposed to know she's the girlfriend? It's like in Venom when they casted a lady with short hair to play a character with short hair but gave her an ugly wig so you're not confused.
Totally forgot they had rebooted it. I never saw it, and I'm glad I didn't now that I've watched this review. You definitely hit on all the points they messed up on. For sure still have that special place in my heart for Schwarzenegger films :)
Could you please do a Lost in Adaptation episode on any of the following: -How to Train your Dragon -Holes -Alex Rider -Hoot I would really really appreciate it.
You said from 9:14 on, "What's very interesting about this film is that it seems to take a lot of influence from other adaptations of Phillip K. Dick's books, like Minority Report and Blade Runner. Sort of an amalgamation adaptation of adaptations." Personally, I think this sounds appropriate for an adaptation of Phillip Dick novel. There were more than a few elements and themes that he included in his stories. Different forms of government in no way connected to our own today, the appearances of some kind of representation of god and sometimes an anti-god character, aliens who know more about the plot than you do and are not very helpful, reality degradation, and so on. Adaptations all borrowing from other adaptations to create common movie themes and images in Phillip Dick adaptions sounds homage-like to me. Awesome reviews as always, all three of them.
One thing I liked about this film, is that if you look carefully, the tattoo he gets before the implant is missing after it starts. Meaning everything in the film is the memory he wanted to have.
the problem this movie has is that Paul Verhoeven directed the first movie......his brand of dark comedy/social commentary is so good nothing can beat it. I did enjoy the aesthetic this 2012 movie had but that is it. two female leads are pretty nice
When this was coming out, I knew when they kept trying to justify its existance by saying it was "Closer to the source material" that it would be even further from the story, because thats always the case
I've just discovered your channel and love your analysis. While watching, I got MAJOR Chris Barrie vibes (love that man) and it was confirmed here, this is Ace Noble... What a guy...
All our money has become self-aware and confessed it's love. Well, there's an interesting scenario. Also love your videos, and so glad to see Terrence again.
My god, the scene when he takes the hologram off his wide to reveal her face instead of his girlfriend I didn't even realize what happened for a second
If I ever wanted to see a more faithful adaptation of the short story it would have been David Cronenberg's Unmade script of 'Total Recall'. Nonetheless, I do consider the setting for this film as a poor futuristic recreation of Australian colonization over British rule, not to mention as an Australian I'm offended they did nothing to hinder this film with anything Australian in it. You could've just had Earth and nothing else in it and it wouldn't have made a difference. Thanks for all three videos Dom, keep up the great work.
Well done on the "other self" interactions. Except for the plodding shuffle off screen. I get it, but after taking the whole thing half way seriously, I then have to chuckle to myself that you all may be part penguin...
Ah yes, Barry Burton Dom. You know what that means... "What IS IT?! "That was too close! You almost became a Dom sandwich." "Dom, you're here too?" "Will you take a look at this. It's the Dom. Oh my Cod." "Here's a lockpick. It might be handy if you, the Master of Unlocking, take it with you."
I really loved this film, the extended one in particular. The sci-fi is enthralling. Action is fast paced and awesome and the story isn’t so bad. I sorta think this would have been pretty good as a next gen game.
So is this how the Dom gets all his clones? From various alternate dimensions? Like he got Terrance from the "What if I were a wizard" dimension, he has TWO from the "Total Recall matters for some reason" dimension.... so which dimension is Reginald from?
I love cultural differences. I wasn't sure what war you were talking about for half a second because we refer to the "American war of independence" as the Revolutionary war lol.
Honestly, had this film used a different title and instead sold itself as an all-out tribute to Phillip K. Dick, it actually would have worked better, cause it feels like they just took all three films, Minority Report, Blade Runner AND Total Recall and just mashed them together
I had forgotten I had seen this movie. It's what I call a "Smudged" movie. The memory of it is there but it's all just a blur with all details having been "Smudged".
its almost as if Bill Nighy & Bryan Cranston casting choices were red herrings.... Ethan Hawke showing up for some reason makes me see this movie as tryin to tie into Predestination, even tho that one is from 2014!
I'm not sure it's entirely fair to blame the reboot's failure _entirely_ on not having Arnie. The lack of his star power and expectation-setting...ness sure didn't help matters, but this version has other issues. The biggest one I can see is all the details and plot elements hanging around for no apparent reason. For instance, people can easily accept that Earth is oppressing Mars, but changing the setting to Britain and Australia opens up all sorts of unneeded questions that either aren't resolved or aren't resolved in a way that adds anything beyond closing up a plot hole they made themselves. This isn't a problem if the change has enough positives on its own, but I can't see _anything_ it adds other than making it easier to turn the story into a bad American Revolution allegory (which doesn't fit with the rest of the story at all) and justifying the normal gravity and white casts.
I hadn't read the books or seen the 1990 film when I first watched this and I ended up enjoying it quite a bit, same as you said that the Arnie flick felt like quintessential 80s cheese this to me felt like quintessential 2000s action flick. I do think I like the older one better now because theres just something about Arnie back in the day I just find too entertaining. Still enjoyed this one tho, Farrel did a good job as a action lead in a dystopia-ish situation, and Kate Beckingsale and Jessica Biel just made the film for me, I admit that if recall existed id have skipped the whole spy thing and just got the fake memories of them fighting over me, seems like a much better and less convoluted fake memory
Great Review and comparison. A suggestion of a future Lost in Adaptation. "Jaws". Probably one of the few movies where the movie version was actually better than the book!
What is really funny is that this movie was tittled "El Vengador de Marte" (The Mars Avenger) in my country, same the Armold vercion, so this movie was called that and in no point they go to mars...
i doubt they actually thought this far ahead but i always thought the fake wife and rebel girlfriend looked so similar to lend to the it all being a dream thing because in his real world he does actually have someone he loves and she's a mix of the two in terms of looks and just my imagination adding to this possible scenario it could represent the part of her he fell in love with and the part of her that drove him to recall in the first place with her being angry and yelling all the time and them constantly fighting so he goes to get a memory in which he goes on some sort of adventure to get some idea of how to rekindle the love they felt before and again the dude suggest hey for a little extra you could get a premium package where you could be a secret double agent which leads into the main story (explaining some of the things which are like other movies because they exist in his world and little inconsistencies and dumb stuff in the film) and maybe the part where the friend goes in to convince him he's still in recall is actually real but because he wants the fantasy to be real so bad he see's his perfect fantasy of his wife hurt by the whole situation making her cry and in his delusional state he shoots his friend making him sink further into the fantasy and by the end he just doesn't want it to all be a dream so he suppresses the thought of it all being fake (which is his subconscious fighting to make him wake up or recall trying in vain to tell him it's not real) cementing his state of being in a vegetative state permanently just my thought's and general rewrite i suppose but i personally think this would be cool P.S dear reader sorry for the run on sentence I'm terrible at just ending a sentence
Hi The Dom, recently I rewatched the entire series of sherlock, I'm English and it's one of my personal favourite TV shows in recent memory (the others being Game Of Thrones and Arrested Development) just wondering could you ever compare S2 E3 of Sherlock with the short story "The Final Problem" and the film "Sherlock Holmes Game of Shadows" which both are based on the short story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and is a really interesting and famous story. The hound of the basket villas episode would be great aswell but I think this one's better asyou've got a more modern film to compare it with aswell. If you could do a couple episodes on this them would be great. Btw keep up the brilliant content as your videos really got me back into reading (I'm 16 so consider it a achievement).
I hate how vengeful Kate’s character is towards Doug, they were only married for like 6 wks yet she’s SO determined to kill him, against specific orders, simply because she thinks he’s a traitor?
Yes, I know, late to the party here and I've seen this review a couple of times. One of the things that really bugs me about this film vs. the ARnie film is that there's no longer any reason, AT ALL, for Hauser to become Quaid. That was done because Martian /psychics/. :) The whole deal with that was because Quoato could sense a spy incoming and the only way around that was to erase Hauser. Granted, that kinda falls down a little too, if you think about it too hard, but there it is. In the new one, without there being the psychic angle, no more reason to do that and any old assassin would do.
I think the scene where he shoots the guy is much worse in the new one, noticing the girl cry makes less sense than noticing the guy sweat. Edit: Holy crap, I typed this about 10 minutes in, thinking you werent going to mention it, I feel like I have heard you say it before too, or maybe someone else on CA, deja vu man.
I really hope the people who designed the visuals off this movie goes on to make some fantastic sci fi movies. Cause this is in my opinion among the best sci fi city designs I’ve ever seen, and it’s a pity it’s wasted on a forgettable story.
It seems that the 2012 movie took the plot from the movie, but the look from the TV series as well. If you want to watch something most people forgot, watch Total Recall 2070. Not too bad of a show. It real mix of Total Recall and Blade Runner with a little crime drama.
"If you're wondering why I look like this..." you're assuming we're not used to you dressing up in strange costumes lmao.
Well, if we sub in, 'so much more attractive than usual' for 'this,' it makes perfect sense.

Thank you for reminding me that everyone in this movie has a American accent even though only Britain and Australia are left in this movie’s world
All our money has become self-aware and confessed it's love. Well, there's an interesting scenario. Also love your videos, and so glad to see Terrence again.
My god, the scene when he takes the hologram off his wide to reveal her face instead of his girlfriend I didn't even realize what happened for a second
I can't help but only hear the intro music you used with "CAPTAIN BIBLE RUNNING DOWN HAAAAALLWAAYYYYYYYYS"
paul duncan Glad I’m not the only one!
I know, right?
I appreciate a good epilepsy warning, this is the last time I’ll have my screen on for the next 16 minutes.
You almost became a Dom sandwich."
"Dom, you're here too?"
"Will you take a look at this. It's the Dom. Oh my Cod."
"Here's a lockpick. It might be handy if you, the Master of Unlocking, take it with you."
"What about you Dom?"
"I have THIS."
I love the honesty at the beginning. :D
I really loved this film, the extended one in particular. The sci-fi is enthralling. Action is fast paced and awesome and the story isn’t so bad. I sorta think this would have been pretty good as a next gen game.
Bahaha, self-aware currency is my favorite reason so far
Thank you for the epilepsy warning :) my bf has epilepsy and I honestly don't see enough flash warnings anymore on television
I really like the change in tone and accent you did for dystopian Dom.
Love seeing your different personas in these! Great job!
So is this how the Dom gets all his clones? From various alternate dimensions? Like he got Terrance from the "What if I were a wizard" dimension, he has TWO from the "Total Recall matters for some reason" dimension.... so which dimension is Reginald from?
ChaosSorceror_Davidicus The butler dimension. Or possibly Discworld with the whole "Igor " shtick going for him.
I love cultural differences. I wasn't sure what war you were talking about for half a second because we refer to the "American war of independence" as the Revolutionary war lol.
Great review, Dom! I do miss some of your normal energy, but I understand what you were aiming for :) keep up the great work!
Glad to see Reginald is still alive and kicking, it's been a while since you mentioned him.
... Or is that just me?
Honestly, had this film used a different title and instead sold itself as an all-out tribute to Phillip K. Dick, it actually would have worked better, cause it feels like they just took all three films, Minority Report, Blade Runner AND Total Recall and just mashed them together
Goddammit why is Post-Apocalyptic Dom so good-looking :P
I had forgotten I had seen this movie. It's what I call a "Smudged" movie. The memory of it is there but it's all just a blur with all details having been "Smudged".
Dom, the VOICE in this episode!! I’m SWOONING 😍
I mean, as a straight female, even I wouldn't want to escape from Kate Beckinsale.
Elle De Jour Then you're as straight as a crocked arrow.
Elle De Jour *crooked*
its almost as if Bill Nighy & Bryan Cranston casting choices were red herrings....
Still enjoyed this one tho, Farrel did a good job as a action lead in a dystopia-ish situation, and Kate Beckingsale and Jessica Biel just made the film for me, I admit that if recall existed id have skipped the whole spy thing and just got the fake memories of them fighting over me, seems like a much better and less convoluted fake memory
i doubt calluna is going to have a problem with 3 copies of her man living with her.
Especially when one of them is as ruggedly handsome as Distopian Dom.
"A wizard did it."
"Of-fucking-course. TERRENCE!"
-- I choked on my soda laughing.
I'd kill to see a sitcom starring all the people who live in Dom's apartment
Instantly forgettable is the perfect description.
i doubt they actually thought this far ahead but i always thought the fake wife and rebel girlfriend looked so similar to lend to the it all being a dream thing because in his real world he does actually have someone he loves and she's a mix of the two in terms of looks
and just my imagination adding to this possible scenario it could represent the part of her he fell in love with and the part of her that drove him to recall in the first place with her being angry and yelling all the time and them constantly fighting so he goes to get a memory in which he goes on some sort of adventure to get some idea of how to rekindle the love they felt before
and again the dude suggest hey for a little extra you could get a premium package where you could be a secret double agent which leads into the main story (explaining some of the things which are like other movies because they exist in his world and little inconsistencies and dumb stuff in the film)
and maybe the part where the friend goes in to convince him he's still in recall is actually real but because he wants the fantasy to be real so bad he see's his perfect fantasy of his wife hurt by the whole situation making her cry and in his delusional state he shoots his friend making him sink further into the fantasy and by the end he just doesn't want it to all be a dream so he suppresses the thought of it all being fake (which is his subconscious fighting to make him wake up or recall trying in vain to tell him it's not real) cementing his state of being in a vegetative state permanently
just my thought's and general rewrite i suppose but i personally think this would be cool P.S dear reader sorry for the run on sentence I'm terrible at just ending a sentence
I really liked the final plot twist of the original.
I actually thought when I first saw this movie, that it was based on a completely different story coincidentally also named Total Recall. Strange.
Trivia: Before Quaid goes to Rekall, he's shown reading _'The Spy Who Loved Me'_ while riding The Fall.
Oh good I'm not the only one who thought the two women looked WAY to similar! You can easily get them confused especially during the actions scenes!
13:40 I woudl've gone with " get it because there is a lift that goes through the Earth" but hey
I've seen this set of videos several times, and in-between viewings I still keep forgetting that the remake exists.
Sometimes I tell myself "Bill Nighy played Samwise Gamgee" to see if I'm more convinced that it actually happened, but I'm not.
7:05 "I'm a dude playing a dude disguised as another dude!"
Wish colin wouldve said "consider it a divorce"
Interesting unrelated factoid: Arnie was filthy rich BEFORE becoming an actor thanks to a construction business.
I think only one thing could have made this remake better as a remake: "You think this is the real Quaid? Well it is!"
I really hope the people who designed the visuals off this movie goes on to make some fantastic sci fi movies. Cause this is in my opinion among the best sci fi city designs I’ve ever seen, and it’s a pity it’s wasted on a forgettable story.
TERRANCE!! HE’S BACK!!
It seems that the 2012 movie took the plot from the movie, but the look from the TV series as well. If you want to watch something most people forgot, watch Total Recall 2070. Not too bad of a show. It real mix of Total Recall and Blade Runner with a little crime drama.
I like your apartments. They all have charm.
