This ad did not ruin Duffy’s career. She went on a hiatus due to the horrifying thing that happened to her not long afterwards. Look it up, poor woman I’m glad she survived that awful experience.
Realmente não devia ser suficiente pra arruinar a carreira de alguém, mas esse comercial foi muito sem noção, essa música é horrível e a voz dela está péssima
I googled Duffy because I just started listening to her music again and wondered what ever happened to her and googled this is rumored to have "ruined her career" how could one stupid ad ruin a career of someone so talented selling millions of albums... i dont know.. honestly, it's not a great song for her and her vocals, but she still sounds like herself and still better than a lot of singers who are making millions ATM ;)
I think it just irritated people because it was aired so much. Although Duffy has sold millions of records, for every record she has sold there are dozens of others who dislike her "nasally" voice vehemently.
She has a lovely voice on the Rockferry album, and then came back with this horrible, squeal of a voice that sounds like a pained sheep with a cold. It's horrible. And then this advert! She sounds bloody awful on it, and it's annoying. She's nicked a bike to get away from a gig? Then rides around at night with no helmet on, no lights and through a shop. And what does any of it have to do with a fizzy drink? Also, it was played so bloody much.
mattbellamymate because it's awful. why is she stealing a bike before her concert? why are people so amazed at the notion of a woman riding her bike? why is she riding a bike through a supermarket? why isn't she wearing a helmet or reflectors? speaking of which the advert even got an investigation launched into it because it promoted unsafe nighttime bike riding.
It's awful. Everything about it is just shockingly terrible. And her voice, awful. The Rockferry album is quite good, but anything after that is just horrible. I can't listen to any of it because her voice is this horrible, squeaky, whaling thing that sounds quite like a sheep in pain. I can't bare it. It's painful sorry. I don't know why she does it, when she sings so well on the likes of Warwick Avenue.
@@Marwanaran I'm afraid it kind of did. A short while after this advert aired she released her second album, Endlessly, which was promoted with the universally panned (and incredibly nasal/whiny) single "Well, Well, Well". The album received so much negative attention and sold so badly that no further singles were released and it has since been buried deep within the vaults of A&M/Mercury Records (well, not quite but it certainly isn't available on any streaming platforms).
Many, *many* actors and musicians before Duffy have schlocked Coke & Pepsi, all with varying degrees of success. You can't fault the girl for wanting to ride the "Soft Drink Express" and make a quick buck. No, fault her for that and you have to fault every other celebrity who's ever done a soft drink commercial too. The real problem lies with commercials premise. The set up is hokey, and the song is a terrible, terrible pick for Duffy's voice. Don't get me wrong I love "I've Gotta Be Me" it's a great show tune, but for Duffy? God no. They'd have done better to give her an old R&B classic and utilize the whole retro vibe. God anything would've been better than this hot mess. A lot of wasted potential in my opinion.
"No, fault her for that" Well you can because she chose to do it and it backfired. And yes, whoever came up with the ad premises does deserve the blame, but do does Duffy. Did she not see the end product and go "hold on...this is awful". Clearly not (or she thought no one would give a damn) and so ignorance on her part helped damage (if not destory) her career. Not that anyone but diehard Duffy fans care, since many have moved on to Adele, Sam Smith, etc
Do you really believe that? Drugged at a club and taken out the country? Where were her friends? How did she get on a flight without her passport? Why didn’t her loved ones report her missing? Why didn’t she tell a stranger? Why didn’t she report it to the police? Sounds like BS to revive her career.
@@TomRipley7350you’re a disgusting person! She has been radio silent all year! She wouldn’t lie about such a thing. It’s because of people like you that victims don’t wanna come forward.
i think it just because of the brand coke otherwise i could not explain how she ruined her career. i dont't get why the brands like pepsi and coke believe if they put a face of a celebrity on their ad , that people get appealed to buy their stuff.
She recorded Mercy for a multi-group live studio album put out by the Minneapolis radio station The Current. Her voice was so bad in that that Duffy fans I knew would skip that track. I never thought much of that song anyway, it was more annoying than good, and there were so many women that sang that style better than her.
Duffy made the mistake of singing far too many songs that didn't suit her voice like this one. Going through her songs she only sung two that suited her voice, one being Warick Avenue and then she sounded great, maybe that is the reason she went down
I really can't see why this commercial should've destroyed the career of such a charismatic singer. Honestly, even as a huge Ed Sheeran fan, I've got to say that his voice sometimes sounds even more fragile and worse than Duffy's does in this commercial. Really don't get it.
The Pink Grapefruit Nightmare 1. her voice is so glaringly off key 2. what does riding her bike through a supermarket have to do with coke 3. it depicts her as nothing more than a corporate shill 4. it even launched an investigation because parents complained that it promoted unsafe night time behaviour (riding your bike at night with no helmet or reflectors)
Honestly... that's exactly what 99% of all artists do... and sure, she sounds off key...but she isn't. That's what her voice sounds like without a microphone. So what? Other artists sound exactly this way without autotune and postproduction. Instead of criticizing her for not editing her voice in hindsight, you could think about how many of the movies and commercials we're watching every single day are promoting unsafe behaviour. Your reasoning sounds pretty hypocritical to me, sorry.
... and: Sure, her voice breaks a few times in this video, but that's exactly what makes the "charismatic" sound of her voice in the records that people were so crazy about. People are so used to edited voices, that they don't even know any more how are rough voice sounds without editing.
You seriously need to get a more intelligent taste and understanding of music This is an abomination; the way she's trying to make herself sound as quirky as possible, A phenomenon created by that bitch Macy Gray who Duffy is trying to imitate here, which has caused this flood of other people trying to out-quirk e/o with their voices. A thing which an end must be put to now. We're being turned into retards by being exposed to such nonsense garbage, it is so cringey to listen to. The music industry is a joke, don't listen to this stuff that's rammed down our necks. Let's start our education with a bit of Trout Mask Replica and understand the depth and hard work involved in creating such an interesting piece of music.. ua-cam.com/video/r9lpLm7jwQY/v-deo.html
Possibly one of the most cringeworthy adverts in television history - and there have been many competitors! Nowadays, Duffy would be hard pushed to find anyone who remembers her, let alone seeing her name in letters.

this advert isn't what ended her career
Its because
It is trash
This is the real sound of the ad?
I actually like the commercial, it’s awkward as hell and funny but cute
Weird song choice, but don't understand how it could have ruined her career. Are people really scrutinising shitey Coke adverts that much?

I don't see how this "ended" Duffy's career. It's a Coke advert, cringe, but not terrible.
