The Really Dumb Reason JUST THE TEN OF US was cancelled!

- Just The Ten Of Us, which starred Bill Kirchenbauer, was a spinoff of the hit TV series, Growing Pains back in the late 1980s. Despite having solid ratings, ABC abruptly cancelled the series after it's third season leaving fans wondering exactly why. In this video, I discuss the really dumb reason ABC chose to cancel this funny series. #heatherlangenkamp #jamieluner #brooketheiss #justthetenofus
S/O to the guy on UA-cam who uploaded every Just the 10 of us episode...I've been rewatching and it's still just as funny as it was over 30 years ago.
👍
give me the link
Thanks for the reminder about the show . I'll look around😊
@@sexymama1966Type in Retrofat or even the title of the show and look for the ones by Jeremy Logsdon. Those are the best ones, with his great commentaries on the episodes.
youtube just deleted that channel!! grrrrr
Wow! While Just the Ten of Us was seemingly jumping the shark early (mostly ignoring every character not one of the four "babes"), it was a fair hit even by that era's loftier standards. Ratings weren't really even cited when it was cancelled as that came about because Miller-Boyett wanted TGIF to be all their shows as the other three in Full House, Family Matters, and Perfect Strangers were M.B. Just the Ten of Us was a Growing Pains spin-off and thus the black sheep of TGIF. ABC was saturated with aging sitcoms but still instead of doing another time slot swap, they just axed JTTOU for a new Miller-Boyett show Going Places that was a huge flop. Which is funny in retrospect because "the babes" were supposedly carrying JTTOU yet Going Places featured one of TV's all time babes in Heather Locklear. Sincerely a mistake that would erase much of the slack Miller-Boyett had earned at ABC. Even though roughly a year later Step by Step would take that slot and end up running with Family Matters as the only M.B. shows on TGIF until competing AGAINST TGIF after moving to CBS for their final seasons. Step by Step though still never hit the ratings that JTTOU did. And here are some fun facts about JTTOU: 1.) Three of the four lead actresses who played the Lubbock babes (Heather Langenkamp, Jo Ann Willette, and Brooke Theiss) appeared in the A Nightmare on Elm Street films. 2.) Matt Shakman (who played J.R. Lubbock) has gone on to find success as a prolific TV and film director. And 3.) The show's iconic theme song was sung by Bill Medley of the Righteous Brothers fame. Now you know. Thanks so much for sharing and I hope you have a safe and wonderful week! 😉😃 Speaking of TGIF, I have a very special request just for you. Can I please suggest you do a video on the reason the character of Stuart Minkus (played by Lee Norris) was written out of Boy Meets World after its first season?
Great comments as always Tarrell! And another great suggestion! Thanks!
Also moving full House to Tuesday was stupid, they should have moved perfect Strangers, and kept the younger shows on TGIF.
You forgot another fun fact, Jamie Luner joined Melrose Place and was playing Heather Locklear’s rival.
Indeed and it killed Quantum Leap and poor Sam never made it home
@@JustinW06Originally, ABC was to move Family Matters to Tuesdays in Fall 1991.
I totally agree with you. It was very dumb for ABC to cancel "Just The Ten Of Us"..
👍
I I didn’t even know this show existed until I heard Heather Langenkamp mentioned it in an interview. And the funny thing is I grew up watching growing pains😂.
👍
Yeah, I totally agree. ABC really f***ed up by cancelling Just The Ten Of Us. It was one of the best shows on TV at the time and was really unfair to cancel the show and costing all the actors and crew their jobs because Miller-Boyett Productions wanted the whole TGIF lineup for themselves. When I found out it was cancelled in Summer of 1990, I kept wondering to myself "What the f*** for"? My 13 year old self was pissed. And Going Places? It could have been a better sitcom if it'd quit with always making changes. However, I consider the bombing of that show Karma for what ABC done with Just The Ten Of Us. It still had at least three more good years left.
👍
What ABC should have done was keep just the ten of us as a midseason replacement in case going places failed, which it did.
@@JustinW06 Exactly. They could have done so and pulled it off. That could have definitely worked out really well. No idea, though, why they didn't just keep Just The Ten of Us on the back burner as a midseason replacement instead of just cancelling the show altogether.
And karma for Miller-Boyett too. Their all M-B lineup was unsuccessful
I agree. I was so upset when the show was cancelled
I loved watching this show when I was a teenager. I had already been a fan of Growing Pains and thought Coach Lubbock was very funny. I also had a crush on Heather Langenkamps character. It sucked that Just The Ten of Us was cancelled because it had respectable ratings and was also well writen. And I don't remember Going Places at all. Too bad ABC didn't go by the adage "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" when it came to their TGIF lineup.
And the recent photo of the cast at the end of the video is adorable.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
I do not remember Going Places either. I did not watch ABC in 1990-91 because we were living with my grandmother and all she got were CBS, NBC, and PBS.
I don’t even remember Going Places but I used to love Just The Ten Of Us! I remember Frank Bonner playing the a priest on Just The Ten Of Us who was the head of the school and it was a big departure from his most famous character of Herb Tarlek on WKRP! Step By Step was pretty good too!
I loved Frank Bonner on WKRP!
@@stephensundstrom6379 Sadly, he died last year.
My only problem with Step By Step is the way it went in the last couple of seasons where multiple of the kids were either just gone or barely ever showed up. When shows do that, you can tell it's time to pull the plug. They didn't even give explanations for why they were gone. Just poof.
@@mage1439 Yes, the Chuck Cunningham Syndrome struck again.
He still had some ecentriccities and was still funny in JTTOU
Went to a filming of Just the 10 of us in 1990. It was a cute show.
I bet that was a fun experience! Thanks for sharing that story and for watching my video!
So lucky!
I haven't been through all the comments, but I guess somebody mentioned that the little boy who played J.R. on the show (Matt Shakman) grew up to be a big shot TV director that worked on a few episodes of "Game of Thrones" and every episode of "Wandavision". In one episode called "Puberty Blues" J.R. falls in love with a girl scout played by Jenny Lewis (Rilo Kiley), who became a popular singer. Mathew Perry was also very funny in an episode called "The Dinner Test".
👍
I loved Just the Ten of Us. I wish they would release it on dvd but I read somewhere it has to do with the music rights where the girls sang in so many of the episodes.
That makes sense!
I was so young when this came on. I was 7! I loved this show. Marie (Heather) was my favorite.
👍
Heather Langenkamp brought me to JTTOU, the Lubbocks kept me there❤. There was more story to tell.
Totally agree! Thanks for watching my video!
Found Kirkenbower (spelling, I know 🙄) on UA-cam. He's a grumpy funny man.😂
So true!
Heather Langenkamp was one of my first big crushes as a little boy. She still gets my motor running in a way I can't correctly describe.
👍
Gotta love those Lubbock girls!
👍
It was one of the best eye candy shows ever. ABC gave it a raw deal.
👍
I'd never heard of this show when it was on ABC, but found it on the USA network re-runs and loved it. Disappointed that it got so few episodes.
👍
Ashley, the reruns did better on the USA Network and got higher ratings
Those four girls growing up in my teenage years♥️, show was great!
👍
Never watched Going Places. Funny that they eventually used another family show in the time slot. I miss the more wholesome family shows.
I do as well! TV that I could watch with my kids and not have to worry about content being appropriate for youngsters. Thanks for watching my video!
3 of the Lubbock girls from the TV show just the 10 of us in the late 80s were in the nightmare on elm street movies.
Heather nightmare 1 dream Warriors and new nightmare
Joanne Whitley Freddy's Revenge released 1985
Brooke Thesis nightmare on elm street 4 the Dreammaster 1988

The mom was in the 1984 comedy movie Bachelor party starring Tom Hanks

I was so sad that this show was cancelled. Was my favorite show as a kid. Bad move by ABC as the other shows bombed. They should have brought it back.
👍
The show was a hit or a miss, but when it was funny it was FUNNY! A shame it was cancelled prematurely.
👍
I think one of the best things about the show was the Gavin Doosler character. He was like the Steve Urkel of the show. I think he should have been in more episodes of it.
👍
Never even heard of Going Places but I watched every episode of Just the Ten of Us
👍
Despite earning decent ratings as part of ABC's TGIF block and frequently winning its time slot, Just the Ten of Us was abruptly cancelled in the spring of 1990. It was widely speculated that it was due to Miller-Boyett Productions wanting another one of their shows in the timeslot (to join fellow programs Family Matters, Full House, and Perfect Strangers) thereby dominating the TGIF block; and ABC was simply not able to find another slot for Ten. *However, it was really a case of then ABC Entertainment president Bob Iger simply not liking the show.*
👍
I HATE Bob Iger.
I didn't really care too much what replaced it but I don't remember Going Places. Step by Step was pretty good. But I did like JTTOU a lot because I even thought the mom was cute in addition to the daughters. But I have loved Jamie Luner in anything she's been in since.
Thanks Todd!
I remember Going Places. Heather Locklear, Alan Ruck, and Holland Taylor. Holland was the boss of TV writers who all lived together. It was a candid camera type show.
Oh Deborah Harmon is hot
Jamie hands down oh la la
Elizabeth was the kind of woman I would have wanted as a mother if I didn’t have my own mother (still do). Also, looking at her, it’s not surprising she would have daughters who were babes.
As I recall there was alot of people who had a problem with the sexual comments being made all the time on that show.
I didn't notice it then ...but now I can see there was no reason to throw that in there. It would have been a great show without all the sexual comments made by the girls and about the girls.
So that's why I thought it was cancelled.
I never even heard of the show "Going Places"
But now I'm going to see if I can find it on UA-cam.
1min later...
FOUND IT!!
👍
Did not know but they had three arguments against cancellation. A good lead in to 20/20 and the carryover from Growing Pains being two if them
@@jwgreek8606they should have kept the show as a midseason replacement.
From the time i've read about this official reason of how this sitcom was cancelled.that's the lamest reason i ever read or heard of terminating a tv series.
Agreed!
@@stephensundstrom6379 Ditto for me and show isn't on DVD all these years later!
That's ABC for you, always making dumb decisions smh.
The theme song was awesome! I loved all the '80s TV theme songs.
I totally agree!
That Friday night 8:30 Central slot was like a revolving door. One show after another, and with each premiere, you wondered if it was going to stick. I eventually considered the slot cursed. I also thought 20/20 was a very odd choice to air after four sitcoms in a row. I guess the thinking was that the kids watching had gone to bed? Hell no, it was Friday night, we stayed up late!
I know I was always up late on Friday nights. Thanks for watching my video!
Going Where? Never heard of it. But at least they can’t blame JtToU for it not working out. Step by Step was okay too but i watched Just the Ten of Us more.
👍
Brooke Theiss was in ANOES 4. The last good one of the series, except for Wes Craven’s New Nightmare bc Heather Langenkamp was in that one, too. Just the 10 of Us was one of my favorite shows when I was a kid, along with Rags to Riches.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and for watching my video! My favorites from the ANOES series were 1, 3, 4, and the New Nightmare film. Obviously the first film was the best though.
Watching the promo for "Going Places," I still have no idea what it is or why I would watch it.
I could tell Gary Owens did the voice-over for it but it escapes me otherwise.

I’ve actually boycotted ABC since they cancelled it. To this day, I don’t watch ABC.
That’s impressive!
@@stephensundstrom6379 haha, I was 11 years old and that was my favorite show ever. I was so pissed when they cancelled it. I was like “well, there’s NBC!” And I’ve watched nbc, cbs and fox ever since.

Just The 10 of us was a fun show!!! Going Places was not good from the get go!!! Thanks for sharing this fun video!!! 👍👍

And that bumper that ABC showed for Going Places made me wonder if that would truly make anybody want to watch it. That was so bad.
Loved Jt10oU! I remember Bill Kirchenbauer from his Stand-Up days! & one of my favorite Trivia ???s... Miss Willette plays the young artist in the Outfield Video, 'Your Love'!
Don't remember the Replacement Series at all! But by my calculations it was right around 1st Gulf, & I was probably GLUED to CNN!
Ahhh….The Outfield! One of my favorite bands of all time. Both of the band members have passed away unfortunately 🙁. Thanks for sharing that additional info about Ms Willette. I didn’t know she was in that video.
I always liked Bill Kirchenbauer as a standup comedian, and liked him on GP. JTTOU was great. I really wish he had gotten the recognition for his talent. But, as so many good shows before and after, JTTOU was relegated to the dustbin of TV history. Great work on your videos, Stephen. I'm FB friends with Bill. He and his wife now live overseas as expats and he seems to really be enjoying retirement.
That’s awesome! I saw a video interview he did with someone recently and mentioned that he was going to be moving out of the country. I’m glad to hear he’s doing well!
@@stephensundstrom6379 He lives in Thailand and I'm FB friends with him too. He isn't retired. He still does things, he just does them from there.
There is an episode where Coach is doing a stand up routine, and I read later that Bill was improvising on the spot, and when they showed the people laughing in the audience, it was the actors’ genuine reaction to Bill’s jokes.
@@whalers59 The episode Comedy Tonight, where Coach is doing stand up, is Bill's own stand up routine. That's probably why he got a writing credit on this episode.
@@sha11235 That’s very interesting! 👍
ABC has not gotten it's act together. They cancelled Big Sky as well as Alaska Daily and keep running Grey's Anatomy and The Goldberg's into the dirt
Well, at least they finally canceled The Goldbergs, although about 5 years too late!
Yes and what's more they did not get a proper finale and they deserved one
In 1988 I became a huge fan of Nightmare on Elm Street and had a crush on Heather Langenkamp. I saw Nightmare on Elm Street 4 that summer which Brooke Theis was in and the year ended with them both being on Just The Ten of Us 😂
A good year indeed!
Remember the little boy on the show would wear "Freddy" T-Shirts from the Nightmare films.
I loved the show as a child!!
I can't believe this is what happened to the show 😖

What a great show. ABC is always making dumb decisions. Like when they canceled All My Children and One LifeTo Live
They've definitely made some questionable moves over the years. Thanks for watching my video!
What is more they ran both The Goldberg's and Grey's Anatomy Into the dirt and they passed on the LA Law reboot and cancelled Alaska Daily and Big Sky
ABC has still not gotten their act together. They cancelled Alaska Daily and passed on an LA Law reboot
True story!
ABC has passed on a lot of show that went on to be a hit heck they passed on the Cosby Show which Bill Cosby pitch for ABC back in the 80s, but it turned it down
@@RealDaveTalk they still do it
I think they should move it to another network maybe CBS or NBC or even Fox. ABC made a big mistake of canceling the show. We could’ve gotten like six more seasons and imagine if the girls growing up and one of the babies will be aged up just like most TV sitcoms

I don't recall this show as fondly. Coach Lubbock was funny, and so was Cindy, but not so much Connie while Marie was a gratuitous stereotype.
Wendy was too conniving, but she certainly advanced the plot.
Also, I find it strange that this show was replaced by something more 'adult', considering this show had the most adult content on TGIF, with these 4 girls being so boy-crazy!
Great point!
I didn't think it was a particularly good show but imo it was very wholesome. Yeah the four girls were boy crazy but they were teenagers so what do you expect?
@@kiranolan7104 Their dating fiascos were well beyond wholesome.
@JLvatron Maybe I'm remembering wrong. It's been a very long time since I watched a lot of the show. Its just most of the shows back then were wholesome so it was hard to believe.
@@kiranolan7104 Compared to today's filth on tv, it was wholesome. But during the 80's TGIF, it was the least wholesome of the shows.

Never even knew about Going Places!! what a silly idea.

According to an article in the LA Times; Mike Sullivan was told by Bob Iger, supposedly in confidence, that the show wasn't cancelled out of deference to Miller-Boyett. The show was cancelled simply because the executives didn't like it. That's it.
From what I understand, both Tom Murphy and Dan Burke, CapCities head honchos, were pretty staunch Catholics, and were not happy with the way the show was portraying Catholicism (never mind Mike Sullivan is a devout Catholic himself). That's just hearsay, though. And when you add the fact that the critics were, well, critical of the show (and unfairly critical, I might add); they were probably thinking that they could get away with it.
It probably didn't help that the show wasn't a smash hit, either; though that was sort of the network's doing, also. The show hovered around #40 for its two full seasons; that might seem like mediocre ratings, until you realize the show was on at 9:30 on Fridays. Shows that air in that timeslot are lucky to finish in the top-50, let alone top-40. They tried to let the Friday Night Death Slot kill it, but it wouldn't die. So the network did the deed themselves.
Wow…great additional insight! Thanks!
@@RealDaveTalk Care to elaborate?
Loved this show. It was heartwarming family focused and funny. I still watch reruns on UA-cam today. Big mistake cancelling the show!
Well said! Thanks for watching my video!
I didn’t even remember the name of the show that replaced JtToU, until recently. I only remember watching TGIF and something else was on, disappointed I turned it off and was Going Places…someplace else. If internet was around those days I would have known ABC wanted Miller/Boyett shows to fill all Friday nights. I still can’t believe there was NO worse show on ABC to drop…reruns on USA had better ratings. Doesn’t NBC run USA Network, think they would have picked up series for their network if ABC was too stupid. Was almost gonna watch reruns of Fuller House until I realized it was still a Miller/ Boyett production…and said 👎

An old chestnut of dumb moves by ABC. They had a hit with Burke's Law (the very first hit for Aaron Spelling) a cop show with several major stars per episode . Some genius at ABC ruined it. In the third season Burke went from cop to secret agent. The show was canceled after thirteen weeks.

Stephen Sundstrom, before watching your video, I thought ABC cancelled it because the cast was large. Yes, it was a dumb move by ABC. At least they admitted it a year later. Too bad they didn't think of just returning it midseason since they had to know some new shows wouldn't make it, but I guess the policy regarding that is they don't do that with current shows, just new ones. Did I watch Going Places? Yes, and wasn't really amused by much, although I liked the theme song and when they had to get to work they'd chant, "Work to do, got work to do," over and over. By the way Step by Step was just an updated Brady Bunch that basically sucked as well.

ABC has been canceling my favorite shows for a long time now. I still haven't forgiven them for canceling My So-Called life.
That was a really good show!
My sentiments exactly. Add Just the Ten of Us to this list:
Whiskey Cavalier
Grand Hotel
Gong Show (2017)
Stumptown
The list goes on, but as for Jt10ou, it could’ve been paired with Growing Pains.
I had no idea that abc was This notorious for canceling these shows too quickly.
I did watch Going Places, because I am obsessed with all things Hallie Todd…lol. It was definitely not worth watching. The network really did do Just The Ten of Us dirty with how this all went down.
👍
Yes, I loved this show❤❤❤they made a huge mistake canceling the show
Agreed!
Going places sucks, but just the 10 of us was awesome
