Who among us hasn't had to put the fix on the miracle of Chevy shift kludge, They are famous for that it used to be taught in jr. high here in the states. get the lever in neutral, the align the linkage on the column, then wait for it to happen again. That's how Fenton linkage came to be. nobody had money for the good stuff ( HURST)

I wasn't there as I only saw the cave drawings of the incident.
According to ancient lore (and the drawings) it seems as though the damage to the front fender occurred when an innocent Triceratops was grazing along a footpath when suddenly, a rogue dinosaur rancher from a neighboring and rival farm decided to attempt to wrangle the competition's herd onto his ranch.
The truck crested over a hill (more of a grassy knoll) and struck the Triceratops, breaking off one of it's horns (the Triceratops, not the truck) and scraped the remains 2 horns along the upper side portion of the fender.
Hence the offending damage to that area of the offender's fender.
On a serious note.... GREAT video on getting the fender roughed in so you're not fighting it when the modifications start.
Thanks for keeping us up to date on the progress.

Delving into the fascinating world of headlight bucket retention hardware, there is a plethora of options one can choose from. I have three classic vehicles and they showcase three of the more regular options one finds.....well, here in New Zealand at least.
The 1979 Triumph 2500S has her original factory fitment - Philips head (aka crass-head) sheet metal screws. The 2500S has never been restored and still runs her standard sealed beam headlamps, so either someone was very careful and never dropped one into the abyss or they have never been removed.
The 1977 Mini has its buckets pop-rivetted in place. This would have been when the refurbishment of its body was last performed - approx 10 years ago - by the owner two back before I got it. The reason I am able to ascertain such an exact time frame is that the sun-visors, the rear view mirror and several other smallish accoutrements have also been fastened to the bodywork with rivets rather than screws. Its grille, however, is held on by such a range of wood screws, ranging from 3-inch countersunk pozi-drive to one-inch dome-headed standard slot, that I guess they used the screws from everywhere else to hold the grille on.
The 1974 Triumph Stag I own was refreshed by a neanderthalic speciman that survived in the hills of the South Island since the last ice age, but who was mistaken for a Beatnik in the late 70s and employed by a local body shop. When the Stag came in for a refresh in the mid-1980s, they gainfully lost every gasket, grommet and seal that they could and then for the piece de resistance, swept the floor of the shop and used whatever screws they found to fit the headlights, grille sections and such. They did take care to ensure that no two screws were the same size, type, thread, drive or head.....and for the 34 screws that make up the headlight and grille panel in the front of the car, that is quite an impressive effort on their part, I feel. There should be an award for that and should I find out who did it, I am certain I can find a suitable piece of lead with which to crown them to show my appreciation.
I have been enjoying this series and have learned a fair bit watching you work and listening to the reasons behind what to look for in a panel and why. I then go down to my project Mini (another 1977 beasty) and stare at it for a while before picking up my hammer and dolly and belting another panel back into shape with renewed vigour. It is always interesting to find what is hidden under filler.....and sometimes one wishes one had never picked up the grinder.....but we're here now and that's just the way it is. To say my Mini project is above my skillset is an understatement, but listening to you and others in the trade (or who have been in it for years and retired), learning by having a go is the only way to see whether I can put the tips and tricks to any good effective use....and so far it's fairly promising and better than it was a year or two ago. Besides which - and if nothing else - watching you is inspiring me to work on the thing! So thankyou, my friend. All the best.

Front fenders are 54 and early 55 . They are recessed for the park lights which only came like that those years . I had a 54 that had to have that fender replaced in about 1975 and you would think a lot of fenders like that would be around at that time . Well the body shop found an older one with out that recessed area , so he just cut a hole behind the park light for it to stick back in to . Well it could not be seen from the out side but when I found it later I always told others to not go to the lazy sneaky guy but to find somebody else . A couple of years or less he left town do to not enough work I found out shortly after that , made me smile .😊.

I had a 60 Ford stepside van (milk truck) that used to jam on the 1-2 shift. Which of course always happened in the middle of an intersection after accellerating from a green light. The only fix was to pull over, shut it down and wrestle with the linkage to unjam it. The previous owner had conveniently cut an access hole in the floorboards with a torch. It never occurred to me to fix it - I just didn't have that kind of know-how at age 17 lol.

Fortunately, cars have come a long way since then. No more pesky shift linkage to jam up, no need to carry tools under the seat...just call a tow truck and have it hauled to the nearest dealership, where they will simply remove and replace your 32-speed transmission that is conveniently no longer under warranty.

I guess I’m just lucky. I’ve had to do a 3-speed, a 4-speed, and a 4L60E automatic (twice) on the side of the road. The 4L60E the trans end of the cable bushing disintegrated and came off the ball of the shift lever. A pair of vice grips held it in place til I could get parts. The other time the cable folded and kinked so put shifter where I needed it, D, then roll under truck and move lever till the truck lurched forward😮. But this was in a parking lot.

I learned to drive in a 1953 Chevy sedan when I was 13. You probably shouldn't do that anymore. The column standard shift linkage periodically jammed. It was easy enough to fix. You just had to pop the hood and pull up on one linkage levers. I have no urge to remove dents from cars myself, but I like to watch you do it.

Ok, not a three speed story but my brother and I jammed a v8 into an old 65 Chevy pickup when we were teenagers.
It was a three on the tree but we converted it to automatic with a chunk of threaded rod through the floor to use as a shifter.
I was driving one day and my dog jumped on my arm thereby jamming the truck into park at about 40 miles per hour.
The engine torqued so much that it broke the distributor cap.
    Five mile walk home.
Replaced the cap and amazingly the transmission worked perfectly fine.
It was an old two speed slush bucket.

That's okay, this was a fantastic tutorial, even if there was no fire! The store was called Try Sara's Top's, but there were too many S's so they dropped one when naming the creature. At one point she even had a sweater line made from real Trysaratops fur, It's very luxurious and resembles Cashmere in many ways.

Yes I have had the rare and enviable thrill of lying on my back in snow to overcome one of Ford's better ideas. I lucked out and managed to buy a used Econoline van from Honest Abraham's Dicey Emporium. One day it decided it only needed one front motor mount, it also got lazy and leaned onto the engine bay. Managed to get it into second, and after frequent exposure to the delicious aroma of burning clutch I got home. Yet another occasion, I found myself also flat on my back in mud and water, attempting to hand shift a fire truck's transfer case, thus it is hard to teach me any knew cuse words, but I am continuing my education to learn new and more definitive combinations. Sadly the latest generation lack such skills as they rely heavily on the "f" word. Oh yeah, just about forgot (geezer moment), great work on that tortured fender and explaining for us amateurs the measuring nine ways for Sunday to get stuff to line up.

As I dug through the pile while loading it onto the second trailer, I was amazed that all the parts seemed to be there. None of the metal was bare but the disassembling had not gone smoothly. Lots of damage due to rusted fasteners that had refused to come apart. Let's just say, a torch was involved😢 Thanks for the videos!:)

PayPal is probably waiting for you to start mowing down the fenders to verify your identity. I’m excited to see you fabricate the upside-down riding mower for the trim job. Don’t forget to sharpen the blade so you get nice clean cuts. 😊

Yes , by all means. I have had to unstuck shift linkage many times . I've done it on Chevys and Fords . After a couple of years you learn how to shift w/o hanging the linkage up.

O yes I have a 1956 Nash Metropolitan with the original 3speed on the column, the shift forks on the column are warn badly and if you get rammy with it you will be walking, if you are careful and when you come out of first gear to the neutral position push the shift lever down then up to second it’s fine! I am installing a Toyota 5 speed soon, it’s on my list!

My first vehical was a 1947 Jeep with a 3 on the tree . It was used to haul the mail the shifter was wornout . I got a top for the trans and made it a floor shifter. I allso owned a 1967 and 1969 c10 chevys with 3 speeds . One of them i put a car 4 speed in and had a 4 on the tree. I didnt under stand but they would mess up just out of the blue. I now have a 1982 chevy 4x4 K10 that was a 3 on the tree but now has a floor shifter. Why any one would have bought this K10 after a test drive is beyond me?

As a European very few of us have experienced anything related to three speed unless it’s extremely old - most cars were manual until recently (recently like 20 years ago) and were 4-speed. Now we have a lot of automatic transmissions with a minimum of 6 gears…

I once had a shift tube break while going into 2nd gear. I didn't untangle it though. I just drove in 2nd till I got a replacement tube. Cheers! 😎🛻🐔🏁🏁

Have I ever had to untangle a 3 speed linkage alongside the road? Actually hundreds of times. I owned a 64 Rambler Classic. That three on the tree had more wobble in it than my Grandmother’s knees!

I had a similar issue with PayPal. I had to "re-verify" my verified 15 year old account. By chance I noticed a message on my account that said "I had a few days left" to re-verify my account or would no longer be able to accept funds. No reason was given as to why this was necessary.

Yep, pull off the road and grab the wrench I keep under the seat for "untangling". I finally cleaned everything up well, applied lots of grease, then baling wire. It's been years now.

Very informative video !! Thank you ! A couple of things you didn't mention when you were working on that long upper crease that are not commonly mentioned by those doing and showing these repairs.
1- How hard you need to be pushing on the dolly from behind the crease when you are doing your "off dolly" work trying to get the crease to move back out.
2- When you have the dolly behind the damage, how to determine exactly where to place the dolly and exactly where to hit/slap the metal either "on" or "off" the dolly. I have found that "tipping" the dolly and "tapping" the metal with the hammer helps you to locate the dolly exactly based upon the "on dolly ring" that tells you (from the front side) that you are right "on" the edge of the dolly.
From my limited (compared to you) experience, I think you would agree that getting good at doing this is "mostly" about more practice/experience until you get "comfortable and relaxed" about what/how you are doing the work. The other thing that is SOOOOOO important is trying to communicate to the beginner/amateur (that would be ME) "understands" the techniques and how to recognize them and their results. 👍👍👍👍🤷‍♀🤷‍♂🤷🤓🤠😜✌✌

Young guys driving old, worn cars at some point became members of the greasy finger club. That's when the shift linkage hung up between low and second gear.

Bought a new Chevy short bed pickup in 1979 . They go for stupid money today. Anyway it was the wives vehicle. She always drove sticks till her mid 70's when her knees began to bother her. Kept it for 13 years. The last 3 years we had it, it was always getting stuck between gears. She would jump out , pop the hood, reach over the fender, line the linkage up, off she would go, and never once complained about it.

I had a 67 chevy with a 3 on the tree. About 3 or 4 different times I had to fix the linkage on the side of the road and another time the pin broke off the shifter handle. Never a dull moment with that truck.

  • @jgossy5478

Kyle, yes I have untangled shift rods on a dozen a Chevy GMC and most three on the tree vehicles, my chevy was about the same year truck as the chev you have..
Usually the truck gets stuck in low when you shift to second, if you are on a level surface you are golden, on a grade the gears want to twist, making it hard to pull up the linkage, the clutch should pushed in to take the pressure off the gear.
You can rock the truck back and forth while pulling up on the stuck rod on a non running vehicle if its on a level surface like a garage floor out in th wild you found a simi level spot, shut off the truck then pull the rods to the mid spot/ middle.

Lol yeah, I had to "get out and get under" my 69 Suburban, at the front gate of a Navy base during rush hour! It was converted from 3 on the tree to a floor shifter, and would get stuck between gears. No fun!
