That's why I love her older movies so much because when I'm watching her fight scenes I know that it is truly her 😁😁
It is not done in one take. She did some parts and stuntmen did others and they cut it together. The shot where the motorcycle comes from left of screen and actually lands onto the moving train is a stuntman. The shot with her on the bike on the train is done with wires.
"If there's a really cool action scene, or even just a stunt that you want us to take a look at, we will bring a professional on the show and we will have them break it down for you in front of a man who has never seen that movie before."
Jackie Chan & Michelle Yeoh got into a stunt competition during the making of Police Story 3: Supercop. Which kept escalating, leading to her motorcycle jump and him hanging onto a helicopter's rope ladder.
I'm so glad they reacted to sword fight in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, which is absolutely phenomenal. I wish they also talked about Zhang Zi Yi (unlike Michelle Yoeh, this was her first time doing martial arts) and did a bit more research into the BTS. Ang Li wanted his actors to be convincing as martial artists so they went under rigorous training. They were actually trained by another actor in the movie who is a martial arts instructor in real life. Also, this is a "wuxia" (martial heroes) film, which is actually a fantasy genre. These heroes possess supernatural fighting abilities, which is why the characters in this film can float.
I actually kinda like that Clint hasn't seen a good chunk of the movies the scenes in these videos are from because that way we get a genuine first time reaction from him. Also he's wearing that Hyper Light Drifter shirt, which immediately makes everything better.
Mad respect for stunt women. Never even thought of the less clothing, less padding issue. Would love to see more videos with stunt people reacting and explaining movie stunts. This is awesome!
That's why movie ladies always drive me crazy. Real life women are protected just like guys but once they are in a movie actual protection goes out the window.
Bring her back again, she is seriously badass and has a great personality. Idk why I never thought about how stunt women usually can't wear pads because of the outfits, thats insane.
@@williameldridge9382 Take your point on padding. But I had a friend in a motorbike accident who had terrible scarring on exposed skin being dragged across tarmac. Was thinking any stuntperson who has to show skin might go through that and it's not a nice thought.
6:30 I love that Amy recognises the stylistic quality of that 'floaty wirework' quality to HK and Chinese martial arts choreography. It's one of the reasons I love wuxia (lit. martial hero) cinema genre so much (Bride with White Hair, Hero, CT; HD, Reign of Assassins). I've read in places that it's an exaggerated version of qinggong (Gentle/weightless skill). I understand why people don't like it, but it's ultimately a stylistic convention.
I can appreciate the style even though I don't particularly enjoy it. All movies break from reality in lots of ways, but the floaty wirework stuff breaks it a bit too much/too far for me.
I’m more or less the opposite of what Clint said-I like the floaty wirework when it’s full on fantasy like Crouching Tiger, as opposed to when it intrudes on realism like in Ip Man
@@asherandai1000 I understand where you going but what about flying and stuff like that I feel that that breaks from reality a bit too much. I can imagine walking on a planet with weaker gravity would appear floaty but not too downright unrealistic and its in the name of the technic too , lightness skill, they're supposed to be floating like a feather.
Ang Lee stated that he wanted Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon to have a very dream like, fairy tail feel to it so her interpretation is pretty much exactly what he was aiming for.
I like it well enough where it's _supposed_ to be fantastical. Even then, it has to be done really well to sell it to the audience. In 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon', for me there were too many shots where, rather than the performers appearing just to be incredibly light on their feet, it really did look like they were being swung around on wires and reaching out to try and get contact between their feet and the surfaces that they were supposed to be springing from. Where I definitely _don't_ like wire work is where the action is supposed to be realistic, but it's obvious the performers are on wires because they can't achieve the moves through athleticism alone.
While you didn’t notice it before, now you know! Glad your perspective has widened. Noticing these little things is how we understand how people are truly treated differently. Wait till you start to notice how men film women differently! Compare how Wonder Woman is shot in Wonder Woman vs Justice League. Mad Max Fury Road is a great example of a film that photographs the women just like everyone else and not for the male gaze.
@@Megancunnington To be fair, it's not like women haven't ever had movies with "Female gaze" material... *que shirtless Matthew McConaughey scene*. I know it can go overboard at times, but including eye-pleasing stuff for male and/or female viewers isn't a bad thing.
Michelle Yeoh is the only person that scared Jackie Chan. She was doing incredibly dangerous stunts and Jackie Chan felt that he had to do even more dangerous ones. Finally Jackie told Michelle that if she continued like that Jackie would literally die trying to top her.
Brie Larson: ''I'm doing my own stunts.'' (yeah, not really, she had 4,in words, FOUR,stuntwomen standing in for her flat arse.) Michelle Yeoh: ''Bitch please...''
Yeah Michelle Yeoh is boss, I really liked her in the new Star Trek even though her acting is iffy sometimes (maybe she's just directed bad, who knows) still love her though!

@@sof_t_ Not really, while stuntmen kind of get screwed, the actor has full say on what they are wearing in the film, this goes doubly so for actresses. No director or show-runner wants to put a woman in a position they are uncomfortable in.

Movie: Hardcore Henry. Scene: highway chase. Reason: the main character fires a machine gun from the sidecar of a motorbike, then drives that bike through a van full of guys, then jumps onto a helicopter. In first-person.

The scene from pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the black Pearl where Jack turns into a Skeleton and fights babossa, please it is my all time favorite CGI fights scene cause the CGI really holds up.
That came out in a time when they had actual extras on the DVDs. There are at least 2 hours worth of BTS stuff, including a large bit about all the skeleton scenes and that fight in particular. They even break down the different fighting styles of the actors.
"Intention and purpose" the best fight choreography explanation ever! Best stunt video ever just because she is so awesome. More videos with stunt women, they really are the best!
Amy had some great input on this one and honestly I'd love to hear more about what kind of protection they've developed for the performers. Clear tape pads and stuff, trying to do practically any of her choreography in skintight pants and a corset has to be a nightmare. Remembering back to Gui talking about how he is notorious for splitting pants and he gets to wear cargo where female stunt performers are often in practically spray on latex. I don't know what you might think of this but perhaps reach out to Olivia Jackson for some much needed transparency for the industry. Her career was cut short in a bad negligent accident in South Africa where another crew member was also killed, says 16 other stunt people were hurt making the Res Evil series. I think maybe we should shed some light on Hollywood filming overseas possibly to cut corners on cost and safety. It's a bit somber for a series that's supposed to be so fun and awe inspiring but I think these people deserve to be recognized and their safety prioritized over our entertainment.
yeah this video is genuinely horrifying, no wonder people die all the time filming that trash when they refuse to do two seperate shots for stuff like the rolling car shot in winter soldier
I hate all the high heels in film. But I think my breaking point was when the Amazons in Wonder Woman had them, and the princess in Aquaman wore them (as did his mum who had been living in the wild for 30 years). They just look silly, and make the jobs of the women who have to wear them harder.
@@Lurklen To me. It actually makes sense for Amazons to be able to do the things they do in High Heels which are incredibly dangerous if used as a weapon, but yeah I agree for the most part on regular humans trying to do crazy stuff in 'em. Trinity is another case where I'm totally fine with it. Same with Black Widow, and Atomic Blond... wait. I think the real problem is Choreography and Storytelling. When your action sucks and the lady is on high heels. Those high heels will stick out and if she's wearing high heels cuz lady wears high heels than that makes it doubly worse because than she has no character. Black Widow is supposed to be extremely feminine, but deadly. Those heels accentuate her appearance, but she's an Avenger for a reason. Those heels aren't a hinderance. The're another weapon in the inventory.
@slow poke Oh, I get that. I'm talking about it being a bit more realistic. It isnt that realistic for a 140 pound lady to tank a blow from a guy who's 180 pounds. But adding those minor visuals would definitely help sell it. Not only that, but me personally I like this type of realism and character design.
".. usually women don't get to wear much pads, because we're not wearing much clothing." Whoa. That never really occurred to me before. Props to all the stuntwomen out there!!
It was really cool hearing about stunts from a female point of view, and I love that you gave Michelle Yeoh her props! Hope you're on the show again. I'd like to hear more about the specific things that make it different or more difficult for a female performer - maybe a word or two on how they usually have to fight with long loose hair?
I've never really thought about how stunt women in movies can't wear the same amount of pads as a stunt man can considering they have to dress like the character they're replacing.
@Daanyaal urram those characters are usually invented by and for the male gaze. In short, no woman would want to go into battle with a skimpy outfit. it's men imagining them like that.

@@umainebearman Why is it so ridiculous? You could totally imagine that the fight choreographer could direct all the moves and if a stuntman doesn't know how to do they have to learn. I believe Jackie Chan is much more in a leading role than a collaborative one, but I might be wrong.

Me looking at the highway door scene: „they could never have done any of that for real.“ Her: „oh yeah we did that with a truck pushing us and we even had a ramp.“ Me: 😳
I wonder if they had wheels under it so it would slide better. If the metal directly touches the ground it should be stopping very fast. @CatandBonez she did wear pads in that scene. She even explained it
I feel like I automatically assume everything is CGI or somehow faked nowadays, but when she said it was real I just... now I have to question everything again, fml
That sword fight in Crouching Tiger is still insane 20+ years later. The choreography is second to none and whilst the floaty wire work in the film is part of the Wuxia genre they really tone it down during that fight. The wide shots are clearly stunt doubles but the shots where it's clearly the actresses show how incredible it looks when the actors do as much of the fights as possible. Whenever I watch Crouching Tiger I'm waiting for that fight. Just incredible.
The "floaty wirework" that Amy was talking about is a common thing in the Chinese wuxia genre called qinggong! In the real world, qinggong is a martial arts technique similar to parkour. In wuxia fiction however, qinggong is extremely exaggerated and allows practitioners to make their body as light as a feather. This results in all sorts of ridiculous stunts like being able to glide on water, run faster, jump higher and farther, stand on thin branches etc.
it's fantasy. A lot Hollywood stunts are also exaggarated, especially when they are shot several times or fly off several meters from a car crash and stand up like it's no big deal-
Exactly, when I see people complain about it being unrealistic, it's like complaining about dragons being in a fantasy movie because dragons don't exist in real life, it's part of the genre.

Gov Ann Richards from Texas was famous for saying that quote at the democratic national convention when George Bush Sr was President. I would honestly love to see a guest who's more on the production side. Like what do they do with the stuff they break? Tons of junk cars and props etc. that need to be rid of. How do they decide when to rent a freeway and when to build a road like they did with Matrix. When to outsource stuff to another VFX studios and whatnot? Just stuff that happens behind the scenes that viewers have no clue about.
In recent years production companies and studios have gotten better in keeping stuff even some of the stuff they break, I visited a Bond exhibition in London they had the Casino Royale 'most rolls' Aston Martin there, in all its beat to shit glory. There is a video on UA-cam of someone finding the first General Lee from the Dukes of Hazard and restoring it... The condition it was in was dire. The prep that goes into crashing vehicles pretty much makes them not worth salvaging, if the car has to jump then you might ballance it out by putting concrete in the trunk, if its rolling or smashed, all fluids, gas anything hazardous gets removed, if it needs to break in a certain way you'll make cuts to the internal structure and frame. So most trashed cars probably get cubed, even exotics. Sets still get broken up. A lot of sets still get the axe and skip treatment, unless it is going to be reused in a franchise or something. Sets are too dificult to store. With freeways, city streets and other locations it comes down to time, cost, damage, security and saftey. Permits for filming can be hellishly expensive, with a highway you might need to replace K rails or divides, light poles and your working to a clock so all the broken glass, parts and wrecked vehicles have to be cleared to open the road at a certain time, so if your crash involves trucks or rigs you might want to build a freeway. Again back to the wrecked vehicles if your car is getting dumped into a river or canal you have to make sure all fluids, including the battery are removed before it goes in or you will be facing heavy fines for polution. Also you will need cranes and flatbeds if your wrecking cars so you have to factor that into the budget. These days it can just be easier to CG in a bunch of cars, or do the whole sequence in a computer. Which brings us to out sourcing, which is all down to time and budget. With props there are lots of auctions where you can buy production destroyed props, they recently had a John Wick auction and that had a lot of damaged knives and rubber guns.
I always make a note to learn the names of the stunt actors, without whom, we wouldn't have such amazing action sequences. Amy Johnston is no exception! Such a down to earth badass!!!

Yeah, it's terrifying to think they might be more badly injured when things go wrong
Honestly, pads simply remove pain. Anything that is going to seriously injure them, will do it, pads or no pads. That said, women are bad ass.
@@williameldridge9382 you're not a stunt man so go on and STFU

I feel like an idiot that never thought how stunt women cant wear much due to skimpy outfits the characters wear
@@zacmartin7349 because it wasn't something that was considered before, even if it was blatantly obvious.
While you didn’t notice it before, now you know! Glad your perspective has widened. Noticing these little things is how we understand how people are truly treated differently.
Olivia's story is so tragic. The studio paid her bare minimum for her career ending injury, disgusting.
I wish all the best for her.
yeah this video is genuinely horrifying, no wonder people die all the time filming that trash when they refuse to do two seperate shots for stuff like the rolling car shot in winter soldier

Dude, this would be my dream guest for sure!!
Please get Jackie Chan...no deepfakes ;p
