Hopefully this helps, “prog” doesn’t really represent a specific sound but how a song is structured and written. Dream Theater and Periphery sound nothing alike but they are both prog. Longer songs, technical instrumentals, odd time signatures at times, lots of transitions and dynamics. That’s what prog is to me at least.
I feel like the term prog has become a catch all for any band a bit out of the norm...I mean Rush, Jethro Tull, Queensryche, Tool, Dream Theater, Frank Zappa, Yes, Periphery, Polyphia, Opeth are all considered pretty much prog staples, and I suppose that's correct, but in my head, I don't consider Rush and Queensryche in the same genre as Tool and Dream Theater or Yes as compared to Periphery. I'm probably overthinking it....
For some context, a lot of progressive metal derives chord progressions from jazz. This is why the melodies can sound disjointed or random, but they are still coherent. It's also why adding a random jazz solo towards the end isn't such a strange idea, as all that's really changing is the instrumentation. Prog can be a wierd one to get into because of this strange blend of styles, but most fans of the genre listen to it for exactly that aspect. Either way, periphery is a great place to go if you're trying to slowly immerse yourself in the genre. They have a lot of heavier, less experimental songs such as "Blood Eagle", "Motormouth" and "Xyglrox" which might appeal to your apparent preferance for more straight-forward, heavy style metal songs!
Yo man! That jazzy section is a callback to one of their older albums, a song called “The Event” - the chorus section in this song also has exactly the same chord progression(s)/rhythm. I really wanna know what they’re doing with this album now, as the album(s) it’s referencing released in 2015 and was a double album release, concept album… My interest in piqued lmfao! Loving your reaction dude! ✨
I think the chorus is so sick because of the unexpected dissonant harmony when spencer sings 'Heartbeat Haunts me' it made the chorus sound fresh and new and not boring also the video clip is shorter than the actual song there's someting after the ending djent part
Jorgen Munkeby is the one who played the sax solo, he also worked with Misha and Mark on Nocturnal Hours Can't wait for the rest of the album, this and Zagreus are bangers
Id consider Periphery to be accessible prog, but in a good way. They absolutely could do 10 minutes of technical shit that no one could follow, but its instead sprinkled into an overall digestible experience that most metalheads can headbang to
Periphery have always been on the heavier and wackier side of Prog, so much so that they sometimes blur the line between prog and djent. Some other songs from prog bands I'd recommend that you may like: Sikth: Walking Shadows, Philistine Philosophies, and Cracks of Light. Veil of Maya: Pool Spray, Outsider, and Synthwave Vegan.
I fucking love this band! Spencer has some of the best vocals in the business. Their Juggernaut Alpha and Omega albums are still to this day some of my favorite music of all time.
Misha (the dude who played the solo) has always said in interviews that he likes being labeled as prog because it lets them do whatever they want and it still fall under the umbrella of "prog". Because prog to most people IS the mixture of many things. Oh and Misha is extremely into Meshuggah (as are most of us), and I'd definitely agree that it has Meshuggah vibes in a good way lol.
Misha (one of the guitarists/one of the main song writers) always teases how they "rip off" Meshuggah and being his favorite band i dont think it would offed him or any fan as when you hear something that sounds shuggah-y you know they did it intentionally. Theres not a doubt in my mind Misha wanted to go FULL Thordendal on that solo, great reaction nonetheless as always!! And to me prog is just being experimental and having some jazzy chords or chord changes along with polymeters in the rhythm, the genre bending helps too as progessive is pretty much just doing whatever you want
If you want better cleans you gotta check out reptile. Also I know virtually nothing about periphery but older songs like Zylgrox fucking slap with all of the electronic elements.
Self-titled is still my favorite album from this band. Racecar, Jetpacks, and Light. Those 3 tracks... they still haven't been able to top them despite never releasing a single bad album. That's not a bad thing either. Sometimes you just get the highest possible score on your first try. Fucking insane vocals on this album, the main reason I like this band is the vocalist. Screams but very emotional and genuine cleans(a rare combo imo)
@@XavierMacX True. Forgot about both of the Juggernaut albums. Don't know if Clear EP and Icarus Lives EP count, but they also don't follow their typical naming conventions
@@Nathan-dn4zl Yeah not sure about those shorter ones. I was also referring to Select Difficulty in addition to Juggernaut; while maybe not considered on the same level by most (I personally think Select Difficulty has gotten better over time and is extremely underrated), it's pretty long/dense. Cheers!
I love how there are no parameters in which prog can exist in. Not giving a fuck where the song goes next, yet still it works. And as far as the album title, I wouldn't think too hard on it lol. Periphery are cheeky like that.
The best way I can describe prog, at an extremely high level, is that if you can’t lump it in with another metal subgenre, it’s probably prog. Djent is a guitar technique that just so happens to be used in a lot of prog metal, although people have been debating whether or not it’s its own genre for the past decade plus.
Misha talks about straight up ripping off Meshuggah all the time. It’s a bit of a meme at this point. As one should because Meshuggah is amazing and a lot of modern metal would not exist without them.
I feel so validated that someone else is questioning what progressive means when hearing this song. I kind of thought "progressive" in progressive rock/metal was used like how it is with "progressive" trance--where there's progressively adding in and out layers of sound--i.e. long builds and breakdowns--which made sense because my exposure to prog was like Tool, etc... But prog is actually being used here with a different definition, meaning more like "non-conventional" or going against the traditional. With the latter, that can definitely be open to a wide variety and range of sounds. Questioning djent, on the other hand, is more straightforward IMO. There's definitely a certain style there.
That's the thing about prog: hardly any two prog bands will sound alike, because it's not about the flare or style. Some prog bands are balls to the wall heavy while others are so light one could almost not even consider it metal. What characterizes prog is bands that push rythmic and melodic structures beyond the common norms, often experimenting with odd time signatures, dissonant chord progressions and key/ tempo changes.
Progressive means exactly that, they’re progressing the genre. Metal gets stagnant just like every other genre, and it usually changes when 1 group comes and changes the game. Over the next 5 years there’s probably going to be hundreds of groups that sound like Lorna until something new comes. prog just has metal roots but they can do whatever they want.
Progressive means fuck putting music in boxes or genres. It's music and you like it or you don't. They make music how they like, while staying true to the sounds they associate themselves with.
if you arent a periphery fan you should be. they have been breaking ceilings regularly. the cool thing about prog is you can do whatever the fuck u want an get away with it under the guise of its a "prog" band.
benchmarking is ruining metal. so many people like "x is the best at y". truth is, this is the most original chorus melody and and overall song i've heard in a long time. I really appreciate it in a genre that has become so stale and stagnant.
Prog isn't a genre as much as it's a guideline for music. It's meant to sound like nothing and push the boundaries of music I guess. But then there's the copies of progressive bands that end up making that sound a genre, hence why everyone calls djent is a genre, cus bands tried to sound like meshuggah and called themselves djent.
The title of the album is literally just a shitpost cause it's something that a lot of people (Randy Blythe twitter rant, for example) view as contentious, while periphery is one of the bands that kinda DID turn it into a genre
As far as the Meshuggah comment, no, it shouldn't offend Periphery fans because even the band themselves have *joked* that they are just a Meshuggah rip-off lol
Prog is short for progressive. Meaning they don't follow the cookie cutter song structure and more or less do what they want. To the point of leaving their evil corporate label (Sumarian) and starting their own label, 3Dot Records. It's good to have bands that aren't restrained by the corporate a-holes that ruin everything.
Prog is elusive, the fact that you struggled to put it in a box is what makes it prog. Think progressive means pushing music in a direction it hasnt been before, exploring new lands if you will.
I've been saying it for years, I love Periphery musically but, Spencer's vocals hold them back. Not that he isn't a good singer but, nothing he sings is interesting or catchy at all. Their first album was great but, that's because most of the lyrics and melodies were written by the other singers that were in the band before him. Nothing has compared since.
Spencer is one of the reasons I love periphery so much especially his clean vocals. His range, versatility and the uniqueness of his voice and the way he sings certain parts fits so well with the rest of the band imo. I think it's a perfect match.
LMFAO I died when you said Spencer looks like a Human Trafficker, shit killed me
