Frustrated and bored as the Summer rain pours outside of our Flushing, NY apartment, this little 9 year old boy decides to play some of my parent's records and discovers this dark infectious voice and me and my two brothers listen over and over again until we know every song. 1974 was the summer of Nina for me. She also sang a song for the NY tourist board about New York being where the summer was best of all., I felt as if she was some strange woman with this baritone voice singing sweetly. I later discovered she was a great pianist as well. Great album.

"I need a little sugar" originally sang by my relative, the legendary Bessie Smith. I have a deep appreciation for blues jazz classics. The incomparable Miss Nina Simone made this her very own. This has remained a constant on my Playlist. Timeless.

I've always had some kind of "weird?" aspiration of starting a restaurant called The Bowl. The menu would consist of one dish/bowl entrees, not to mention salads, appetizers and desserts ... everything in a bowl. This song would be a perfect promotional jingle. Fabulous as all her other stuff, too. Brilliant blues.

I came from squid game American version
I found a tape of her music years ago in a trash bin, salvaged it and listened to it on repeat for times on end. This was one of the songs on that tape that I won't forget. Now in hindsight I realize all the symbols in the lyrics.
I love Nina but to me this is her Masterpiece

Ah, Nina Simone is sublime! Her history is inspiring and sometimes deeply sad. She became a superb concert pianist but because of racism was never allowed to perform in our concert halls. She started doing lounge singing to support herself and this launched her into fame. She was an activist and passionate in fighting racism. I miss her.
