I'd say by far the biggest reaction for the offense when Americans imitate other accents is purely the disregard we have for accuracy. We don't TRY to be as accurate as we can be or understand the language so the imitation is born of ignorance rather than understanding. Also, many other countries are multilingual. Americans only speak one language primarily. Yes, there are exceptions but it's not the majority.

In my experience Americans are way better at mimicking a range of accents than anyone else. I think its because ours is the most “neutral” accent. At least some regions. You can’t count various southern accents or New England or Midwest 😂 but there’s this new sort of “trans plant” type accent that is very neutral and almost all millennials in cities have.
The south African Model-C accent is the most neutral English accent in the world. When a person speaks South African model-C accent, you'll confuse it for an American-English, Afrikanaar-English, British, or Australian-English accent.. it's a combination of all those accents.
