My home town! LOL, Canadians are always so surprised and pleased when you remember we exist. :) Hello.
I've been to CN tower as a kid and I always remember Canada fondly. American Europe. Hopefully I'll come back soon enough. Greetings from Croatia.
They only mention my home town, Edmonton, when talking about murders or crashing roller coaster, so this is much nicer, isn't it?!

I lived in Owen Sound, back then trying to watch a hockey game from Toronto or Hamilton was many times just static, fade in and out. banging and swearing at the tv sure as hell didn't help it. Then the tower came and the signal was much better, however in the early 80's everything started switching to satellite.
@@jinglejazz7537 Hello from Owen Sound! :) My family drove to Toronto and watched them put the part of the tower on that made it the tallest freestanding structure. I visited it with my late husband in 1985. It's such an integral part of the landscape now! I always look for it when coming down highway ten from the top of Caledon mountain. If the weather is clear, you can see it far off in the distance.

In August 1976, after enjoying the restaurant and observations at that level, my fiance and I made our way up the internal elevator to the uppermost observation level, the Skypod. It was there, at the highest point on Earth that we could be without an aircraft, I asked her to be my wife. She said Yes! Today the CN Tower is still standing....and so are we.

Not to ruin your thing here, but the CN tower is nowhere near the highest point on earth... It’s only about 600 meters above sea level. I mean the city of Denver a full 1000 meters higher up.

And here I am, going through a divorce after 39 years, because he decided that my reaction to the Covid-19 pandemic meant I had given up on life, and was no longer fun any more. He literally told me that, after we had 38 years of a very happy marriage! He never once warned me he was even unhappy, either... through my shoulder surgery last year, my severe pneumonia (not Covid-19 related, due to a medication that's now adjusted!), and the whole first 7 months of the pandemic.
Then, on a random October day, he comes home from his sister's house, heads to the bedroom while he tells me he is leaving, and throws his stuff into bags and storms out... not even caring how shocked and broken I was from all of this. I was served with the initial divorce summons 5 days after our 39th anniversary. He had filed it the day after our anniversary, in fact.
I am disabled, and have 2 adult disabled sons here, both also as heartbroken and in pain from his refusal to even consider counseling as I am.
I know that you meant this comment as a great, motivating thing, and I would have agreed with you just 9 months ago... but it really hit a nerve with me, as I would do anything to save my marriage, but he ... just doesn't care.
Please don't ever let this happen to your own marriage! Always talk with your spouse, about anything at all bothering you! Never let it destroy your love for each other!

We need the Niagara power plant. Welland canal systems all 4 from the early 1700s till now. And thats just in visual shot from 1 point in Niagara. We have soo many amazing mega projects its not funny. Worlds largest hydro generators. Should see the rail system upgeade during ww2. Or the highways built then too. 100s of km threw nothing to shorten trucking time by hours.

For sure. The longest bridge in icy water anywhere in the world, which was a monster of a problem to make sure the pillars wouldn't get roughed up by ice every winter.
Heck yeah. I've gone across it a few times on family trips. The toll fee to leave the island is well worth the trip.

Very much enjoyed watching this, thanks for the memories! I worked in Sparkles at the CN Tower in 1980-81 as a barboy/bartender and hope some of you find these stories interesting. -Usually during a weekday when it was "slow", on a windy day you could stand still and feel the tower gently rocking back and forth! -When bringing cases of beer up the service elevator (it looked just like the other 3 except only used by staff) which traveled at 20 KPH, I could "feel" a certain amount of upward g-force as the elevator would slow down when approaching the main pod. The elevators are some 18-20 feet high inside so as the elevator was slowing down I eventually was able to time my jump and using the elevators momentum would be lifted 8-12 feet from the floor of the elevator (I didn't always get the timing right!). It barely lasted a second until the elevator "caught up to me"... but that was great fun! -I don't know if you can still do this today but the mens washroom on the outdoor observation deck (Sparkles was a floor above on the indoor observation deck) had a floor panel that when lifted you could look down a VERY long shaft following the curve of the tower all the way down! When opened, albeit not easily, a great whoosh of air would rush in. -Finally, watching a fireworks display from the main pod is "unusual" simply because they would always be exploding BELOW you.
While in Canada, there isn't a much bigger project than the construction of the St Lawrence Seaway.

I did the Edge walk 2 years ago when we visited Canada from Wales. An amazing structure and one of the best experiences of my life.
I love the CN tower with alot of good memories . Watched it being built , ate there with great expense and enjoyed dancing there in the 70s at a night club called Sparkles the highest night club in the world at the time plus watched lightning hitting the peak weather permitting . Its gone through many changes from a theme park of sorts at its base to hanging off the edge if you dare . It is showing its age and i get to see it by just going down to the shores of Lake Ontario and looking right . Proud to be a Canadian ..
@Ken Lompart Ken my friend i could tell alot of stories from my experiences in this phallic symbol of success . I remember being glued to my TV the day the big Sikorsky helicopter set the last piece on the top with guys up there ready to bolt it down . My girlfriend at the time and i went up there to eat , i wasnt ready for it when the menu came but cool that you got to see Toronto from a revolving view . But Sparkles had the best memories , expensive night was had by all when 4 of us went up . You had to make reservations but i got pretty drunk . But even at my age now i will never forget the image of looking out over Toronto at night on a revolving floor dancing to Donna Summers dispite my intoxication . The other great view was looking up at it from Young street in the 70s when the club was rocking with all the colored lights flashing . I live just east of Toronto now ..

There's another point in its practicality that isn't obvious, but it is perfect for getting your bearings in Toronto. You can see it pretty easily from most of the GTA on a clear day.
All the way from Hamilton and Buffalo on a good day I've been told!

@@stickynorth On a good day, one can see Rochester from the observation deck. Driving up and down the QEW to/from Niagara Falls, the CN Tower can be easily seen across the lake.
So very true. When you are down town, just spot the CN Tower and you know which way is south. Also I have walk up the CN Tower twice.
While travelling with a friend we went to see the CN Tower, and while atop he said 'Are you CN what I'm CN?'

It's so tall I can see it easily from across lake Ontario in St Catharines.
Jim, I used to use the NC Tower to navigate my sailboat all over the western end of the Lake. Once I was greatful to see the top of the Tower through low lying clouds! Saved my bacon.
That's when you can tell it's a clear day.
You can also tell if the Skydome roof is open or not from the top of the Escarpment. If it''s decent weather.

Also I remember leaving the floor of the elevator as a kid, I used to think that it was just me being a kid but my mom brought it up a couple years back and I could only respond with "that really happened? I thought I was just imagining it!"
How iconic is the CN Tower? It's on the Raptor 2019 champion ring, that's how iconic it is.
Also it's on the cover of Drake's album, "Views".
The tower will be here long after the sports team named because of a movie is gone. Yes I am still bitter about that.
If you ever watch a Blue Jays game and they have the roof open you can see the Tower. I have always wanted to visit Toronto.

I live in the what is probably the most important wasteland of nothing besides your occasional tree and farmlands, in Saskatchewan. I went to Toronto once and went up the CN tower, I’m equally excited about the mink I saw beside the lake. Very cute animal.

I did the EdgeWalk a few years ago when visiting Toronto. Pricey, but we'll worth it! I was super lucky that it was only me and one other person going up there between two full groups. We had a lot of time to take pictures of us leaning over the edge etc., and to ask questions, all of which the guide (hi Rachel) was happy to answer. I'm quite afraid of heights, but it was one of the best experiences I've ever had. If you go there and can afford the EdgeWalk, do it.

Can do you its neighbour, the Skydome? (now stupidly renamed the Rogers Centre) The venue was the first major team sports stadium in North America with a functional, fully retractable roof.

It’s 100% “The SkyDome”! Just because some corporate shills decided to name it the Rogers Centre for marketing purpose will never take away from the fact that over 2000 people voted for the name “SkyDome” and over 150,000 people took part in the naming contest back in 1989. When they erased that name, they more or less nullified the entirety of Canadian Pride that was associated in the inauguration of such a grand stadium.

Acrophobic Toronto native here, I've been up in the CN Tower over 5 times. My first trip up I was 7, just before the Skydome roof was constructed. I got a glimpse down in to our new stadium, this was before the glass floor was installed, if I recall correctly. The observation deck is really high up. The space deck, even higher up, offered me two phobias for the price of one; acrophobia and claustrophobia but with a view like that, it couldn't keep a good Canadian down. Living in Alberta now, seeing the tower as I come in to land at Pearson or Billy Bishop airports, signifies to me that I am home. My absolute favourite structure. Thank you for the wonderful video!
Simon you have got to go to the CN Tower it is absolutely amazing. Book yourself to the restaurant the food is amazing the all-round view of Toronto, if you can go in the summer it's even better. Go at dusk so you can see the sun go down you can see the beautiful city light up. It is absolutely amazing! I went a few years ago and it was one of the best meals I've ever had. While I agree generally, I have to disagree about the food... My partner and I did our 3rd anniversary dinner there, and I would describe the food as mediocre for the price point. 2 three course meals and 2 bottles of wine came to about $350 after tax and tip... and I gotta say, my risotto was pretty uninspired. Service was great though, and at least the elevator fee is included in the price of the meal!

Toronto in general has great cuisine. There's no specific food that we're known for like pizza new york or pastrami in new york or bagels in new york, but there's just such a variety of cuisine from around the world its hard not to find something you like.

I recall going to the tower before it was finished and looking through the industrial binoculars at the foot of the structure. It seemed so huge. I’ve visited the tower a few times throughout my life...but that first visit looking up had the biggest impact on my memory. 🤗😊🇨🇦

Yes, I’ve been up the CN Tower. More times than I can remember. The best time was The Night of Lighting!! I had a friend who worked there years ago and ended up one August night with the top of the tower all to ourselves at 2am during a summer lightning storm. It was one of the most spectacular things I’ve ever seen. I’m sure the tower got hit while we were watching the rest of Southern Ontario light up but felt nothing. It is an amazing lightning Rod.
We were having so much fun that security had to come up and tell us to take the last elevator down so they could lock down the tower for the night. I’ve only gone up a few times since then because once you’ve had the top of the CN Tower to yourself sharing it with others isn’t as much fun.

Being born and raised in Toronto, I sometimes forget the engineering behind, and the history of, the CN Tower that I see every day. This was a great reminder and a great video.

The man standing under the helicopter-crane is Tony Rose, a friend of mine that I had the pleasure of working with while working at AECL until his well deserved retirement some 25 years ago. Unfortunately he died late last year. He would have enjoyed your article very much.
as a toronto local, dont go to the cn tower. it’s ridiculously expensive to go up there. at the foot of it, though, there’s a cool railway museum, and a brewery you can tour really cheap that gives you enough free samples to get tipsy. then again, i live here, and it might be worth the like $30 or whatever a person it takes to go up there if you haven’t been like 10 times
the elevators on it are really cool honestly, though. your ears pop to adjust to the altitude!

Welland Canal, Trans-Canada Highway, Bell Canada Microwave system, the Confederation Bridge
St Lawrence Seaway is a better candidate than the Welland Canal.
Confederation bridge is a massive project and has ice breakers built into the pillars. It is an amazing bridge! Been a couple years since I went across though.

@@niagaradrones I suppose it is, but the Welland Canal was originally built in 1824 and the St Lawrence Seaway was built in the 1950s. The Welland Canal was expanded when the St Lawrence Seaway was built, but the St Lawrence Seaway is a much bigger thing than the Welland Canal.
The Confederation Bridge by itself is a great topic.
But if you want a national project beside the TCH - I'd suggest an episode based on the building of the "National Dream" - the building of the CPR (Canadian Pacific Railway) across the country in the late 1800's.
Toronto gets a shoutout! The CN tower turned out to be an incredible navigational aid to the Lake Ontario nautical community. On my last trip we could see the tower for 12 hours before we arrived in Toronto!

Had a great view from Queen and Niagara. Now live in suburbs. Have to at least go to airport to get a view of it now.
I've done the EdgeWalk. It is crazy fun and a one of a kind view. I thoroughly enjoyed standing at the edge and leaning forward against the rope, essentially only keeping my feet over the platform. The trains and tracks look like toys from up there.
My dad was CFO of the US division for the German company that made that slipform equipment (and the cranes) they created specifically to build the CN Tower. I was a child at the time but I remember every Monday while I was in first and second grade he would drive from our house in CT to NYC and fly to a place called “Toronto”, and I wouldn’t see him again until Friday night. And every single week he would bring me the paper drink umbrella from the Japanese restaurant where he’d have dinner. I ended up with over 100 of those paper umbrellas! I didn’t happen to visit the CN Tower until 1995, coincidentally the year it was added to the Seven Wonders list. I was 29 and visiting Toronto for work. Of course I had to do the whole dinner and observation deck deal which was fantastic. That night I called my Dad from the hotel and told him I finally saw the CN and that even though he wasn’t home much between 1972 and 1974, I could certainly appreciate the magnitude of what Heede (his company) were able to accomplish. passed in 2002, but the following year I got to show my little boy the “big spinning tower” lol that his grandpa spent two years of his life helping create. Dad and I never had the greatest relationship, but seeing the CN Tower will always make me incredibly proud of him for his having been a part of this magnificent achievement.
Watched it getting built as I would take trips to Toronto with my Dad, the city has grown so much since then.

The Pikeville Cut-Through is a rock-cut in Pikeville, Kentucky, United States created by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, through which passes a four-lane divided highway (Corridor B, numbered as U.S. Route 23 (US 23), US 119, US 460, and KY 80), a railroad line (CSX' Big Sandy Subdivision), and the Levisa Fork of the Big Sandy River.[1] It is one of the largest civil engineering projects in the western hemisphere, moving nearly 18,000,000 cubic yards (14,000,000 m3)[1] of soil and rock, compared to the Big Dig (15,000,000 cubic yards (11,000,000 m3)) and the Panama Canal (240,000,000 cubic yards (180,000,000 m3)).[2] Dr. William Hambley, who served as mayor of Pikeville for 29 years, Robert H. Holcomb, Chamber of Commerce president, and Henry Stratton, local attorney, spearheaded the project.
The Pikeville Cut-Through is 1,300 feet (400 m) wide, 3,700 feet (1.1 km) long, and is 523 feet (159 m) deep.[1] The project was completed in 1987 following 14 years of work at a cost of $77.6 million ($175 million in 2019 dollars[3]).[4]
As a Canadian, who has been to the CN Tower often and has done the stair climb. I found this video informative. Good job.
Thank you for this Simon and @Megaprojects. The white antenna section is roughly the same height and width of a Saturn V rocket, which you've recently also made a video about. On 20 July 2019, I was in a park in downtown Toronto, at roughly 1332 UTC, the time that Apollo 11 launched. The white section section is roughly at the same height about 15 seconds after ignition. It felt like I was reliving the launch from VIP section at Cape Kennedy in 1969. I don't the think the designers of the tower intentionally made the antenna to be almost the same dimensions as the Saturn V at 10 metres wide at the base and 110 metres tall, but it closely resembles those specs. Now, every time I'm downtown, and I look up to the tower, it's like I'm watching a Saturn V launch immediately after it clears the tower (LUT). Thanks again for the video.
I’d like to suggest the Confederation Bridge that connects the provinces of Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick. At 13km long it is the longest Bridge over ice covered waters in the world.

EdgeWalk 3 times myself great treat to see hear Toronto. Twilight walk was the best to date as was the first of the day,as well as a hi wind walk group after was not allowed due to the winds.
What is that like? I've been tempted.
steven cooke as long you are not fearful of the high you should full enjoy the walk as well as the skills they have you do. A few things about me 1 I am a roller coaster enthusiast,gone skydiving as well as scuba along with being a volunteer firefighter. So this walk was a rush just getting to be out on the roof as well as both seeing and hearing the sights and sounds of the city. It’s a way to learn more about you and what you can do, or a way to push your limits safety under supervision of a trained guide. Your safety is there upmost concern if you chose to do this know you will be given a breathizer test no jewelry of any kind pockets empty all goes in a locker. Another nugget of information, In the '80s you could visit 'Tour of the Universe' located at the base of the CN Tower, it was the worlds first simulation ride. The attraction led people into a space port where you waited to board the ship and were 'inoculated for your trip into space. You then were called to board and sat in seats that were programmed to move with the view people saw through the 'window'. People from Disney came up to Toronto to look at it. Now simulation rides are used in every theme park. Look up Tour of the Universe.
You should cover the Alberta Oil Sands and the truly monstrous equipment used up there. Such as the Caterpillar 797F the worlds largest dump truck.

I went up to the observation levels with a group of friends. While waiting at street-level in the queue to get on the elevator, it was a nice sunny summer day. We spent about an hour or so up there and noticed the occasional cloud wafting by below us. Upon exiting the tower back at street-level, it was obvious that it had rained down below the observation decks. The elevator ride is accompanied by one of the tour guides who described the record setting speed of it. The glass floor seemed to induce vertigo for everyone over 30 years old. There were little kids crawling and dancing on it while the adults took one step onto it and looked down and quickly moved back to the solid flooring (usually with a "holy shit!" in whatever language they spoke).
I am from California and worked for a gentleman, in the mid 1980's, who lived in Bowmanville. I was able to visit the Tower and look down as they were building the Rogers Center. I still can see the little tiny bulldozers!!!! What a Great visit and what a Beautiful City!!!!
This episode was awesome, being from Boston I didn't know Jack about the CN Tower except I knew I thought it was and is a cool design.
Once the pandemic is over and we open the border to you guys, definitely make a trip north! I live in downtown Toronto but have never been to Boston! Maybe it's time to trade places!

The company my dad worked for, Atlas Alloys, provided the nuts and bolts keeping the antenna in place. Whenever we'd go to Blue Jays games he'd always look skyward and mention that fact, beaming with pride. Always made me smile, no matter how many times I heard it.

Born and raised in Toronto, living there 1970-97. The CN Tower was certainly a major presence/landmark and frequently referred to cultural symbol. As so often when native to a city, many didn't visit it more than once. I went a couple of times including with visiting UK relatives. Once in 1994, just after they installed a partial glass floor in the lower level of the main pod. One could stand, walk, or lie spreadeagled on it. Cool. Also always fun to do the circuit of said pod on the observation level, with a 360 view of the city through glass, or on the higher, smaller 'space deck' the upper pod at a much higher elevation, which then offered a 360 walkaround in the open air with only bars as barriers. The one thing I would never have done is the tethered walk outside. Nope.
I visited the Tower in 1982. What a great experience! The view from the upper viewing area is incredible.
I've been there twice in my life and its pretty cool, a little scary standing on the glass floor parts in the observation deck (even if I know that they're rated I think for up to 2 tons of force, which I doubt anyone is going to manage jumping on it unless they sneak a jack hammer up there).
I'd suggest if anyone wants to check out the CN tower, try to go on a clear smog free day or you'll be rather disappointed by the reduced view and cloud/smog.
Luckily, Toronto really doesn't have smog days anymore.
Great video, the Canadian oil sands would also make a great mega project’s video. I also think a video on spaceX’s StarLink project would be great.
Was up in tower in 1992. Great view and experience! Even walked on the glass floor! Not scary after watching my son's do it! Great job, Canada! Love to visit and enjoy all Canada and Canadian's have to offer! From New Jersey!
I've not only been in it, I've been in the underside of the bubble where the comms gear is kept. Three things that freaked me out:
1. Strips of clear glass are glued across cracks. I asked why and was told that if the crack expanded, the glass would break and they'd know there were problems.
2. The underside of the bubble is encased in flexible canvas. There's an inner walk ring that has four doors. Because of the air flowing thru that area, the only way to open one of those doors is to punch out the hatches on the door, effectively breaking the seal.
3. I went into a room where some of the comms gear is kept. Everything seemed normal, except the lighting seemed to be experiencing problems. I looked up and saw a florescent light hanging from two chains....and it was swinging violently back and forth. Everything seemed fine to me, but that swinging light reminded me that this tower moves....A LOT. Concrete isn't supposed to move like that!
Having being born in Toronto and being up that glass elevator when I was a child, watching this was a nostalgia goose-bumper. And thank you for your kind words of Canadian modesty, it's something I think we all here strive for. Sorry! Eh?

I've been up to the top of the CN Tower 4 or 5 times in my teen years (early 80s)... It really is a sight to see... On a really clear day you can see Buffalo... But my best memory was actually down in the Lobby... They had a HUGE CN Tower (+/- 30 feet tall) built entirely with LEGOS... Now THAT was kewl...
Another MUST SEE attraction in Toronto is the absolutely amazing Toronto Science Center... It will BLOW YOUR MIND... You will be awestruck after spending a day in that place... Once again, back in the 80s for me... I'm sure it's even better now... 6 out of 5 stars...

I go and take family that visit. You should try the restaurant, it is amazing.
Rumpel Felt True, it is expensive. If you eat at the restaurant you get to view the rest of the CN Tower for free but the cost of the meal is pricey.

Great video and growing up in Toronto. I was proud of the CN Tower. I also did the edge walk when it first came out. It was quite a thrill.
I've lived in Toronto my whole life. And I gotta say, I haven't heard anyone talk about the tower with so much enthusiasm before.

PS. The Welland Canal is a pretty awesome mega project nearby. We can take you there after a day trip to the falls.
I actually have family history with the Welland Canal. My mom was part owner of one of the companies that replaced the lumber in it during the conversion from imperial to metric.

I live about an hour drive north of Toronto, and it still amazes me how far north of Toronto you can be and still see the CN tower on the horizon.
Thanks Simon. As a young kid, I visited the CN Town in 1979 and was awestruck. I’ve visited Toronto and the tower many more times and I’m still awestruck. The Canadian people are incredibly friendly and courteous while being humble and proud. I highly recommend you make a visit to Canada a buck list item.
How about you look up Quebec's hydro-power infrastructure, dozens of dams, tens of thousands of kilometers of wiring linking distant dams to power distributions centers, more recently dozens of wind-farms. Every single watt from renewable sources, not a drop of fossil fuels or nuclear energy in sight.
A lot of fossil fuel used to build the dams, land flooded. You can't build much without burning fossil fuels

Hey, like moose visit the tower all the time, eh?I grew up in Toronto. I've done the CN Tower stair climb a few times. I've even eaten in the revolving restaurant once. The base is now home to Ripley's Aquarium, almost a mega project in itself. The lighting is just awesome. If you ever travel to Toronto, I recommend a visit to this attraction, but bring your wallet because it isn't cheap.
Go to the restaurant for the view not the food, almost an infinite number of better places to eat in Toronto.
I went in a trip right across Canada with my father in 1978, starting in Toronto. The first place I went was the CN tower & I saw the big AV show based there. In fact this changed my life because later I went into AV production & was in it for almost a decade.

I remember watching the tower being built like it was yesterday. I lived on Kipling Ave and had a clear view. The helicopter was something to watch and generated a huge buzz in the city.
I've been up the CN Tower 3 times now and loved it every time. I've haven't even made it to the Sky Pod let alone go on the Edge Walk--no how no way and I going anywhere near the Edge Walk.
I've been in the restaurant but yeah, no way am I going out on the edge.
According to some, this was not the tallest structure in the world, there was a radio mast in Poland in Konstantynów that was 646 meters tall, as it could broadcast its signal to the other side of the world for Poles around the globe.
It was built using helicopters as there was no crane tall enough for the job.
The antenna was so powerful that during misty days you could listen to the radio "from the air" as it was resonating with water particles in the air.
Unfortunately it had collapsed.
Would be a good idea for another Megaproject. ;-)
MrsGozdzikova Yeah, not the tallest structure of any kind, but the tallest unsupported freestanding structure. The Polish radio tower was supported by guy wires.

You forgot to mention the sway/flex factor built into the structure. It flexes on average up to 6m in any direction from true in high winds, which is just crazy for a concrete structure

I'd forgotten the hoopla when Olga lifted the last bit of antenna. Fun fact, in the 360 restaurant there was usually a parade of purses as you ate. Women set them beside them and did not realize the window ledge did not rotate. Rarely did the presentation of the check align with the return of the purse.
