- HAWKWIND 1984 Solstice at stonehenge
04 watching the grass grow
The story goes that, according to British law, any festival that runs successfully for 13 consecutive years enters the statute books under an ancient charter and becomes a public festival for all time. The Summer Solstice of 1984 marked the twelfth anniversary of the Stonehenge free festival. Headlining the show were space rockers Hawkwind. As usual the festival was a peaceful affair, attracting thousands of freedom loving folk in search of loud music, good fun and mind-altering substances. Fast-forward twelve months and it was an entirely different story. The authorities launched a massive operation, moving in with force to prevent the festival from happening, resulting in the fencing off of Britain's most famous ancient monument and an end to the free festival.
Fortune would have it that home-video pioneers Jetisoundz had arranged to record the events of the 21st June 1984. The film features Hawkwind's improvised performance of 'Ritual of Light and Dark' on the eve of the Solstice which continued after dawn, following the celebrated invasion of the Stones. In spite of the laid back party ambience this remains one of the bands most poignant sets in their thirty odd year career.
The classic line up of Dave Brock, Nik Turner, Harvey Bainbridge, Huw Lloyd-Langton, Alan Davy and Danny Thompson makes this recording all the more important. 'The Solstice at Stonehenge' is by far the most historically significant of Hawkwind's audio/visual output and should be cherished by fans, collectors and the curious alike. Love and peace!!!

Nik Turner, traveller through time, a survivor
I ate at Bob Evans with Nick Turner
I was there, totally tripping
In all it's incarnations, literally the best band ever
I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN.👍
until 2005 when it became the dave brock band...last good album was 'in your area'....
I saw an interview with Nik Turner talking about what it was like sharing a house with Lemmy...he said Lemmy would be awake for a week then sleep for a week and how he could not relate to that lol ⚡
This was my first Festival an first Hawkwind experience, blew my head clean orf it did! 😆
Me too, also my first time on acid 😉 I also remember drinking a Tequila Sunrise cocktail on a London Double Decker tripping my tits off, wonderful memories, changed me forever!
same here..remember these and flux of pink indians playing
Was at Henge 82,3,4 saw / heard HW each time. Don't remember much lol!
God save Dave Brock and his crew!!!
What great times they were. So carefree and easy.
Phenomenal!!! Legend...Hawkwind forever!!!
R.I.P.. nik turner 💚
I was at the front for this - it is incredible how fast people will move when they realise a couple of fire breathers are in their midst.
I was there, with my half gallon of screech, my small pouch of hashish, and a buzz of mushroom doughnuts in my head.. Last one, sadly.
@@TheGedByrne Unicorns and Microdots. Beautiful sunset.
I saw a video a while back that took place in either India or Pakistan… anyways, there was a celebration parade taking place, and one of the dudes walking in the parade decided to pull this same stunt. He ended up setting himself on fire and scorching his lungs. Whether he survived that or not, I don’t know. They were about to get the fire extinguished quickly, but how badly his lungs were burned will tell the story
I printed flyers for the Stonehenge free festival the free festival followed by Babylon action in Beanfield lest we forget.
He doesn't know what he's doing tonight man. Thats a classic intro.
I.C.U. were an awesome band LIVE, mainly the " live at stonedhenge 1981" and there dingwalls gigs.
R.I.P. Mr Calvert and Nik Turner.
Good old huw Lloyd in his trademark leather jacket!R.i.p Huw,a true gentleman.peace
In 2023 no chance of a Henge happening. In search of space all time acid inspired music.
I saw them 4 times in the early 80s and then once more 30 years later 😜 the last gig is the only one I can remember though 😜
power to Nik Turner!
Holly fuck..I was there.18 and of my fucking bonce.
Fantastic I was there 84 ..
i was there
my firstn real festy and acid experience..
I was right at the front, only 17 and will never forget this event ,ok it had a few probs but considering how many attended it was fantastic .Everything was on offer and NO police, free for over a month and all put together by folks free of charge.Festivals are nothing more than diluted shit now,200 plus for 3 days of pop crap no thanks, the authorities killed this to reinvent it in the form of ....wait for it folks CORPFEST,bollox to it.I wish i could have frozen time and stayed there with all those happy ,crazy fun anarchic people, convoy circle ,the paralization station and the loco coco aahhh blissfull days, bless all of you that made it happen and fond memories of alice one of the dancers no longer with us.Bry iow
When they invent that time machine, this is the first place I'm going. The defining event of my life. *sigh*
i mean there’s psych festivals happening
Alice is dead?
So good, Miss Huey and Alan a lot.
Been to a lot of festivals in my time, this was one of my first, and still the absolute best thing ever. 1 fucking month!
Beyond Brilliant!!!
Tiny little seeds of thought.
My 1st festival,we lived up the road in fleet and used to fly down and score acid (itwent on for weeks as i remember)
This is fkn ambrosia - i got chills at the beginning ! Great riffs!
It was one hell of a night 😊
I was there, at my last Stonehenge... (Though that stage looks much larger than I remember) Note, they played a few times while with us.. Daytime too. Fun days
That was indeed the story. I got to West Germany in September 1984, and by May, 1985 we knew to cancel Midsummer's at Stonehenge as it was obviously going to be a confrontation not in the spirit of earlier incarnations.
Rip Nik
bong a dong a bong a dong bang a whanga oh yes we are we are we all are all the time for ever bonga donga bonga donga simple stuff repetitous over and over and over again, leading to a trance like state...

Dammend Shit.......it's me. Spitting Fire. Fuck it. Never saw that Video but have sooooooo much memory of it. And just found out that Nick faith away. So sorry. Greetings to al TUMT's that where there. Keep up and never let the fire stop burning👹🤡💥💥💥💥
Alans frist gig
Ken Baalooh, Ken Baalooh! Those green barrels (Or purple pyramids, the details are all a bit sketchy) were such tiny tiny things, but . . . fuck me, they were Pokey. As. Fuck. I think they've just about worn off now though. The World was such a very different place, only the day before this Mon Yew Mental gig took place. Was the ever Hope for Wally? Did we really Hele the Stone?
Our beating red, hearts tapping at the taped up, painted window panes, as the world turned day-glow, you know?
Who were you, Ken Baaloo, as I sit in the coach, sucking a roach?
And as we approached escape velocity, the new sun began it's Zenith climb into a fresh new sky, and we all lit up with That Fire that never consumed, but burned so brightly, even the Sun at it's most brilliant seemed dull in comparison.
I can blow on the embers still, and create a blaze that can burn away the accumulated patina of 30 years like it was the morning dew. And it's nearly that time of year again. Daddy long legs bumbles along in it's parody of flight as usual, Leather jacket left on the ground somewhere or other, as it to say "Drop everything, and have some fun, guy". Good advice. I'll take it, break it, shake it, and make it back, more or less in the mess I confess is my usual state, because that's my good fate Mate, it's great. Be lucky. L8rzen . . .
Ken Balooooo, Ken Baloooooo, Ken Balooooooo!
@@belch1889 🤣🤣🤣🤣 just a distant happy memory.. Thank you William roach.
That was poetry - Long Live the Freaks!!!😂
All Rock Bands should have at least 2 Female Go Go or Interpretative Dancers on stage with them while they play.
This might have saved Rock n Roll.
Top
now the thing is - was I there? I do know I saw Hawkwind at Henge a couple of times in the 80s. Both times on blotters so my memory is weirded out. And I was a teenager so it was a long while back.
Uber Cool.
I was there with a mate it was totally lawless chalk board with drugs prices on them everyone off thier heads saw a gang of 4 guys who turned up in a transit went into Salisbury and got a brand new Ford escort and completely stripped it and just left the bare shell On the Sunday there was cars being set on fire all over the place obviously been stolen and didn't want to leave any evidence behind Besides that it was a great weekend but you can see why the police cracked down the next year in the battle of the beanfields
There were three or four car fires and two of those cars belonged to heroin dealing sharks. It had grown to quite a size, about 30,000 turned up. Many weren't surprised that the police stopped the festival from happening the following year but what I can never forget or forgive was the rampant violence of the police at the Beanfield, it was shameful.
Down front wondering who the fuck was on bass. 3 weeks earlier it was Harvey...
:-)
There is barely anything more.
Hakwind, horrelako musikotakin ikasi genun aitzen ta frogatzen laurogeiko amarkadan kendiak dantza indakua....
What happened to Ron Tree ?
before Ron's time....
who`s the lead singer?
I believe it's Nik Turner.
I shop. I have to buy the product or die.
daves really loving this!
shame he sacked nik.... AGAIN......
Nik is one of my all-time heroes.
The band sacked Nick. Dave is a really nice guy. I could tell you stories about Nick.
@@AnGoosen ha ha...please do!!!
I was lying in the corner of a tent stoned off my tits on acid during this. Sadly. What a waste.
How much LSD was consumed at this show 😂
Not a lot , in 84.
"by far the most historically significant of Hawkwind's audio/visual output" - what a load of bollocks. The footage that you (Cherry Red) have had under wraps for years, of Bob Calvert fronting Hawkwind/Hawklords in 1978 blows this out of the water. The only real footage of Calvert at his peak. Except you won't let anyone see it. Even when someone (me) offered to fund the digitizing and production. Very sad.
Yeah man.we want,no we need better Calvert footage!!!
HEY CHERRY RED , ig you got the Hawklords live footage, come on and release it for the people someh0ow eh ffs, thanks!
I would so love to see that footage. Come on Cherry Red, it's a historical document. People need to see it :-)
?
Wow cherry red bought the rights to this ...FUCKING HALARIOUS LOL
was at this.... .....or my body was here....
don't make festivals like this anymore....
like watching a slow flashback....
I think the foreign office is not hot enough. I am far sexier than you can imagine but I can't be bothered.
WHAT are those girls doing?flailing around = entertainment? lol
I find listening, rather than watching, a better experience. HAHAHA
I was entertained...
I thought it was the best thing about it.
"by far the most historically significant of Hawkwind's audio/visual output" Just so much sales blablabla.
Only for Hawkwind dilettantes .
Jesus, someone get Nik Turner off the stage 🙄
They don't know how to play
LOL!... and you don't know what you're saying!... Listen to their album "Warrior on the Edge of Time"
Still in love with that girl @1.11... Have to admit it. Still.
I see we have a couple of plastic punks here.
Could have been my first wife, spitting image
She's likely a grandmother by now lol
She's lovely.
She would be about 60 now, and long......................
