This just proved that Metallica has not fallen off. It is just the production that has changed.
It's a shame so few people understand this. Metallica is always great. Only the sound changes.
I kind of like the older versions of them more than the younger versions, because of James's voice being more prominent, deeper and more powerful in the recordings starting with Death Magnetic. I mean, his voice in the earlier albums like Ride the Lighnting to the Black Album doesn't sound natural, like there's a filter behind it, or it's from the 80s mic giving his voice the Ozzy treatment or the 1940s treatment.

I know! right? It’s amazing how easily perception can be change. Particularly I don’t like the new album that much, but when you here the songs in this point of view, somehow they made sense. It’s weird to explain. In the album this song sounds modern, yes, but it feels kind of dull, like it’s compressed and sounds hollow. And this makes the passing sound odd, boring even. It all comes down to context I guess

@@Vertical-sandwiches To be fair, it's scary how much the music also fits the general AJFA vibe. Of course, there are some small tasteful changes to the riffing and drums to bring it into AJFA territory, but this song in this form could have easily been a demo song which got lost in the transition from AJFA to the Black Album. 72 Seasons for example would not fit that well musically into the AJFA period.
This here sounds like a demo which was written during AJFA writing sessions, got discarded and then in the end became "Through The Never" - a lot of musical similarities.

It’s mainly Lars’ drumming style that has fallen off heavily after the 90s and Kirk’s terrible solos. Hetfield still writes killer riffs tho

Production matters. If this song was on AJFA, it would've been a distant B-side. However, hearing that Mesa Mark IIC tone with that thin tight drum tone and minimal bass frequency, felt like listening to AJFA all over again.
I was just about to say something similar. It sounds authentic but I think they would have left it on the cutting room floor when choosing the songs to put on the album

It sounds great but still... it's like a B side forgotten track of And Justice... It doesn't have the aggression and evilness of that album. It's a litlle bit funky and happy. Saying that it's one of my favorite from 72 Seasons and a very good song. That's because And Justice is a masterpiece, second best metal album ever, after Rust In Peace of course
