    Where to begin... This episode shows some of the less cool things about living on the road in a van. We were hoping our problems were gone, but then apparently everything hit us at once. "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger" some say. In this episode we got tested like never before and somehow you always manage to pull through. But what were the consequences in this case?

    This was so stressful!🤯🥵 Anyone that can relate/have a similar story?

      Yes! We went to Switzerland this summer with our Land rover discovery and a rooftop tent (and our dog Zoë). As we drove the Gottard pass out gear box broke. And all though there's never a good timing this was awful timing in the mountains. We were so tired of driving all night. And our dog as well. My boyfriend is a mechanic and managed to get the car to a campsite, full of children and footballs which made our dog so stressed out. Luckily we had very good insurance and after a whirlwind of stress and getting the car to a mechanic shop nearby we got everything sorted. The insurance covered our car being shipped back home and got us a rental car ( a brand new Volvo!) We tried to make the best of our holiday after a bad start and had a great time. When we got back my boyfriend ordered a new gear box and fixed the car. But this holiday will not be forgotten easily.
      We hope to visit Norway this winter or spring, depending on the Corona situation.

      I'm sure there are a lot of relatable stories - but having your engine flooded, nice and quietly, by spring tide? Nah, you win.

      @@xWoofiex It sort of has to be said - that matches the brand 😅 A YT channel bought one of the new Defenders - and had the Check Engine light come on after 167 miles. Glad you overcame the blow(up) and had a good trip!

      I have a similar story but it wasn’t with my Westy, this summer I was exploring my province and I took my 2004 jetta to one of the national parks 5 hours away and it ended up completely losing power and went into “limp mode” fortunately my parents ended up saving us but my Jetta was stuck in a town 5 hours away for close to a week!

    Vw community is amazing 😍 im from sweden and for like 8 years ago I was driving my old t3 aircoold to a VW meet 700km from home, broke down 100km from the meet (flexplate between engine and gearbox on automatic was broken)
    Got it to the meet and after the meet a random guy from my hometown rented a trailer and picked me and my bus up at the meet. What a Hero 🤩

    I have a '82 T-3 Camper with gas engine. I'm on my 3rd engine. They seem to last about 120,000 to 160,000 miles. Then the 3rd cylinder rings give out. Love it though and have done lots of enhancements on it to make it better for vanlife/trips.
    I have been towed home twice. Once when the mechanic didn't torque down the CV bolts and they broke one at time. The other time a wire came loose off the engine (loss of a ground) and the engine just would not run. I have run down the battery but each time I was able to bump start it with the clutch. Once by enlisting some homeless folks living under a bridge where I had parked for the day! Can do it in reverse if necessary, but generally just as fast as you were pushing will do it and put it into 2nd gear.
    These will be great stories! Especially the tide! Love it! Flush the underside to get the salt off for sure!

      Sounds like you should make videos on your own with stories like these! Cool! Even though it’s great fun to deal with issues like these sometimes, they are kind of worrying when they occur a day before you’re supposed to be back at work after a holiday. Haha

    Hi! For clutch problems in emergency situations - on the top of gearboxes' bell there should be an inspection hole - press the clutch pedal, soak flywheel @nd clutch with sticky fluid (like coca cola). Rotate the engine and repeat until the whole clutch plate will be sticky enought to transer the engine power ;)
    Good luck with a renovation!

    Sadly it’s part of old VW ownership but the rewards they give back make it worth all the blood sweat and tears.Our T3 only broke down twice in 8 years and both were on the same day and were easy to rectify, our T2 broke down last year for the 1st time and left us stranded for 4.5 hours on a motorway so we understand your pain.

    We had that once in Austria. I found a nice spot at the river, and I have to know that it was a stupid idea.... lots of old trees hanging in other trees beside the creek. We made a fire in the evening and so far so good.
    Around 22.00 hour we deside to go inside the Hymer to view a movie on Netflix. Around 23.00 hour I take a little peek outside behind the screens.... huh...the fire was out?
    I open the door and what did I see.... a hugh wild river around the camper at night!
    Just in time to get the hell out of there.
    Never forget that evening!
    Take care and be save!
    Greetings from The Netherlands

    I have a T25 and it did have a 1.9 petrol engine in it, it was too slow and dangerous as other drivers were always trying to pass me in difficult spots. To buy a reconditioned 2.1 boxer would cost 3k euro so instead I put a 2.0l Subaru flat 4 engine in her which increased HP from 89HP to 130Hp and now allows me to keep up with the flowing traffic. I feel much safer driving it now. It was much cheaper to do this conversion and you get a modern reliable fuel efficient engine. It is a popular conversion in California because it allows the T3 to pass the very strict smog test. The previous Subaru I had. had its engine removed and put in a mono plane. That is the type of engine I like reliable.

    • @SimonBraeck
      @SimonBraeck  3 роки тому

      I’ve heard good things about these Subaru conversions. I don’t think they are that common here in Norway, and also I feel like most of the Vanagon that are available here are diesels, making the Subi conversion somewhat more complicated. Maybe we’ll consider this as an option in the future, but for now we are doing the 1.9TDK (with a few tweaks to boost performance)😊

    • @tombowen552
      @tombowen552 3 роки тому

      Yes they are not that common in Ireland but I took the chance and it worked very well.

And that was just the beginning of the journey. I nearly got flooded by the tide on Anglesey North Wales. The off grid carpark sign said "Liable to flooding". In my book, that means very high tides. I checked the tides and they weren't particularly high. So just about to go to bed at the highest point of the carpark and thought I'd check the tide. Opened the sliding door and we were in the sea!😱 I just drove and saved the campervan. The sign should have said: "Carpark floods at high tide." Looking back, we were in about 4/5" on water.

      @@SimonBraeck Good afternoon, Simon! You know he won't go faster? It will just be much more fun to accelerate and easier to operate under load. When I installed ahu, I naively hoped that it would go a little faster, although I know perfectly well that the speed depends on the gear ratios of the gearbox. In summary: cruising speed 77-80 kph, but the thrust is very powerful. Once I had to pull a 2.5-ton jeep, whose brakes were jammed)) I did it.

    Glad there was a happy ending and Mr Norris will live on. Was it the flood that caused the engine and clutch problems? Do you know how high the flood was? Shame the trip is over now but really looking forward to seeing what you folkens are up to next :)

    • @SimonBraeck
      @SimonBraeck  4 роки тому

      Me too :) About 3,5 meters according to the web, which was really surprising! It was never higher than the exhaust so I really doubt it had much to do with the other parts failing. After having taken out the old engine, we realized how tired it was and I’m glad this forced us to proceed with the swap. AAZ all the way for us, really stoked to see how it performs. The folkens will be back, together with Norris new heart, stronger than ever🤗🤗

    • @davidchase7166

      @@SimonBraeck Yeah that's what I was thinking. If the water was that high to cause engine trouble then surely there would be water in the van as the door seals aren't usually that good. Your going to love having the AAZ, but as with all of these vans your always chasing the weak link. It's really nice to see other enthusiasts helping you out too. That's one thing I love about the VW community. Do you know how long it will be before he's back up and running?

    • @SimonBraeck
      @SimonBraeck  4 роки тому

      Indeed, I feel that point about the weak link. Luckily, the more parts we change, the more overview we have of the total status of the van, as we haven’t owned this van since it was new. Feels good to take care of it and make it “up to date”. Now we’re waiting for a refurbished diesel pump before the engine can be installed. Let’s hope things are done within 2-3 weeks
