Great Conjunction 2020 - Live Views of Jupiter and Saturn from Exeter, UK

  • In late December 2020, the two largest planets in our Solar System, Jupiter and Saturn, will be so close in the sky that they’ll both be visible through a telescope eyepiece at the same time. Such close passes are known as Great Conjunctions. The Great Conjunction of 2020 will be the closest in almost 400 years.
    In this live stream the Astrophysics Group at the University of Exeter and the Exeter Science Centre try to bring you live views of Jupiter and Saturn from a telescope. We also have a panel of expert speakers answering questions.

    Well, here in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States of America we have had several very cloudy days and we could not see (and try to photograph) the Star of Bethlehem or The Christmas Star, despite my travel of several tens of miles looking for a clear space!
    Well I tried because I can't wait another 800 or 400 years for the next conjunction like this that just happened!
    Fortunately and thanks to the excellent work and enormous passion of the Collective of Doctors of the Public Research University in Exeter, Devon, South West England, United Kingdom and the wonders of technologies and the Internet, I was able to enjoy more than a simple vision of the astronomical event , a very didactic and instructive conference.
    Thank you, many Thanks to the professors at the University of Exeter and everyone who helped produce this wonderful video on your Physics at Exeter channel.
    If someone could put the subtitles in Spanish this video could be a good study material for us Latinos, I recommend it.

    Spectacular! I feel sort of priviliged really to see the Great Conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter. Wonderful presentation and explanations from the Exeter team. I was also intrigued by the contribution from a mathematician, Dr Stephen Thomson. I wonder if he trying a different tack in solving Riemann's Hypothesis - the solution may be in the stars, or perhaps the planets! Come to think of it, the Great Conjunction might augur Dr Thomson's solving the great conjecture! Geddit? Thank you for a wonderful presentaion! Loved it! Roll on 2040, 80 and so on...

Went out with my binoculars with my wife and daughter to see the great conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter, unfortunately too cloudy couldn't see anything also not sure if we even located the right part of the sky. Would love to visit the university for a demo of how to view planets and constellations in future and what equipment we need as an armature. Thank you for the coverage, great job team.

    I am an old student of St Luke's College, Exeter (1984) and live in Cheshire. Earlier this evening my wife and I finished our afternoon at Tatton Park, nr Knutsford with the grandchildren (Covid rules) and were heading for home in Stockport when I realized that the conditions were perfect to see the Great Conjuction. It was 4pm...the sky was perfectly clear and yellowish just before sunset. Once we cleared the woodland of the hall we looked in the south west to try to see the planets. All we could see was the moon but no sign of planets. As we passed through the centre of Knutsford my wife shouted "I can see it to the right of the moon, but now its gone in the trees". I turned down into a valley heading home. I wasn't going to miss it. I made a loop of the town and we finally could see the planets close together across a village green, at 5pm. We took several shots at leisure and that was the end of that. We got there in the end. My wife could see two separate planets with the naked eye but I could only see one mass...Saturn above Jupiter.

    This was all great to see, but I was really hoping to see the two planets coming together at one point, on 21st. A lot of us live in areas that are cloudy on this day, so I was hoping to find a serious live stream like this, to see the actual conjunction live today after sunset in European time. Such a shame. But thank you anyway.

    • @matthewbate5815
      @matthewbate5815 3 роки тому

      Jupiter and Saturn don't come together to overlap during this conjunction. They 'only' get as close as 1/5 the Moon's diameter. On the 20th, they were 1/3 of the Moon's diameter apart, so about 50% further apart than on the 21st, but fairly similar.

      @@matthewbate5815 Hello, thank you for the answer. I somehow understood, mainly from the media, that the conjunction on the 21st December will appear to the naked eye as one bright star. So it never came close enough to shine as one star? I think this is what everyone wished and hoped to see live. I have seen it on your live stream last few days but not so close. I live in Vienna, it was totally cloudy for weeks now, still is.

    • @matthewbate5815
      @matthewbate5815 3 роки тому

      @@sachertorte9806 Yes, the media went a little overboard with the idea of them appearing as a single bright star. They got close, but were still distinguishable as two separate objects. I must be getting old.. these professors look way too young ... :D :D :D Thank you so much for doing this. I live in the midwestern USA, and it was cloudy and rainy; I had been so looking forward to seeing this. If I am correct, it still should look fairly impressive tomorrow night, so hoping it will clear up! Happy Solstice/Conjunction all!

    What way do I look towards later on today and what is the best time roughly?

      Look to the southwest, close to the horizon from about 1/2 an hour after sunset. Best time probably about 1 hour after sunset.

      @nobita nobi Twinkline things in the night sky are all stars, producing their own light. Our sun is a star, so all of them are like our sun and have their own solar systems...That blows my mind X
