    Great tip! It always takes so long to get those suckers in but not anymore!

    Oh how I wish I would've seen this video 4 years ago when I first installed drip irrigation. I would've saved myself from all of the blisters from doing this incorrectly and not having a thermos nearby to keep a constant source of hot water. I painfully inserted so many of those small emitters by hand that I vowed to never use them again because I didn't know there was an easier way. You live and you learn. 😉

      Ouch, blisters! What we do to love our plants, ha! Thank you so much for watching and telling your story. I love hearing from people. I feel your pain too. I once did so many emitters in one day my fingertips started to bleed under the nail. I, like you, vowed to not let That happen ever again. Hence, the hot water now. Ha!

    Thank you so much for your drip videos! I have been struggling to repair the system that the previous owner put in. So many problems! Do you have a recommendation for mainline tee so I can connect a 1/2 PVC riser to two mainlines?

      You are so welcome Mauronic 100 (haha you make me laugh)! I have a new video short about drip coming out soon. You mean to change lawn sprayers to drip? There is a fitting that t's off from pvc and has a pressure reducer in it so that you can install drip lines to it. I buy all my irrigation products from Wyatt Irrigation in Santa Rosa CA. If I haven't answered your question they are very helpful (although overwhelmed alot of the time). You could say The Gardening Tutor sent you and if you don't get a good answer maybe kindly ask to speak with a manager. Clapping for you doing all that work. I know exactly what you are going through! -mary

      @@TheGardeningTutor I meant from my regular 1/2 PVC sprinkler pipe.You make a good point though, I wonder if my pressure is too high for drip. The tubing is CONSTANTLY getting blown off from the barbs on the manifolds. And the mainline tubing that I referred to is getting pushed out. I guess I should check the pressure of the system first and foremost. All 4 zones use drip right now.

      p.s. I checked Wyatt's online store and it is not set up to easily navigate. (I live in LA)

      Yes, you are having this problem because you have not put a pressure reducer on that old sprinkler line. Luckily there is a t fitting that has the reducer in it. Let me look into this in person at Wyatt's and let you know. So, you have a 1/2" riser now and you want to convert it to dripline with a T fitting (with the reducer in it). Correct?

      @@TheGardeningTutor oh gosh you're so sweet. I think It would be best to put a pressure regulator at the source since I and feeding four zones. The main recommendation I need really is the best type of tea to get for 1/2-in tubing. I see that they sell barbed fittings, compression fittings and lock nut fittings.

    Hi Mary, thanks for these drip videos! I installed my own system last year and this year I am troubleshooting all the problems that came up over the winter (I'm in IL). Like some of my 1/2 mainline developed cracks/leaks that I now have to repair. Was there something i was supposed to do to winterize the system? All I did was disconnect it from the timer and cover the end so it wouldn't get bugs in it. Also I have a 1/2 mainline that suddenly doesn't work after a certain area. If there's a clog in the line somehow, is there a good way to get it out or should I just replace that whole portion? I think it would be great if you did a video on drip irrigation for containers, and also one for troubleshooting! Thanks, Chris

      Hi Christine, thank you for saying "Hi". People think I'm a computer, I think. So it snows where you live? Dripline is meant to stay covered with at least 3 inches of mulch (compost, bark or any other mulch) to protect it from sun as sunlight can degrade the line over time. Critters can gnaw on the lines too doing some pretty bad damage. I don't know about snow as we do not get snow here. We do get freezes and frost so I cover my valves with thick towels when a freeze is forecast but the driplines themselves are under my compost and not full of water so there's nothing more to do for the lines.
      As to your other issue, mainline can be squeezed (putting a kink in it) by roots of shrubs or other plants as the roots grow in girth. Then the system will water up to that kinked point and will not let water past the kink. I haven't ever seen anything that gets into the mainline itself to actually clog it up. So, look for roots. I do flush all the lines in spring when I first turn the system back on though to flush out small bits of debris that may be in the line.
      Thanks for the suggestions. You know you can watch my videos ad free on my Vimeo channel, yes? -mary

      @@TheGardeningTutor Thank you Mary! Your reply was really helpful. I did not know that about the sun damaging the lines. I have had critters chew off some of my adjustable emitters. When you say you flush your lines, what exactly do you mean? do you take the pressure regulator off? Thanks so much! Chris

    • @TheGardeningTutor
      @TheGardeningTutor  2 роки тому

      Flushing the lines means to open the end of each mainline (one at a time) and turn on that zone to let the water flow through and out the end of the line. I use figure eights (plastic figure eight shaped piece of plastic made to close the end of mainlines) on the ends of my lines instead of screw on fittings. Figure eights make it easy to just slide the figure eight down and unfold the end of the line to let the water out. Refold (or kink) and slide the eight back in place to close the line. Screw on types of ends make it impossible to flush the lines without getting wet. Clearing or flushing the lines only needs to be done first thing in spring when you have city water but if you have a well you may need to to this every month or however often it needs it as minerals etc. build up in the line from the well water.
      Also, another maintainance thing is to clean the filters on the valves that have drip.

      @@TheGardeningTutor Thank you again, Mary for your helpful info! It's raining here today (finally! yay!) but I will try flushing the lines tomorrow.
