I have made a lot of changes in the garden and on the homestead this year. And I've been thinking of how some of these changes have affected my productivity and my mental health. I want your gardening or homesteading journey to be long-lived and successful, so today I have 5 tips for you on how to make sure your homestead doesn't get overwhelming or stressful to the point that it is no longer sustainable or functional.

I have a small garden and used to have a drip system, but now I do all my watering by hand. It's my favorite time of the day watering the garden first thing in the morning. I'm so much more engaged and connected with the garden now.
I really do love watering by hand. I appreciate the drip system so that I don't have to do it everyday, but I do miss the romance!

Thank you Megan for the tips. I am new at homesteading just recently purchased 2.5 acres in the high desert of Arizona and I am very excited to start and have tons of plans. Your recommendation of taking it slow is good for me to hear, I want to get it started and done right now, but know that money, time and my energy for a 66 year old is going to help keep it slow. I do have some knowledge of gardening, but in a very different environment - PNW. So I am learning and researching everything I get my hands on for gardening in my new home. Your channel is my new favorite on UA-cam and love all the info you share. So thank you once again for the tips and sharing gardening in the desert and homesteading!

Thank you for the chat. I understand the overwhelm. I get so excited in the slow time and buy and start too many seeds then later, when I have to handwater it all, I feel so overwhelmed! Learning to pace myself and also edit is important. I will be deleting one new garden bed because it takes too much time. 3 hours of handwatering once a day is too much. Once our temps are 110 that will double. I would love to see another garden tour! Love your channel!!!

I very often jump neck-deep into new hobbies and such. I think your points are very beneficial to many things in life, and I should definitely stop buying more fruit trees for a year or two..haha. All the best to you!
Hahaha the amount of fruit trees I have bought and killed over the years is ASTOUDING. 🤣
@thefiresidefarms it happens. I'm up in New Jersey so besides citrus, most fruit trees take really well here.
We are always learning, no matter if you have a animals lol I have a back yard in the middle of the city, but I love growing food for my family and yes a homesteading is a dream, I do what I can in my small garden 🪴, and I like it love it so far 😁 thank you for the tips maybe one day I will be using them ❤

Thanks Megan, I needed to hear this. We’ve just recently bought a couple acres and I will be starting over. We currently live in the low desert of Az and our moving to much higher elevation in Az so I will need to learn a whole new growing zone too. I always have to tell myself to slow down. I tend to want to get it done fast. I appreciate this video so much. Jennifer

I want to make soap also along with candles! I used to be able to crochet, but for some awful reason I have not been able to do it again. I mess it up. I can’t get the needle in there of course I’m legally blind too so lol
I did start sewing with a sewing machine and making quilts. But then they got put on the back burner because I started gardening and I don’t have the time.
I really want to learn to make soap! And it's ok that gardening is taking up your time right now. That's a good thing. Enjoy the garden while it lasts for the summer and fall 😃
