- I've been testing out my new large sketchbook to the brink and I want to show you what all it can handle. I also test it out by painting a Mary Fedden painting with acrylic ink. I do struggle with starting a new sketchbook because I have that fear of making mistakes. I try to remind myself that there is no template and this is just a place to play, but the worrier in me can't let it go.
I got some sketchbooks on a really good sale and in one of them I wrote myself a note: Dear me, you paid $4.99 for this and you bought 3 of them. Get over yourself and use this because you have 2 more if you hate the way it turns out. Also, they will never stop making paper and you and I both know you're going to buy more. 🤣
I have since bought much more paper and sketchbooks and I have been using them. My husband said he was going to mark pages in the untouched ones so they wouldn't be new and I'd have no reason not to use them.
I loved the series of paintings at the 16:40 mark, especially the colors.of the last one that looked like jumbles of trees and branches. I also liked the 4 pink paintings on the 2nd book. Thank you for sharing and for encouraging us to be leas fearful of creating. Have a great weekend!

I love your giant sketchbook!! And while I like the idea, I am still trying to get used to using A5 sketchbooks, which is like a third of the size??? Lol! Maybe I can work my way up. Also, love the window view of your working in your studio. Tell Grady good job. :) And, I used to be more scared of messing up my sketchbooks. I am better at it now. :) I can’t believe how quickly you go through your sketchbooks too! After listening to your podcast with Melanie (or maybe your episode?) on Authentic Obsessions finally and have started using my little sketchbooks when I’m cooking or just beside me on my desk at work when I need a break. And, I’ve already filled 7 pages in 4 days, which is a lot for me, even in a smaller sketchbook. :)
Way to go!!! It’s interesting how once you get in a flow it’s easier to do a page! Thank you for listening and watching!! And big isn’t for everyone!!! That’s for sure!
A great tip for a beginner is to buy A6 sketchbooks,because you can doodle around and if you want to do a more serious painting,you don't have to worry about filling the page and wasting paper or time,because its no big page..and it fits in every pocket☺👍🏻

When tour brush was moving around 15:01 it almost created a gravitational pull towards my studio to get into my paint! Loved the mini sketchbook tour and the Mary study :)

I'm glad you said what you did about copying because, uh, I, uh, sorta painted your cat Finn. I felt bad about it, and I was a bit scared to mention it, but I just loved the color contrast and patterns, and he made me do it. So.... yeah. I confess. I painted your cat. Yep.

I'm hooked on your videos. I notice you appear to use chinese brushes, please do a dedicated video on these and where you source them. I'd like to try them but don't want brushes that fall apart.

I too have a bit of a fear of a new sketch book to get over this I don't start on the first page. I tell myself I will keep this page for some thing really good! This week by accident I worked upside down and on the back pages! Having broken the ice in my new precious book anything goes! Ha ha!!
I know - the RED! Every time I paint with my inks I wonder why I don’t use them more - they’re so delightful to use!

Sandi,you are so right.I have three art boards Here looking at me and I keep moving them around,think one day soon I’ll use them.The thing I think I go through with my sketch books is,in my mind I feel I should be working towards the finished product,that could be a throw back to when Art was my job and time counted ,so it’s a mould I have to break as really whatever time we spend on our Art isn’t wasted.Thanks again for another terrific video.x

I really need to check out Mary Fedden and her work, you've inspired me! I'm so surprised to hear she wasn't into using so much color, when I, like you thought her work made me think "COLOR!" and playfulness, but I guess it's just the playfulness, haha!

OH My, this episode made me squeal out loud, Im a massive fan of Mary, Im so lucky to of seen alot of her work in person, as a friend collected it , I need to email you, or adopt you as my sister, lol xxx ( both ? ) lol
I love mixed media. I use it as a way to add different textures, but also just because I'm a messy person and my art tends to be messy lol I'm really wanting a big sketchbook, your influence I guess haha. Shame they're so expensive where I live. Great vlog and great work as always Sandi!!!

Haha I hesitated to use my A3 sketchbook, I feel called out! JK! I finally used it last night with those kid tempura sticks your friend/fan got you and had so much fun! Both were worth the investment. Also, I really like the intro of this video of you opening the window, that was a reallly cool shot.

I've had my A3 sketchbook for 6 years (I know exactly because I got it for my 30th birthday) and I think I've only filled about 5 spreads in it!

Go gettum Suzanne! It’s only paint and it’s perfectly normal to have bad paintings in a sketchbook- I would be suspicious if there weren’t bad ones mixed with the good.
I had no idea moleskine made an a3 watercolor book and looked it up...I bought one right away. This looks like my kind of book for gouache practice. Each page could do one big work or 2-3 smaller ones, or even more thumbnails. It looks amazing. Was yours a watercolor book or a sketchbook? that might be why you got the bleed.

Thank you for the extended version! Wanted to also share some thoughts on copying work. My painting teacher has me directly copy other artists work, dead or alive. It's an effective way to learn 'how they did that'. If it's a contemporary artist, NEVER sell. If it's a long dead artist...sell that s#!% Sister! It's your rendition of a master. After Van Gogh. After Mary Cassett. After Picasso... should be part of the title. You may be copying, but it's fair use after so many years and ultimately you produced the product. Think of how many different renditions of the Mona Lisa you've seen on Tshits and such. As artists we can be a little too careful in what we explore believing everything we make needs to be so original. You just can't copy then say it's YOUR original. When in practice & play it's really good and even fun to copy. Like when we were kids. It's how we got good. :)

Love the advice about the sketchbook but what’s your advice when doing a piece that you’re going to sell? I have been staring at a blank canvas for days now lol.
Just jump in! It’s just paint and you can always paint over it!!!!
Do you like the moleskine paper or stillman and birn paper better? I know stillman and birn doesn't come in that big of a size so that's a bummer. I started using moleskine when I first started painting and then switched to the different series' within the stillman and birn range because I felt like they handled better for the price compared to the moleskine..interested in what your take is! Great video as always 😊👍
They are just different- it’s just hard to say really. I like to change things up so I like that they are so different. I think you can’t go wrong with either of them. I feel like that was ZERO help 😒
