That was just nonsense 😂 To be honest the US is a bit delusional sometimes when it comes to the US national mens team. Whenever they have a couple of super talented players that are important to their club they think they have a chance. While there are are countries that have a full 11 and bench of players that are amongst the best player in the world for their position. Of course there is always a chance to win but this is a lot smaller than those teams. The reality is that it will always feel like you have a team that is almost there if you always depend on a few good players. I'm Dutch, and almost all of our players play in big teams but we feel we have a weak team because not many of those have the quality to carry a team or are considered among the best in the world for their respective position. Just as the USA we are just a team with some important players and some talents who might develop into important players, which will then have to play with other talents while never reaching the quality of a full team of stars

He's right - and it is quite interesting - that even though the numbers aren't quite there yet, it feels like we're #3 now. I think that has a lot to do with fan culture and passion for the sport. I know people that go to MLB games all the time. For much of the game, they're just chatting and only seem to be going to have something to do. Even when I watch games with them on TV, they don't really get fired up like people who are in love with the sport. I'm not saying there are no people with passion like that for baseball, but that kind of passion is so common in soccer/football that that the sport and the culture can't be separated. The intensity of this sport has always been palpable for those of us who live and breath the game, but in the US, it used to feel like we were anomalies in the world of sports. So quickly in the last few years, it's gone from that feeling to one where you're like, "yeah, now everyone knows who we are and what we're all about." I love it.
Right, no one here really cares about baseball except for the diehard fans. The game is fun to attend as an outing but not the game really. Baseball on TV is boring af. NHL has a lower celling for sure outside the midwest and northeast. I think football can definitely rise to third in the US with time.
Well MLB is actually the second sport now and NBA is third. Look at the revenues and total attendance. Its grown by 20+ percent in the last 3 years. Keep in mind the NBA and NFL made hundreds of changes to the game to make it more exciting. The MLB is now just beginning to make some changes to the game after decades of no changes.
@@IMP3TIGOI mean you can say the same thing about soccer. No one in USA cares except the diehards, except there’s way more diehard baseball fans in USA than soccer.
Baseball fans have a ton of passion. You can’t expect them to be fully invested in every game, after all it’s a very affordable sport to attend, that’s going to bring casual fans and people who just want to enjoy the game. Baseball has a lot of passionate fans and also does a good job at bringing in casual audiences to the ballpark. I think with MLS, people in America don’t care enough to actually go to the games casually. You go because you really support the team and are a fan, for example I dont follow mls, most people I know don’t follow mls and I don’t know many people who have gone to mls games casually like they do for other sports here. Out of the few that I’ve seen attend mls games, they are true fans of the team/sport. Which is something that I think only hockey can relate with. Football, basketball, baseball are all sports in the USA that are consumed by casual fans as well as diehards. MLS and NHL seem to have less of that casual crowd though. However, I follow European soccer. Idk if mls will ever grow to #3 just because the level of play is not comparable to Europe.
Messi is the GOAT, but it took/takes someone like a Messi to popularize the world's biggest sport in this country. We have so many great US soccer team(Men and Women) members and former members. It should have happened long ago, it should be the #1 sport
How on earth did you get this man? Your introductions are amazing, I love this channel US football is going to attract Americans that want that genuine tribal festival feeling A wonderful listen. True optimism well explained as in the moment we need a loving responce with a positive outlook.

oh, Matt, you just nailed the US situation on Futbol situation. US knows the notes but didn't figure out the poetry/music of the Futbol. So my humble interpretation to what you just said is: US needs to have a much bigger melting pot of amateur futbolers and coaches (those are the ones who in my beloved country of Argentina end up writing the poetry/music of the Futbol). Worldwide Futbol cultures are built strongly within the transition between Amateurism and Professionalism.
11:37 Excellent observation about USA national soccer teams. I watched them do so many right things that bad teams can't and should do to get better, but there's an emotinal or aesthetic component still missing. When Brazil or Argentina teams are playing bad is usually because they're not doing something that USA teams almost always achieve. But when they do, they are great. (also helps having Maradona, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho or Messi)
The apple deal, leagues cup and messi going the team that needed it most made the difference. The Miami branding is also so well done and visually unique it helps define that mls is no longer trying to imitate but be it's own thing
Love this! Also no one is acknowledging the amazingness of a line like “..showing up in a finely tailored green suit, of which I am very jealous, looking like the Riddler after a juice cleanse” so I will. 👏😂❤
The difference between the USA and many candidate countries for the World Cup is that children not only play soccer in their training sessions and official matches, it is a way of life, like basketball in the USA.

Such an NPC comment no offense. The draft system in American sports make the leagues far more exciting and competitive and even footed than European leagues where only a few rich teams dominate and the league's effectively rigged. In American sport system, the richest teams almost never are the most successful teams because having more money doesn't mean they can buy better players.

Hearing Americans talk about football is always so innocent. Imagine what would happen if a player on the top of his level would go over there during his career. All they get is the best of the last-last generation and they are still so happy to see someone like Messi play.
Soccer isn't in third (but it's a good average). It's 'FIFTH' to multi-generational Americans. However, Fútbol is 'FIRST' to first and second generation Americans.
It's actually the 4th most popular overall. Soccer popularity is split amongst many leagues. NHL captures the entire hockey market. It's the second or third sport amongst youth. It's the only major sport in the US that's seriously growing.
Not even close to the 3rd sport when broadcasts cut away from a soccer final for a commercial, nascar, womens softball or golf! When that stops we can come back to this discussion. With no pro/rel MLS will continue to be the novelty it is.
Interested comment about the notes: Soccer has a big cultural component. Anyone know the notes, but the culture is what makes music. Cheers from Argentina.

I like this format. Concise, graphic, to the point. Nice.
what a delightful interview! love that these type of soulful people are our owners in MLS
Messi is the GOAT, but it took/takes someone like a Messi to popularize the world's biggest sport in this country. We have so many great US soccer team(Men and Women) members and former members. It should have happened long ago, it should be the #1 sport
Such a cool, well-spoken guy Mathew. Great interview and great questions also.
Matthew is a ray of sunshine. I've followed US soccer since 1993 and I'm still amazed at how far it's come.
Nice conversation!!! Anybody happens to know what glasses Mr. McConaughey is wearing?
what a nice interview!
How on earth did you get this man?
Your introductions are amazing,
I love this channel
US football is going to attract Americans that want that genuine tribal festival feeling
A wonderful listen.
True optimism well explained as in the moment we need a loving responce with a positive outlook.
Messi + Suarez looked amazing for Miami the other week! The football was brilliant to watch.
Oh, so nice to see the Shakhtar Donets'k logo behind the interviewer
Hello to you (and the marvelous Matthew) from Kharkiv, Ukraine!
Football i'snt just a sport, its a great part of European life last 100+ years
US National team knowing the notes but not the poetry is actually the most perfect analogy I’ve ever heard. We’re close but we need that cohesion and flow in-match
Oh... we've seen Rog in Austin!
What a great interview. Loved watching you two vibe.
Yo seguia a la MLS cuando Guillermo Barros Scheletto fue al Columbus Crew ( despues de dejar Boca Juniors ) y ahora veo Inter Miami por Messi
A deep fried turkey leg, Oreo and a kiss from dearest Mathew
MESSI GOAT OF SPORTS.
No the GOAT of football is Pele.
When Pele came to the USA, the popularity of football was even higher.
Pele played in the MLS and Messi too and in the same MLS they say that Messi is the GOAT, sorry. 💀@@patrickhauser588
Messi >>>> pele Everybody knows@@patrickhauser588
Messi is better than pele, sorry@@patrickhauser588
@@patrickhauser588Stop ths cap, pele played in like 1638.
He gives me hope too
power of appreciation. It changes the world.
He should've played the rival team manager in Ted Lasso.
The music playing by the crowd at 2:49 is also from Argentina.
We intentionally used south and Central America as an inspiration to create our own mixture for our club
@@ariessilva I didn’t notice.
Alright, Alright, Alright. I just love this man 🖤
Matthew is such an awesome guy n such a cool n likeable person.
And that Fortaleza Shield on the wall, love it !
lol comentei a mesma coisa
oh, Matt, you just nailed the US situation on Futbol situation.
Messi, Messi, Messi ❤❤❤
Football is not simply a sport but rather a culture that connect people all around the world...
Messi
This chat is incredible!
I rather have actors, musicians and former athletes as owners than out of touch billionaires.
More passion. I got you.
I agree
As Shakhtar fan, I'm so happy so see our pennant there. I have exactly the same one in my room. Must be Kryvtsov gift or something. Cheers!
The MLS is only getting better
New talented kids arriving
Looking forward to it
Lol hahahaa mls is a joke

HOW. winning these made up leagues cup etc.. til i see mls teams going down to south america n beating teams in argentina. I dont even see them beating teams in paraguay or bolivia. U guys barely beat teams in central american countries.
The song amd notes the MlS and US football is the relegation notes.
If they had a two three tier system, and the real jepordy that comes with promotion scraps and relegation battles.
It needs more stakes in the whole formatt. i
Such an NPC comment no offense. The draft system in American sports make the leagues far more exciting and competitive and even footed than European leagues where only a few rich teams dominate and the league's effectively rigged. In American sport system, the richest teams almost never are the most successful teams because having more money doesn't mean they can buy better players.
@@Pol-xu4on what brother you do know the draft systems makes your bottom half of the table play worse and less competetive to get better drafts real good stuff there for sure haha
I had never seen your channel before and now I’m hooked. This interview was fantastic - always amazing watching 2 poets in action
Two of my very favorite personalities and purveyors of wisdom.
Bro, soccer is everything period.
I wish we could get some of this passion and energy up at FC "Frisco" but I digress.
De nada, amigos.
It’s first among immigrants and probably third among the youth.
It's actually the 4th most popular overall. Soccer popularity is split amongst many leagues. NHL captures the entire hockey market. It's the second or third sport amongst youth. It's the only major sport in the US that's seriously growing.
I'm pretty sure cornhole is more popular in that country. Americans don't have the attention span for football.
@@alanduncan1980 Well you’d be wrong
Hahaha I love that you know what cornhole is. 😂 but seriously a ton of us do love football/soccer/fútbol/fulbo;) very very much.
Not even close to the 3rd sport when broadcasts cut away from a soccer final for a commercial, nascar, womens softball or golf! When that stops we can come back to this discussion. With no pro/rel MLS will continue to be the novelty it is.
They should get Neymar before Inter Miami makes the ultimate flashback team
it comes with time .. some of the clubs in the UK are over 100 years old LOL
as long as the community is with you.. you are on the right path.
Interested comment about the notes: Soccer has a big cultural component. Anyone know the notes, but the culture is what makes music. Cheers from Argentina.
DUDE AMERICA IS A SMALL COUNTRY, SOCCER HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE MOST DOMINANT POPULAR & BEST GLOBAL SPORT IN HISTORY , it is not about what us people say about football, they lag behind, but if you count from back to front off course football is 3rd, but if you count from front to back American sports are nowhere to be found
Matt McConaughey ia a cool guy and a great actor
Dear Americans, you must understand that: soccer is a passion, a feeling, it is much more than a sport; that is felt from the playing field to the stands and the fans... Maybe that is the "poetry" that good old Matt is referring to... Greetings from Argentina
I’m from the Netherlands, I did 1 year of my masters in Austin. I must admit I was surprised at how “developed” the city is, but let’s press the breaks for a little bit! They’re making it sound like it’s Amsterdam, Sinapore, NY I feel like there’s levels to this and Austin is definitely not there yet…
What do you mean by developed?
You are Verde, i am Verde, Listos? XD had me dzing this one haha
This is probably the best interviewer I've ever seen.
Fantastic, thanks
Will be the number one.
The only way it will become number one is if you can convince the kids in the inner city to play Soccer instead of basketball or football.
@@loganleroy8622There's already plenty of that. Especially in the southwest.
every time i hear matthew talk, i always think of that scene in wolf of wall street with Leo at that restaurant😂
That’s the opening chant for our team!
I always think of “man you got a joint, be a lot cooler if you did” or “alright, alright, alright”. Dazed and confused was his first acting gig i think and damn that man dropped so many good sayings some of those had to of been him ad-libbing!
As someone who lives in America, it is definitely NOT the 3rd sport. It's barely top 5
But its the only real sport in north america.
Is that Matthew Maccgdhdgy?
When the first genius of the beautiful game made in America will appear… then you will all have the poetry.
(“Football is a language with its poets and its prose writers” said Pier Paolo Pasolini.)
Great video! Just as Seattle did a Hendrix kit, Austin should do a Stevie ray kit
Love the Kith fleece, Rog!
12:02 I think we don’t have the right composer
As far as I knew, the 3 most popular sports in US were American Football, Baseball, and Basket. Which one is soccer replacing as the 3rd?
I think Matt got confused it's not replacing any of the top three, but is replacing hockey (NHL)
It's already 4th. They expect it to replace baseball within a decade.
@@QuantumNoirlol. Baseball is second now in terms of viewership and revenue to the NBA. So mls will have to beat the NBA. And MLB is just not making changes to the game in decades to make it more exciting. NBA and NFL made hundreds of changes in the last few decades for that purpose. If anything I see the big 3 and hockey growing further apart from the MLS. Also MLB and NBA are international sports. US MLS soccer is not. You have a few argentine fans watching messi in the US and he's about to retire. People will watch the premiere league etc before they even watch mls
Did he just say round football? 😂
So, looks like I just found the MLS team to support. Since Palmeiras is known as "Verdão" to us, I think it's only fitting.
"we can pause at the exact moment his mind gets blown 12:03 🤯🤣
We need Woody Harrelson on bass though 🎸

The only way to bring Messi anywhere is to convince him his family is going to be living a better life. He’s a family man through and through.
