In 1989 I was living in Ely, and working as a mining engineer for a gold mine halfway between Ely and Eureka, 75 miles from town (Alligator Ridge Mine). I drove up that dirt road one weekend, and stopped to look at that bus on the hillside. A family was living there then, and the man of the house came out and asked me what I was doing. I pointed up at the bus, and said I was just wondering how that bus got up there. He told me that they used either a front-end loader, or a dozer to haul it up there (I can't remember which). He didn't seem inclined to talk, so I just left shortly afterward.
wow
didn't they still have like 3 Brothel's there in Ely ~ including one named Green Lantern?
@@greenmanalishi6086 Don't remember that name but they had at least two there when I drove through on my way to the solar eclipse in 17.
@@greenmanalishi6086 They did back then, but probably not now. I imagine this pandemic put the kibosh on all brothel trade in Nevada for some time to come, maybe forever. I will tell you about my only interaction with a brothel employee though. Back then, Ely had commercial airline service, thanks to a federal grant which helped small communities all over the west get airline service. Ely was provided with service by a company called SkyWest - known locally as “ScareWest.”, my wife and I were waiting at the airport for a flight to Denver, connecting via Salt Lake and a transfer there to Southwest Airlines. We were talking with an attractive young lady who at some point in the conversation let us know that she was a worker at one of the brothels in town. Didn’t bother or faze either of us - it’s an honest trade, and they work hard for their money. A short while later an older fellow (45ish) joined us waiting for the flight. At some point he realized that she was a (gasp!) prostitute, and blurted out, “You mean to say you work there??” - referring to one of the brothels that was mentioned. I looked at him with a look that indicated “Open mouth, insert foot.” She clammed up immediately, and just sat there with her head down. After we deplaned in Salt Lake, she immediately got her luggage and left, either to a connecting flight or to a rental car or bus, if SLC was her final destination. I never saw her again. Now, as to why SkyWest was called ScareWest by locals - at the end of 1988 Kennecott flew me and my wife to Ely from Denver for a house-hunting trip. It was December, and when we landed in Ely, the runway was pure ice. Our plane, a twin turboprop holding about 10 people (though only four of us were on the flight besides the pilot and co-pilot), slid off the end of the runway and the front wheel assembly landed in the ditch at the end of the runway. It had happened before, more than once. They had to pull the plane out with a tractor the next morning. No one was hurt, and we were only going about two or three miles per hour when it happened. Ely, at a high elevation to start with, is at the bottom of a ravine coming from Ruth, and all the cold air in winter comes right down it and settles in Ely. The town often has the coldest temperature in the continental U.S., often minus 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
@@greenmanalishi6086 They still have 2 brothels (Big Four and the stardust), and a sketchy Asian Massage parlor, all on the western side of town, in a designated red light district. (like block 16 used to be in downtown Las Vegas). The green Lantern burned down and closed accordingly in the early mid eighties. I was talking to an old local one day who used to be a part owner. He told me some stories, all I really remember is him chuckling about "a five dollar piece of ass".
From the discarded Amazon boxes, I'd say that package thieves are using that location to open their loot.
I think your right,
That was my first thought when I saw that near new box.
Somebody might be sleeping there?
That was my thoughts too
Russian leather thing is a strop for sharpening straight razors Very cool!
simply search novgorod strop 53 and you will find it.
Yes, it says so on it...
I cant make out the first word on the shaving belt. The rest says "...belt for a sharp razor". At the bottom it says Neznenovgorad. A famous Russian city. The first wave of Russian immigrants came in the 1990s after the fall of the Soviet Union.
@@asherdog9248 Very cool you looked it up!
I was going to say razor strap. My dad had one but I couldn't figure out how leather would sharpen a razor.
that pile of batteries are worth $5-10 each for scrap. at 23:30 obvious mine tailings in the background. the green stones are copper ore. high grade too!
I remember in Mexico in the 90’s coming across the green stones as you did. One of the guys in our group made us haul all of them out hiking in 120F temps. I still have some.
Yup, looked like some nice copper ore
Dairyland insurance..
Someone needs to rescue that Pontiac!
Lots of good parts on that beauty!
For real. The tail light lenses would probably fetch $100 each from someone looking to restore that model of Catalina.
dairyland insurance was high risk insurance for those with a not so good record of driving
@@erniew5805 They also insured motorcycles/motorcyclists
Some of the best storytelling you will ever find on YT by someone just poking around an abandoned place where people
onced lived. What a fantastic imagination WH has!
I love how inventive you are! What a story-teller! You can make up several stories about who the people were what their character was like and how they interact with one another and what may have happened to make the place abandoned… You’re so entertaining, Wonderhussy!
Hi Sarah, that's a 1960 Pontiac Catalina. I remember because my parents had one back in the day. Great adventure!
I’ve come to realize Wonderhussy has one of the best if not THE BEST adventure type channels on YT. She definitely is the cutest and does the best at narrating.
I really enjoyed this exploration. That old Pontiac was the real treat!! 😍
Sarah Jane I think it was a hippie slash religious settlement, that did some mining . LOL This video has the look and sound of your earlier works but better. Thanks for sharing your exploration in the middle of nowhere Nevada.
PLEASE PUT GLOVES ON!!!! You're too precious to catch anything from rat droppings. 🙏😍
i was thinking the same thing, and also a mask would be nice too, places like this have too much mold and dust sitting for ages, could be dangerous to inhale....
Seeing those abandoned houses make me feel really sad 😞 just thinking about the people who once lived there.Makes me think and wondered what happened to them, how come they move out, etc, etc.
What a neat community that you could write a fiction book about from all the clues. Great video.
Wish you had opened the hood on that early '60's Poncho.
389 Cu In. Thanks for keeping the music very low. Perfect. Not one word of Graffiti or anything there! Strange.
not a 59, 61 went to the split grill
Its fun to dig around and explore these old places with ya, and I always look forward to what your theory is going to be on the history of the people and place. Can always count on being entertained with your detective skills.
That Pontiac Catalina looks just like my dad's 1959 Catalina. Same color blue. Hmm, I have wondered where it went!
the storytelling of the theories are something hahaha love it
The first thing you ran across is the compressor out of a refrigerator to keep a cold
The leather looks like a Barber's leather strop, for sharpening a razor.
Its not like they had a Walmart back in the day or disposable razors ...at least the men were attempting to be presentable
My father used his razor strop daily to sharpen his straight razor. He occasionally had to use it on our backsides if we got out of line...ouch!
@@ronaldrogers106 Yep I remember those days we used to hide under the beds lol
I think it is a strop. I have one, but can’t get the knack of sharpening anything on it.
If the inscription is Russian, I’ll have a translation soon.
Of the first two houses, the lower one had asbestos wall shingles, as did the church. That might help to date those buildings. The interior light on the school bus was fueled by propane.
The doors and closet in the first house date it from between the late 1800s to the 1920s. The piece of linoleum in the last building is from the '20s. In the first house where she wondered why there was that bricked area with a chimney hole, I would say that was originally the kitchen and the stove was in that area.
That leather strap, written in Russian is an old straight razor strap, used to smooth the blades ....they were clipped to arm of barber chairs with that hole at the top....
Be careful in those old places, all the mouse poop carries Hanta Virus, I’m from Colorado and it’s something we are always aware of...be careful
Your theories are humorous great explore fun fun fun :)
Love it when you show us these old houses.thankyou.
Glad to see you back to doing more abandoned buildings videos. So fun to hear your commentary during your hardcore explorations.
Agreed.. She may have gotten a little Leary after some woman jumping her ass on one of her videos about keep out signs. Woman claimed it was her property WH was on.
I live in Fla where there is not that much empty space to look around on. Wandering around what you think is open could get you shot here, Guess thats why this is interesting to me. Not to mention looking at WH isn't so bad on the eyes either.
the Pontiac Catalina looks like my 1960 model that I had around 1969...
14:25 Looks like copper ore - a sulfide of copper, or perhaps a chalcopyrite. Must have been an intergenerational Mormon sisterwives colony. Or maybe some crusty old miners plus the two mechanic brothers and one's card-writing wife. Pretty interesting old digs.
Amazon porch pirate hideaway!
🍿💥 Anything with Bus and Ghost Town 🤩 is great adventure!! Yayyyy
Can you imagine if you peaked and one of those old houses and someone was sleeping in there yikes .....
Commentary is priceless..
Another Wonderhussy yarn.😀 Love these tales you concoct as you explore. Stay safe Sarah.😎
I've actually seen this video around when it came out, but auto-play brought me to it again. Just wanted to add that I had some of those black velvet type marker art stuff in the 70s, but my kids also had them around 2005-2010
And so are the days of our lives....You are a brave girl exploring out there by yourself. I give you much props and respect. You're like a superhero you even have your theme name and song. Add it to the resume. 🌷
Another great story out of Wonderhussy's mind!!! Don't you just love it!!!! Take Care and Stay Safe Wonderhussy!!!!!!
There's a fine line between love and creepiness. One of life's great altruisms.
Wear rubber gloves girl!! don't want to spread the haunta virus up your nose!! Stay safe!!
I noticed asbestos siding too
I know...all I can do is count the rat droppings.
I laughed when after picking up all those papers in rat droppings Sarah sees something in the next room or house was it and say's "Oh Gross". Gross was picking through those droppings Wonderhussy.
12:00 MANSON FAMILY VALUES !!!
I love it when you show us car guys this stuff. thankyou Sara!
Absolutely love your story of life in the abandoned buildings ❤️👍
The Pontiac Catalina is a full-size automobile produced by Pontiac from 1950 to 1981. Initially, the name was a trim line on hardtop body styles, first appearing in the 1950 Chieftain Eight and DeLuxe Eight lines. In 1959, it became a separate model as the "entry-level" full-size Pontiac.
It would be fun to restore it and take it on the boat to Avalon!
You really like the video INTO THE WILD. You mention it every time you see an old bus.
a compelling story
Some of the colors you found here WH were beautiful; like that green stone, that school bus and the car behind it. Wonderful
Great adventure. You are truly a free spirit. Thanks for posting. 👍👍👍👍👍
Wait what's this?? Another fabulous adventure!! Yay!
That bus was a kitchen, that's where Paul's crazy girlfriend , cooked her meth! And that's where she wrote her I love you cards. 🤣
That’s why his Crazy Girlfriend lived a full life with all of that love in her heart, passing at 35!
Wouldn't it still have that nasty chemical smell if they cooked meth??
Heisenberg!
Looks more like someone was recently remodeling that house, rather than abandoned long ago. Strange.
How do you figure?
@@daleleibfried8648 "Recent" being a relative term, I agree someone at some point was trying to remodel it. If you were going to remodel a bathroom for instance, you would take everything out, replace flooring, tile walls and then put the fixtures back. No other reason to move everything. There were areas where new insulation had been installed too. My guess would be someone leased the mine, started to fix up the house and either lost the lease or the mine wasn't worth working so they left it.
Remodels of previous remodeling, yikes!!
I've sung in numerous choirs so I'm super familiar with Hal Leonard Corporation. Where my choir geeks at, lol
great explore Hussey, you are back to your roots !
1000 thumbs up!! Thanks for the video!
Massive cool content Sarah!
Hey “Wonderhussy “ Back to the basics eh? Cool mate. I’m down with that. Love your abandoned buildings exploration vids.Especially your fun history theory stories. Yes indeed, more please.👍❤️🇦🇺😁🤪☮️
I have only just come across wonderhussy in the last 10 day as I love Vegas and clicked in Sarah's video. Wow these videos are addictive, what a personality. Great viewing, great gal. A fascinating life, fascinating adventures. This video is a great example. I wonder if that bus was an old movie or TV canteen.
6:25 "I dunno...it's a fine line between love and creepiness."
Good one.
cool video Ms. Hussy! Love watching 😍👍
Love how you explore and narrate what you think happened in the past. Thank you for sharing this fun video. ~ Mary & Fred
You are amazing! You'd be a great mystery writer. I sure hope you never open a closet or freezer and find the remains of some one, yikes! But I think you'd say something else.
That green rock is copper ore
I suspect that the appliances/bathroom vanity & tub were never installed. A sad tale indeed.
I really wanted to check that place out on my last road trip but it was snowing! Thanks for the video! That is a really neat place
You had me at Psycho Girlfriend
Early Food Truck!! 😂 Nice Amy’s sweatshirt. 😊
this is why we all love the wonder hussy
I love the way you go into one of your story telling of love and hate take care and stay safe
Another great vid!
That Catalina is a FIND! It looks fully restorable! Fully restored it would be a very valuable classic.
The brown carpet in that house is the exact carpet we had in the majority of the house I grew up in. We moved in to the house in 1979. There were different colors of that same carpet in each bedroom, mine was blue.
Really nice find it has some history that we wont know, also nice Pontiac and school bus👍Just so you know those car battery's are worth a lot for scrap at least a couple 100.
@William Mulvaney true but just strange somebody dumped them
Im surprised Wonderhussey doesnt see more diamondbacks on these adventures.
I find this kind of program. You go somewhere and tell stories about it. It makes it much more interesting. More, please.
very very nice video - been watching long time
That Catalina looks to be about a 1960.
You sure get into some finds. Be careful, never no when the can hunters gonna show up.
That old school bus, now there’s a resto job for a future Partridge Family Bus for somebody I’d say. Those old Chevy Buses are damn rare today.
The bus was a 54 Ford
The strap is what barbers used to keep shaving racers sharp, the steering wheel on the car is highly sought after by builders of hot rods.
I love seeing another abandoned video 😁.
I think: the surrounding scenery is fantastico!
Hi Huss,
Love your channel. I started doing hot springs in 1969 so I am an antique. Hope I see you on the trail sometime. At Mammoth and Bishop spring and fall. Mid winter near Yuma And Holtville. Summers back to farm in MN. Fish Lake and Akali and Keoughs and Long Valley are all fun. Water is good, people you meet are better. Cheers Peter
Boy you sure can pick amazing places to make excellent videos
Dairyland was an auto-insurance company that specialized in new or high-risk drivers. Premiums were due on a monthly basis.
Some of that desert baked lumber is incredible. The things I could do with that.
Hi Sarah, I discovered your vlog a few years ago - you were doings videos like this, abandoned places. I love these ones, and the Donner Party series you did a while ago. I’m in England and I love learning stuff like this about the States. I’ve followed you for a while but these types are my favourites. I love your Vegas ones too. Have you any plans to make another mini series like the Donner party or Carol Lombards wedding ring?
Great video 👏👏👏
Excellent video loved it
Very interesting video Sarah, hope you had some very sturdy footwear !
She was wearing her Exploration Boots!
Parts of that Catalina are in such great shape. I'm sure there's collectors out there looking for those chrome pieces and light bezels for hundreds apiece.
Just drove by that us and remembered your video!had to rewatch to be sure❤
School bus
"I almost want to take it with me"... Steps on it as she's finishing her sentence 🤦✌️😂😅😂
Pretty creepy but thank you for! See you next time! Very interesting as well!😃❤👍
Great adventure with a tale to go with it. Like the video. Thanks!
That looks like an old religious compound with the bus there and the church. We love love love love you and your channel! It is good to be loved! LOL! Is that too many, or not enough? LOL! Don't want it to get creepy! LOL! Cool old town whatever it is. The bed in the bus would have been across the back of the bus between the rear door and the back of the cabinets. Looked like at least a full-size mattress would fit across the back and maybe a queen size. That was certainly an early conversion. Probably before they invented motorhomes. LOL! Man, that car looked very restorable, someone is going to see this and go get it. Thanks for sharing. Take care and God bless everyone. Love you all! David
How strange to see the newer Amazon boxes!!! Hmm.
Yeah that made me wonder
❤ Old cars used to have a year stamped in the tail light lens. Before they put the VIN# in the left corner of the windshield, they were on the drivers door posts.👍👍 The #53 strap looked like an old shaving razer strap.
Love the old rides!
Wow! Amazing so many abandoned places there in Nevada. Your musings about what and who lived there make me laugh! That old school building! So many things to see! Keep on keeping on!
Hello Super Cutie. I think the leather strap was from an old Barber shop. I think the Bus was a mobile Kitchen back when it ran. I also think someone was fixing up the old house with appliances all over the place but a big storm came through and caused the fire place to tilt forward and wasn't worth fixing anymore. I love your channel.
Rocks at 14:25 appear to be copper oxide bearing ore, perhaps chrysocolla?
Streaks of turquoise too.
Love ya Sara Jane Wonderhussy! Lover your style and your thoughts about everything!
Dude you are actually really funny. I hope I run into one day while exploring so you can fill me in on what happened 😂
Old mining town. look at the HUGE tailing piles of rock and dirt in the area behind the road. @24.30 old razor strop.
In the upper shed, I'm pretty sure that compressor base was from some sort of refrigerator.
