    Hello Adrian, like many others I really appreciate the work that you have put into your videos. I am a retiree and my original plan was to purchase XGRO. However I just purchased 500 shares of DFN. Thank you for the amazing find. I would like to invest another $10,000 and was wondering if you would suggest picking up more DFN or to follow one of the 5 portfolios. I am looking for a mix of growth and income over the long term. Would you make any adjustments to the portfolios as the video is 5 months old? Thank you again for all the hard work.

      Split Funds are Income monsters but they do have risks of missing dividends. It's important you understand that especially if you are dependent on the income as a retiree. For My personal portfolio, I won't have more than 20% of my money in Split funds. 15-20% is the sweet spot for me but this is a personal preference.
      I would suggest mixing in other high income funds which don't have the "NAV Threshold" Split funds have like Covered Call ETFs, or Real Estate.

    Hi Adrian,
    As a 28 y/o, I want to be able to attain FIRE.
    - In this case, it seems like the Cash Cow makes more sense but I also want my money to last so the Beaver seems very attractive as well. Which would you pick if you were me?
    - As of right now, I do not have 10k cash, how should we proceed when buying ETFs? Should we buy smaller amount of each ETFs? Or buy 1k$ of each ETFs, one at a time?
    - Note that on top of that initial amount, I'd like to put set up an automatic monthly transfer to buy more ETFs.
    - What happens if one of the ETFs starts being bad after a year or two. Would you recommend us some new ones then?
    Thanks!

    • @PassiveIncomeInvesting
      @PassiveIncomeInvesting  4 роки тому +4

      Hey man, first off just the fact that you have this goal makes you way ahead of the pack, so that's great.
      Now, If your goal is FIRE, than you need passive income and increase it over time so your passive income covers all your living expenses. I would go with the cash cow.
      In terms of what to buy and when, fees should factor in your decision when investing small amounts. My broker (TD) charges 9.99$ for every transaction. So if you have 1k let's say... its not worth buying 4 ETFs (250$ each) since that would cost you almost 40$ just in fees. Its best to spend the 1k on 1 ETF and next time you have another 1k, you continue with another ETF so its 9.99$ a pop.(of course this all depends on what your broker charges... some charge less than 9.99$...)
      In terms of safety and if "an ETF goes bad" this is not the way to think. You should have the mentality that the ETFs will go up and down with the stock market to a degree... but the income the ETFs provide usually stays the same or increases over time (especially the covered call ones). Just look at the distribution history year by year of ZWC or ZWS and you will see for yourself. The key for passive income investors is the distribution. That should be your main focus all the time. You don't really care about the stock price of the actual ETF. Your just buying and holding it forever.
      The non-sector specific ones tend to be less volatile like ZWC, ZWS ZWE, etc. These are the ones i would invest in first.
      Either way, ETFs are very , very safe , especially the ones in my list because the companies in them are mostly Blue chip stocks and are leaders in their industry.
      Starting with ZWC, S , E and G would be my suggestion to get coverage around the world and then slowly start integrating sector specific ones in, like Utilities, Real Estate, Tech etc. start with the sectors you understand best.
      Any other questions let me know!
      Good luck!

      Entirely up to you. If want to take the pure passive approach and simply want to re-invest the Dividends then yes you can enable the DRIP's so your $$ compounds over time. This is especially useful for a retirement account and if you don't need to use the $ at the present time.

    • @PassiveIncomeInvesting
      @PassiveIncomeInvesting  3 роки тому +3

      Hey dude, thanks for the kind words. If you are specifically saving for retirement (and you don't care about getting income now) then of course put them in your RRSP and turn on the DRIP. They will compound to the stars by the time you hit 65. Also, the higher your salary is, the more value contributing in an RRSP will have for a tax break in that year. Either way you should be contributing a min of 10%-15% of your after tax salary to an RRSP in my opinion as a general good practice.
      After you contribute 10-15% of your after tax salary to an RRSP, put the rest in the TFSA until it's maxed out. It's important you max out the TFSA before opening a regular (non-registered) cash account.
      The adv. of the TFSA is that all the dividends you make are tax free if the stock is listed on the Canadian stock market (like all the ones in this video). It does not matter if they have U.S. holding in them. As long as they are Canadian LISTED stocks your good. No tax on anything ever in TFSA unless the stocks are U.S. listed. In that case all dividends have a 15% tax taken off the top

    Adrian, why don't you choose to follow this approach instead of investing in individual stocks? Wouldn't these ETFs also hold the individual securities that you invest in?
    I saw your portfolio and you own something like Enbridge. Wouldn't Enbridge be included in one of these ETFs? What I'm trying to say is why not just invest in these ETFs instead of holding like 90 individual companies and then some ETFs on top of it? Is there a reason why you're holding individual securities when you can just own ETFs that you're mentioning here (obviously ignoring MER and everything)?

    • @PassiveIncomeInvesting
      @PassiveIncomeInvesting  4 роки тому +2

      Hi Michael, I hold a variety of stocks (Individual stocks, ETFs, Income Trusts and REITs etc.) in my portfolio. If i would have known what i know now, my portfolio would look a lot different and have a lot less individual stocks and more Covered Call ETFs. I am currently shifting my portfolio to this new strategy and will release a new video soon on my updated portfolio in full.
      In truth, i still like to look for individual companies to invest in which have good value and provide a dividend , so ill always have some individual stocks in my portfolio. But this video was made specifically to encourage newer investors so they can get started relatively safely and easily with the ETFs.
      Its the smaller to medium cap companies that wouldn't be included in these ETFs. Those are a lot riskier, but there's quite a few gems out there. That is why i no longer invest in the Big cap, blue chip individual stocks (Canadian) anymore. Its better just to buy ZWC. or ZWB etc. I will however, own some smaller cap stocks that never make it to those ETFs

    Why use the hedged funds (ZUE vs ZSP)? I think one goal of investing in another country is to get exposure to that economy and its currency. Why would you shield yourself from its currency? If the Canadian dollar tanks (compared to USD) I want my US stocks to skyrocket, not stay flat. The hedged funds would prevent that skyrocket. How do you choose fund provider? For example, BMO vs Vanguard (ZUE vs VSP)? While the MERs of ZUE and VSP are the same (0.09%), VSP has higher average daily volume which means higher liquidity and potentially smaller spreads

    • @PassiveIncomeInvesting
      @PassiveIncomeInvesting  3 роки тому +2

      Well , I never said one is better than the other . Hedged funds eliminate the added risk of currency fluctuations. The U.S. dollar can tank also ... you never know . So a hedged fund neutralizes this added variable . I like to invest in the companies in the fund and don’t want the currency to be a factor but this is my personal preference. I don’t own any index ETF’s personally . I’d rather own dividend and income focused funds , but that’s my personal style .

      Hi Dan, yes you can pro rate it . these sample portfolios are already diversified to a certain extent but you can always diversify more . My goal for this video was to help new investors start their journey . It’s really up to you how much to put where . You can always diversify more in sectors where you understand the business. Right now In terms of “value” the most undervalued sectors are definitely energy , financials and real estate . Good luck !

    I love this type of video! Do you have one that uses stuff from this year? I noticed that this one is about 2 years old! Or one that has more US focused funds since I can't find many of these on TD Ameritrade in the U.S.

    Great video. I have a question: I already have some investments in my TFSA/RRSP. My goal is to have passive income that I can spend. Should I be investing these outside of my TFSA/RRSP account?

    • @PassiveIncomeInvesting
      @PassiveIncomeInvesting  3 роки тому +2

      Ok so you mean you want to extract it from your account . You can do that in both the tfsa and cash but not the rrsp . But it doesn’t mean you can’t get passive income with the rrsp . The only difference is that it will have to stay within the account ...so you can’t spend it until much later at retirement

    HI Adrian, my wife and I are doing research in passive income via dividend-paying ETF's. Through which company did you buy these through (i.e. Wealthsimple, TD, etc..) and are you buying these through RRSPs, TFSAs or just as a separate portfolio?

    Adrian , these are good informational videos for neophytes and millennials , good on both cases ,as the more the merrier and investing rather than vacation experiences , forgotten in a year or so is a noble effort on your part to get at home basement dwellers involved in the real world. I don't doubt your veracity or your success in both your portfolio and endorsements , one suggestion , that cheap chipboard shelving stocked with someone's idea of design , figures , books never read , needs to go. Nothing wrong in spending and showing a modicum of taste along with your excellent , mostly sleep at night picks. I dispute Crypto picks however , l don't like Ponzi schemes , l question why you do

      I’m going away from individual stocks , like I always say , why own them individually and take on more risk and make less income ? Simply look in zwc or cdz and buy the stocks in those funds if you want Canadian dividend stocks individually
