I saw Jack on his solo tour this past year and it was possibly the best show I have ever seen. He gave so much of himself to the audience, completely unrelenting. And the lack of phones was a large part of why it was so great. It was the first concert in my adult life where everyone there was completely present and experiencing a moment with no distractions.

My opinion on phones at concerts is I'll take a few photos and film one song, usually a song that a band may not play very often. It's nice to record a moment in time but the idiots who spend the whole concert filming on a phone, I don't get it? One thing I must say is I'm so glad that there were people in the 80s who took the time & effort to film or record certain gigs though. For instance, my first Siouxsie and the banshees concert in 85 someone taped it along with the Cure the same year. These were gigs that helped shape my life so I am grateful somebody took the trouble to record these gigs. Anyway as I said, I record 1song now and that's it & I see no problem with that?

And also When I goto shows and I want to or able to grab a quick moment of a favorite song or a pic of a favorite artist , but when I see people with their brightness full blast like a nuclear isotope and staring at their phone instead of the show, recording full songs or half shows etc. i always try to tell them kindly in the guise of “do this so you don’t get in trouble” but to turn the brightness all the way down and for me bc I’m a taller I never hold my device if i ever record or take a pic never outside the outline silhouette of my body like arching my arms above my head with some large full brightness device shining back at people trying to watch a show. I always make friends with concert neighbors and it creates a communal atmosphere depending on the concert. But most people don’t follow those rules and are mostly oblivious to anything outside of their eyes affixed onto a screen that’s as brighter to their face in a dark room as it would be holding their flashlight to their face but yeah I agree I don’t like people getting lost in their devices at shows but I am all for the respectfully and strategic “less is more” if someone wants to get a quick flash-less pic or grab a favorite chorus in a tune that’s cool. But it’s all in respect and mindfulness.

He is , no doubt, the most committed and energetic about helping the whole scene, the whole " "business".These are the people who will be remembered 50 years from now.

The current culture of supposed "influencers" who lack experiential expertise and depth seem to be skewing the signal to noise ratio, muddying the digital waters. Dialog devolved to Din. I really admire Jack White's integrity to his principles and feel such artistic integrity serves to buttress his work, making it more meaningful. At least for me it does.

Great interview. I love the end when Jack talks about wanting to be a drummer. He is a really good drummer too. Great swing and feel. Some youtube video of him playing with John Paul Jones and Seasick Steve I think. All those drummers he mentioned are the ones I grew up listening to except for Gene Krupa. Carl Palmer playing Lucky Man is so tasteful and swings like he says. Stewart Copeland ..Ian Paice all had some really great recordings and could play live really well. The more I find out about John Bonham the more I realize he was a swing drummer too. Great story Robert Plant tells of Bonzo playing in Chicago in a club called the Burning Spear where they went to see one of the old Blues Masters Bobby Bland.Bonzo got up and played with them and he tells how he laid down a back beat that was way back and all the musicians looked at him and Bobby Bland had a big smile on his face. They were impressed with him and he said they got more credibility from that performance than a lot of other things.

25:20 Aerosmith is the one band that kept the 'Swing' in their music through the Eighties on. They have boogie and R&B and soul feels like no other similar band, it's extremely organic for them. Rare examples, when Ratt recorded "Way Cool Junior" I think they were borrowing some Aerosmith feel to break out of their GLAM generic 4/4 thud patterns.
It's almost like Rap music and Hip Hop was an antidote to the lack of rhythm in popular rock music.

But he usually dealt with a pissed off Bartender who wasn't in the mood to take cash out of the register to pay their royalty fees! He was threatened with physical harm. Bands like pearl jam have offered specific concerts on several dates of a tour, for sale on the CD.
Now, whether you can give away the rights to a copy of the songs with a concert ticket, technically that means concert goers own a license to any recorded copy of the song, does it not? Or just that performance?
