Haitians are rising up against the 1% and political elite

  • In Haiti, a widespread protest movement has called for an investigation into political corruption. The country’s elites have long benefitted from a broken system that enriches the wealthy and well-connected, while repressing the rest of the population. Meanwhile, foreign interference - particularly from France and the United States - has undermined the country’s democratic institution. Lou explains how everyday Haitians are rising up to reverse these destructive historical trends.

I live in Tijuana Mexico and a couple of years ago a big wave of Haitians came to the Tijuana border to try to cross to the US. I dont know why or who told Haitians that the US would let them in as refugees or that they would take care of them. But most of them did not cross the border. Fast forward now to a couple of years later and they got integrated into the city. They are hard working people and I have nothing but respect for them.

Thank you Rat5 .....give Haitians a little pay check they will work their butts off and leave you alone. The men are very family oriented and that's all they have been asking the Haitian government "we need work to feed our family" they have been making all kind of deals with the US-Canada-France (the main players) to receive disrespect in return.

The good thing about trump is he does disturb the UNs complacency and complicit bias with certain conglomerates and traditional abusive infrastructures. Not intentionally, but he does. He's a bull in a china shop. He is hitting g at everything but it does sonetimes break what needed breaking. The UN is one of those fat lazy cats that need dieting and reorganising with new purpose. It is a lazy, corrupt, ineffective, scrotum less mess. Only African leaders are tried in the Hague, while GW Bush gets to discover the painter within. And if the victims are white or Jewish, then, that person responsible may be tried. MBS is placed on a human rights council, the UN forces spread cholera with impunity, the UN forces are used as mini armies guarding the interests of the g20 states. They are filth.

@@Bill-zp2mt In 1825, France, with warships at the ready, demanded Haiti compensate France for its loss of slaves and its slave colony. In exchange for French recognition of Haiti as a sovereign republic, France demanded payment of 150 million francs. In addition to the payment, France required that Haiti discount its exported goods to them by 50%. In 1838, France agreed to reduce the debt to 90 million francs to be paid over a period of 30 years to compensate former plantation owners who had lost their property. The modern equivalent of $21 billion was paid from Haiti to France. In 2015, France forgave about US $77 million in a modern debt, unrelated to independence. In 2004, the Haitian government demanded that France repay Haiti for the millions of dollars paid between 1825 and 1947 as compensation for the slaves' freedom. In 2015, the French government rejected this plan and said that it would consider investing in the country.

      Bill
The conditions of the order of April 17, 1825 imposed by France to Haiti for the recognition of its independence included the payment of compensation of 150 million francs payable in 5 years to the fund deposits and consignations (a fund of state) on behalf of the former French settlers. Contrary to what is sometimes believed, this compensation was never requested by the former settlers who wanted to recover their domains but was first suggested by Pétion, president and founder of the Haitian Republic, in 1814, during his talks with Dauxion-Lavaysse, sent by the government of Louis Xviii to negotiate a return of Haiti under the French colonial regime. Indeed, article 38 of the Haitian constitution, which prohibited whites from owning real estate in Haiti, left the former settlers only one way to recover their properties: a large-scale military expedition to regain control of the colony "rebel". By granting them compensation for the loss of their properties (which were transmitted in French estates until 1825), Pétion wanted to "disarm" them by removing any pretext for the campaign they were conducting for the reconquest of the island. . The governments of the restoration, who wanted to see the trade of France with "Santo Domingo" get up and had removed for this reason in 1816, any prospect of reconquest, tried unsuccessfully to change the Haitian constitution and then rallied to the idea of compensation for former settlers. The indemnity was suitable for both parties as soon as France accepted the principle of the non-return of its settlers to Haiti. The payment of the indemnity was, for the same reasons, accepted by the successor of Pétion, Jean Pierre Boyer. However, the indemnity was fixed unilaterally by France when it imposed the order on the Government of Haiti.

Haiti was the first country in the world (1803) to outlaw slavery. And they provided arms and support for other slave states/countries to rebel with the only condition being that these countries also support liberation struggles around the world. Capitalism is slavery with slick terms and highly deceptive tactics. US capitalism was built by slavery in the 19th and 20th Centuries, and virtually all gains since were made through a modified form of exploitation/slavery (wage slavery.) In the Soviet Union they turned a vast agrarian and illiterate country into an industrial world power. They eliminated illiteracy, homelessness, and poverty, and threw back the Nazi war machine inflicting the majority of Nazi casualties (in WWII 7 out of 10 Nazis died in the USSR if I'm remembering correctly.) They emerged the worlds largest steel producer, they were the first in space, and they made progress in just a couple of decades that took the capitalist US more than a century to achieve.
Like Dr.Michael Parenti once said, 'the Soviet Union lifted millions out of poverty, educated, clothed, and fed children, while the US was still working 10 and 12 year olds 12-14 hours per day in mines, factories, and mills.'
