I am a81 year old Grandma in the school system. I have been one for 21 years. When I started we received a stipend of $3.15 per hour. We are now up to a whopping $4.00 an hour. All of the Grandmas and Grandpas are low income seniors. Since it is a stipend it does not count towards rent, gas and electric nor can we include it as income to purchase anything. This program is under the umbrella of Senior Corp. I also as do most of us receive food stamps. Up to 2 years ago I worked full time. I am down to 15 hours a week now. I love being with the children and my teachers. I can provide a much more relaxed role when I interact with them such as telling them stories about the old days when I was a kid. The teachers are on a much more "teaching" agenda. Sometimes we laugh and I get a little silly with them which is nice for them. All this to say that a lot of people out there earn those food stamps. That is my opinion anyway. My daughter had terminal cancer and she was denied SS even though she had worked for 20 years in the same nursing home . She died 6 months after the denial. Do I feel guilty for receiving the food stamps. Not for a minute. I don't think any of the politicians in Washington could live on what we seniors from the "Silent Generation" live on. Thanks for "listening." Thanks for all your advise
My opinion is that this viewer probably never had guidance about how to plan and buy groceries.
And for her to be brave enough to share her purchases with us is a big step in the right direction.
If she can see the numbers on a consistent basis, to see how much she can save, it will be a huge motivation.
Just simplifying and downgrading a little bit on snacks and the drinks would be helpful.
Best of luck going forward!!!
For people who like using the pod machine like Keurig to brew coffee, you can buy little reusable pods that you fill yourself and use those. Then buy cheap coffee to fill them with. Save tons of money that way but still have the convenience of a pod.
My Dad gifted me my mom's after her passing. They used it in their RV during the few years of traveling they got before she got sick. I got two years out of it before it gave out. My mom had several of the reusable pods, or I wouldn't have used it.
If you are not into very strong coffee u can reuse the pod. I’m a 1-2 cup of keurig a day. Same with hubby. Waste more with reg coffee makers got rid of it. And my hubby and I have different schedule. So always fresh coffee with a kuerig machine. $3 at the thrifty
Going to places like Grocery Outlet, Big lots, I have gotten them on clearance from $2.00 to $12.00 depending on the size I got decaffeinated K PODS Starbucks, for $ 5.00 for 32 pods, it takes time and patience to find these deals, if they have several I buy at least two if not three.
Tea kettle and a “Pour Over” drip brewer, use your favorite ground coffee, adjust amount to your taste.
I shop around for them but if I like a flavor I am 66 and can't go to Starbucks often so I try bogo at Publix and big lots use gift cards there I get from ibotta rolling rebate money and I order online if I find a flavor as I never would make me a cup when I did a pot cause I wasted it the individual flavors I love teas and cocoa and cider too. It's my Luxury item for living this long
I'm so thankful for people being brave enough to share their food storage & grocery bills will us so that we can all learn tips & tricks. Every single one of these grocery budget audits have taught me things. So thank you to those brave people & to Tawra & Mike. I really appreciate all of the work that goes on behind the scenes to teach us things. 🥰Blessings from South Australia💕🐨
This was the best audit yet. The guest was a typical American working family that needs help. I feel like most of the other guests were already doing fairly well before the audit and some of them were doing awesome. Thanks.
Totally agree. I loved this one because I too am in denial.
I appreciate her putting herself out there. I think we all have purchased food items for a treat because we think we deserve it. That said digging out of debt there's absolutely no room for all those. Ive been guilty too and these videos have helped expose some of my "little" treats as well. I really like these because they help me see where I myaelf need improvement and reiterate shopping sales only. Ive got to do this! Love the cook books.
Well said!
I like treats too so I buy them when they are on clearance with those big yellow stickers and I pop them in the freezer. So I have a few treats when I want them and I never pay full price.
Re Tawra’s gravy recipe: add some onion and garlic powder, plus a couple of splashes of soy sauce to make it better than just the bouillon, water, and cornstarch. It makes a much richer flavored gravy.
Romaine lettuce lasts much longer in the refrigerator than iceberg, has so much more nutritional value and it tastes better!!!
I don't find romaine lasts longer than iceberg unless I chop, wash, dry and toss it with lemon juice before bagging.
My mom always put a piece of paper towel in baggie or Tupperware to keep her lettuce longer it does help
My single mom used the crock-pot a lot to help her with cooking meals she had 10 meal rotation and we never ate out, she started the crockpot in the morning when she got home she would finish cooking up the rest and meal, for after school snack was popcorn , half apple with peanut, pretzels sticks or homemade trail mixes. That was all ready in snack bags which mom measured a 1/2 cups of popcorn, pretzels or homemade trail mixes. For lunch she used to make her own Lunchables for our school lunch’s we eat a lot of bologna in those and in sandwiches, we took thermoses with hot food in the winter months home made soup and few saltines crackers with raisins and refillable bottles for water and orange slices.
As we got older she had us help she would cook up hamburger meat divide it into portions then I got home from school I would take one of those hamburger portions put it in the crock-pot with taco seasoning and some re-fried beans then add little water turn it on to cook, then when mom got home she would cook tater tot’s, and prepare the burritos.
I love that your mom included you in the preparation of your meals and snacks. This is how we learn!
I'm loving this concept- watching them is waking me up!!! But I got to tell u I'm especially loving when u pop in recipes to make at home.
I like it alot 😊
Tawra, I just got five 18ct large eggs at Kroger for .99 each PLUs 12 extra large FREE with a Best Customer coupon. I am a widow but my son and his wife have four children so I snag these deals for them. They had Jimmy Dean bacon for 2.99, limit five. Kraft Mac and Cheese for .99. We are all having lunch tomorrow and, believe me, everything was bought on sale and they are taking those bargains home with them. PS: When I was in line to pay, there was a lady behind me who had on a shirt that said "NOT TODAY" on it. I cracked up, she cracked up and the cashier cracked up.
So funny! I just snagged the same deals with Kroger Digital coupons!
These are really helping me out, I'm so glad you started this series! My husband appreciated Mike's reaction to you being wrong about the lettuce!
My husband did too! 😂😂😂🙄
I grow my own blueberries. We have several bushes. They are easy to grow and look nice in the garden. We stock our freezer each year and give gallons away all at no cost!
When I worked outside the home before having kids, I would assemble everything in the crockpot as I would in the morning but do it the night before an put the ceramic part in the fridge. In the morning all you have to do is pull that insert out an turn crockpot on, and then dinner is waiting when you get home from work
Great idea
Another idea that I started doing when the weather is hot I start the
crackpot on low and cook all night then I keep it on warm the next day and the
kitchen doesn't get as hot.
These women are brave with these audits. I would be crying in fetal position after a schooling from Tawra. Lol. My hubby and I are old 58 and 60 but have been following Tawra like forever but still use her tips and advice. Kids all gone except one adult son renter remains who has Asperger’s .
Cook double meals, eat one for supper, freeze the second meal for a fast future meal.
I been buying Romaine my whole life and thought I was splurging or being "spoiled" cause all my friends I shopped with would look at the price and say "why don't you just buy Iceberg"? For me its bland and I end up buying and adding more stuff and dressing. Iceberg feels hollow in middle, less lettuce, and rusts quicker too so Its good to know I'm okay buying my Romaine!
Thank you for looking into our emotional eating and "treat yo self " spending in a loving way! Great Audit and new format for channel Love your recipe helper clips in these!
Try green leaf lettuce it's the best and great for burgers and sandwiches as well as salad
You can chop of bottom and regrow it butter lettuce too.
It will revive rinsed and put in a container or baggie with a paper towel and last longer so much better than iceberg in was wasting it too often when bought
Check the nutritional value of iceberg lettuce and compare with alternatives.. You will be surprised.
@@kathymellon3906 I love green leaf and buy that as well for sammies! I did not know you can chop and regrow it so thank you for sharing!
I think picking 1 "treat" would be a good baby step. Be it the $.99 raspberries, the gum, the olives, or ONE other thing. But pick just the one. Once she's gotten used to that, go down to only getting a "treat" once a month and so forth.
Oddly, I really enjoyed this video! Kuddos to the brave participants who come forward and being so vulnerable!
That's why I love pick up groceries...because the price is what it says. PLUS if they are out of stock on something, they often offer substitute of bigger package for the original price or a better brand for the original price. This is via Kroger, Fred Meyer near Seattle
We are a family of 3 and spend $300 a month and I have a huge huge stockpile bc I spend $300 a month regardless wether I need food or not bc I shop all the deals . I also do meat hauls twice a year for $500 so all in per year $4600
I hope this young lady takes some of your advice to heart. The $1-$5 impulse items she buys for “treats” adds up. From what I saw she could save up to $10/week alone if she cuts that out. Over a year that could mean a $500 payment towards debt.
Shrimp is cheaper than ground beef in PA. I buy all of it on sale but both ground beef and hot dogs have gotten crazy expensive here.
I use the slow cooking oven method from your Dining Gluten Free cookbook to cook roasts now. They are the bests roasts we’ve ever had!
I am stuck on a brand coffee because we can tell the difference. BUT I watch for big sales and stock up!
Ty for all these tips, I love learning all these little hints and tricks..I love saving in any way I can, I have to be very purposeful when I plan and shop. It makes a world of difference in my bill….
Albertsons also has reduced racks for meats, bread, veggies, etc. shop those first!
When you told her to stop using the Keurig cups I felt you were in my kitchen speaking right to me. I know I need to stop and with your cost break down I was motivated. Thank you. I don’t buy other drinks. It’s coffee; no cream,or water here so at least I don’t have sugary drinks or juices. But still!!
It's gonna be okay Doodle. You can get a couple of refillable silicone "Kcups" and still feel good about your coffee.
Yes. Yes. Yes. Wisdom for all of us. Thank you.
@@pamt3915I have those and they are great.
With the reusable pods, I think they are great for people who, like myself, only have one cup of coffee in the morning.
Thank you all for your advise. I do have a reusable pod, I just don’t like to clean it. How lazy of me!!
Don’t go food shopping when you’re hungry. You’re more likely to buy treats & convenient foods that you can start eating in the car.
Are there more vitamins in romaine lettuce than head lettuce? I always heard head lettuce was mostly water.
Romaine lettuce has more nutrients, even though it's mostly water. Think about spinach. It shrinks down so much when it's cooked because of the water content, but it's still a great source of micronutrients.
I'm surprised you didn't tell her to skip grocery shopping for a couple weeks and eat from freezer and pantry.
She doesn't have that much on hand.
I have 7 family members I make food for. I spend on food about 500 a month. I just got your first book for my birthday gift. I'm hoping to let this help me cut our food bill.
Also while I was shopping at Lidl yesterday I found pre-made biscuits for $1 a bag each bag had 20 biscuits. I got 8 bags! That saved me so much!
That is awesome!
Great deal and those are so good
Buy a tub plain yogurt on sale or discounted, add homemade jam or jelly or fresh in season fruit.
Only buy orange juice. My doctor told me I need it for my iron pills absorption. I have iron deficient anemia. It is expensive so I only drink enough to take my pill.
Same here, it is so hard for me to keep iron levels up.
You can also take a low dose vitamin c pill. All the oj I've gotten lately taste like it has some bad oranges in the mix. Yucky!
Just by frozen concentrate. It's way less expensive than the ready to pour.
@diannthomas7849 thank you. I am watching pennies like everyone else these days. I don't know why I didn't think to do frozen concentrate!
thanks for the recipe for pumpkin creamer. I never buy it because it's all junk with fats and too much sugar, and the cost is crazy. Can't wait to try this and will not add the sugar but will add stevia as I use it. may try with coconut milk, almond milk or oat milk instead.
If you committ to making your own yogurt, start looking for snapware or other smaller glass containers. They can vary in price each quite a bit from store to store and package to package. Then slowly begin a collection of individual portion containers good for yogurt, portioning apple sauce, and much more.
I make yogurt a couple times a month with my instant pot. I found some 8oz wide mouth mason jars with plastic lids. The recipe I use adds about 1/4 cup of sweetened condensed milk so it isnt as sour as plain.
Thanks for the concern 😁
Your so right!! Watch the sale prices,, well all of the prices!!!! almost every other trip, I get to ask that was wrong price, please fix it!!
You can make your own basic coffee creamer with 2 cups of milk, 1 can of sweetened condensed milk and 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract. Mix it well and it's not as sweet.
You dont need the sweetened condensed milk!!
Where is the real food. Non nutrition items. I agree mostly snack foods
There are times when buying for one or occasionally cook for 2 you have to rethink your menu and buying and I reached a point that I no longer like wasting so smaller hauls for fresh vegs and fruit and eat it before rebuying and use it the week it's bought or the next but soon when bought
What would you suggest we do with the rest of the pumpkin purée leftover from making the coffee creamer? Also, can extracts be used to make flavored creamers? I have your older Dining in a Dime and just bought the GFDF cookbook.
Freeze the rest of the pumpkin puree in ice cube trays. Then store in the freezer and take out what you need next time you make the coffee creamer.
Great Audit. 👍
I buy Romaine lettuce, they come in pairs in the UK, & are about 30p more than Icebergs, but, I plant the Romaine lettuce stumps in May, (the size you cut off,) 4 or 5 in a 12 inch pot by the backdoor, & have free Lettuce till the end of September. We just pull of the leaves in rotation, from the outside inwards. For a bit of extra colour I sprinkle Mixed Salad Leaves seeds between them. 1 pot is enough for the 2 of us.
TFS LOAD, take care & keep really busy everyone.❤🙂🐶
WOW! That ham she paid 5.00 a pound is a lot just for anyone who lives near a FoodLine grocery store I got these on sale for .99 a pound and I put them in my freezer and not long afterwards I saw them on sale again for the same price of .99 cent a pound and picked up some more and put in the freezer I Love FoodLine they have great sales helps me a lot and just in case you missed Twara’s video where she told you could freeze butter that tip is saving me a lot of money I now have stocked up when it’s on sale got about 10 boxes in freezer now got some at FoodLine and some at Ingles on sale. I have also started buying extra loaf bread and putting in freezer to save a extra trip for just bread and I get at Aldi’s for 1.29 and it is the best bread I love it. When I get it out of freezer taste just like it did before I froze it. Thanks to Twara and her tips I am saving in a lot of ways but still watching for more saving tips, it makes me feel so good and as prices keep rising it’s the only way a lot of people will continue to be able to eat half way descent meals. Good Luck everybody on your savings journey!
Tawra I have found romaine lettuce is cheaper than iceburg in my area AND romaine is higher in vitamin K, plus it tastes better.
My advice would be to really fill yourself up on a morning with bacon, sausage and eggs, you will be able to go all day without eating anything, eat dinner such as the ideas Tawra gave. If you need a snack, have some full fat Greek yogurt with some fruit. From a health perspective we shouldn’t be snacking, it’s really bad for us and most of the items are what I call non foods ie processed garbage so just aren’t necessary. Up your protein and good fats, you will save money and be so much healthier. Hope I’m not sounding mean but health is my passion. Good luck ❤❤❤
Loving the audits, Tawra! Also live shows w/Mom!!❤️❤️🥰
Great tips. I am really loving this new series. I think everyone should have their eyes opened to spending habits/rationals of their buying.
Also great advice to preplan for the next day’s meal. Coming home tired and having to come up with supper can be overwhelming.
Another great tip would be to cook double-eat one/freeze one. Then there is always something to pull out at night to thaw in the fridge and heat up the next day for those busy schedules.
We made an extra serving for dinner for dads lunch the next day.and took it out before it got to the table.
I agree with not putting food sitting out on surfaces...everything is stored...clutter makes me feel overwhelmed!
I needed to hear this. I have got some reorganization to do.
😊I must compliment you on your approach towards your guest. It is more fun ,in my opinion ,when you explain kindly😅. Nice job ❤
You can buy reusable k cups that you can fill with your own coffee.
I heard that Walmart has their own version of many name brand candies for way cheaper. Also, buying a few things in bulk (candies) from Sam's would go very far with leftovers.
It’s so good that folks are trying to get better with their budgets. My husband and I live below the poverty line and are raising a larger family. I have about $500 to spend every month and make every cent count for all meals and snacks.
My kids don’t even know what kool aid or Frosted Flakes are 😅
Gotta try that chicken taco recipe! I made your garlic chicken and the male I live with, my brother, said OMG! So scrumptious!
Hope you enjoy
I got rid of my Keurig altogether. It's stupid expensive. I switched to Folgers and it actually tastes better...and saves a bunch of money!!
I 2 stores where I still can get lettuce for $.88 a head but the lettuce she buys are almost dbl what she paid here in FL so I guess my point is I think it depends on location and access as to whether you are wrong 😊
what would you do w the rest of the can of pumpkin?
I would freeze it.😊
I love this one because we all have cravings and we need more lectures from you Tawra!
I don't have cravings any more.
Yes food on top of the fridge drives me crazy
Good morning,
this has nothing really to do with this segment. I just want to thank you for sharing, I can freeze bananas 🙌🏻 my girls are back in college and my husband and I can’t eat them fast enough. Frozen for 3weeks made the most moist wonderful banana nut bread. 💕
From the Uk. Got a colleague who lives on a farm and got 2 big legs, neck pieces, loin pieces, burgers, 2 shoulders, liver for £80. Got lamb for a full year and have been able to share with the mother in law!

I need a cheap homemade version of Nesquik powder!!! It's crazy expensive and my husband and younger son love it
Cocoa powder isn’t cheap either.
Oh you hide the candy. Oh my gosh that’s hilarious 😂😂😂
We don't pay tax on groceries here in Michigan...but, of course tax is added on fast food...which we rarely buy.😊
It's amazing how people make excuses for everything. I have bought caps to re-use on my kurge cups and can reuse one cup at least 3 more times. I buy maxwell house ground and once my kurge cup is used I clean it, dry it and refill it, if you're in a hurry prefill each cup, replace the cap and store it so when you're ready its ready. I never use a full pound of meat for any meal I make. I take one pound and split it so i can make two separate meals.1/2 a pound of hamburger is more than enough for spaghetti meat sauce.
If your making a protein, you can also take some of the juices from the meat and add it to the gravy mixture for flavor….
My youngest 4 kids now want me to wait and only watch your videos when they are around! They are ages 7, 9, 11, and 13. You are reaching younger audiences! They let me know when they disagree with you, but in a respectful manner. (They love berries!) 😂They love watching, learning, and discussing.
LOL that's great!
Look on Albertson's add at top has Throwback started with eggs 92 cents limit 2 next week cheese 92 cents limit 4 this week ground turkey 93 cents a pound
Hello Tawra and Mike these videos seem really interesting but the volume is not the same as your other videos. Is there anyway you can crank up the volume? Yes I can listen later and put on the words but I want to listen live:):):)
I noticed that too. I was having a hard time hearing the lady's video especially.
Oh my gosh I don't know if I could do the Great Value Coffee but I'm thinking about it.
Could get one of your reg coffee and one of the great value and mix it... then, over time, add less and less of your regular coffee... that way you get used to the taste and the change doesn't feel like you're giving something up
Gravy ,good hack ! Will try that.👍
Great 👍 video and I have your first book. Thank you so much. ❤❤❤
Put extra jarred and canned (pest and pet resistant containers) under furniture--sofa, bed, etc. Also use the extra space in closets--not in the bathroom linen closets because of heat and moisture. However, my mother uses the hall linen closet to keep extra food like an extra can of coffee, 2 extra boxes of mac-n-cheese, extra stuffing boxes bought on after holiday clearance, etc. The woman is in her 80's and still goes to the store for a good after holiday sale to stock up. She also checks the local store ads on her phone every week. She pays cash. That being said, she does go to the dollar store and keeps a couple of treats for her great grand children (2y-11y).
I love your kitchen ! It’s looks fab. ❤
Thanks so much! 😊
Spend 3.75 for coffee and 2.55 for creamer total 6.31 ÷30 = 21 cent a day for 2 oeople
We never have more than 2 boxes open at a time also for the 2 of us. I don't want them to get stale.
Ok I can't completely reach top shelf will require help but I in the closet pantry and just about organized one shelf and I out of breath but hey after yesterday with you online doing your friends and then later online with another that is hopeless to helping herself and another sick all the time that made me say hey I listened to you
I have lost left eye vision it's blurry in July I also now have a hand wrist pain that hurts my arm and have yet to get Dr to return my call for a referral
But I am doing what you said what I can take breaks and go back not over do but make some progress a little at a time.
I have been stocking up for a long time but I need to use and organize
There are days I can only get small items fixed to eat and I have started buying toward my now age 66 meals for a quick bite or just enough to fill me up kinda buying and preparing
Anyway thank you for your tips and thank you for being a good friend to your friend we all wish we had one like we use to be lol
I enjoyed this format as well. I like how you show us the affordable option.
I on second shelf and break again as hand and back hurt now
Another tip that may help her, since she works, is to spend one day a month cooking and portioning out the food per meal. (Could do baked chicken or a casserole in the oven and while its cooking, do up the hamburger or a roast on the stove) Then freeze it. On days she's too tired to cook, just pull out a meal and heat it up. Also on the nights she does cook, cook more and do the same. I usually do my meats and then open a can of veggies and make some mashed potatoes or somethin similar... that way i just have one thing i have to actually cook and the rest is just heating up.
Try the green leaf lettuce it keeps longer can rejuvenate with proper care good for sandwiches burgers and salad it's no longer wasted as the iceberg was around here so it's good for me
And for drinks I do get alot and yogurt too so I don't waste them when you old even a lunchable or s cup of noodles can get you by for lunch and PBJ since lunch meat is so high
All chocolate candy can be stored in the back of the freezer. All you have to do is creative LABLING! like wrap in butcher paper and label it liver!
Much better deals shopping at Sam's club and Costco than your convince stores. It's like going to the post office which is cheaper than going to postal annex
You can make smoothies with frozen fruits from Dollar Tree.
I do not want to see food on top of the refrigerator either.
Green bell peppers are definitely the most budget friendly depending on season. Having three guinea pigs my family goes thru 7 bell peppers a week.
People want excuses.... not solutions😂
400-500 monthly’’ isn’t so much if you purchase quality fish, fresh vegetables & fruits, etc. Husband cannot eat canned foods due to kidney disease.
Aldi, in my area, tends to have better prices on produce than Walmart does. Like fresh mushrooms and lettuce.
Also aldi cereal is way less than Walmart.
I buy ham when it is on sale. I get a big ham and cut it up. I was able to get a huge ham and got it cut up at the deli for so cheap. Can't remember the cost. I froze it in portion sizes and like you said, use a paper towel to get the water out then make your sandwich. I live in IL. I get her prices. I buy my sweet peppers on clearance. She will learn and you did a great job with the video. Thank you.
Tawra, Just saw someone else in the comments, asking you to turn UP the VOLUME, as you are very hard to hear. Thought it was only me. But apparently not. We sure would love you to do that. WE love these shows, but a little higher volume would make it so much more enjoyable. Thanks.
yes having a tech issue with that and we are trying to fix it.
I like the review you are doing for viewers, maybe get a universal version from other countries, thanks ❣
Most school's took out Home Economics, this is what we end up people don't know how to shop, my 23 year old daughter, is finally getting it and my 19 year old is finally putting 2 and 2 together now.
Actually it's not Home Ec...it's mother's decided to work instead of staying home to teach their kids this stuff.
@@LivingOnADimeThere Are working moms who instruct their children, and stay at home moms who do Not.
Great job Tawra and family! Loving your series and cookbook! Great recipe videos- I’m going to try that chicken taco recipe.😊
I so agree with you on this one. We should not be drinking our calories. With your roast if she pours some soy over it, it tenderize it and when you make your gravy, it tastes delicious. The little girl does like her mom's cook, she needs to teach her how to cook. I wasn't unkind about it but my children knew we eat what is put before us. Never allowed them to say yuck.
We use regular coffee and put in Keurig filters, tastes great
On the lettuce, I have heard that some varieties are more nutritious than others. Do you have the scoop on this?
And on the ham at seasonal prices, I have been fortunate in having a friendly relationship with the people in meat department. Knowing that I have a smaller household they will cut the ham in smaller chunks for pan & crock pot size for me😀Then they just wrap whole thing up & I get billed sale price.
Romaine is most nutritional
