Fun fact: the reason the movies were never directly tied into the series is because, back then, movies used to be promotional material, rather than complementary. That means that they usually tried to make the movies as loose as possible and detached so that people didn't have any pre-conceived notions. A lot of people in Japan before the internet used to go to the cinemas to discover new anime via movies and stuff.

Best way to tell where these movies fit other than power levels is what moments and story beats they parallel. Dead Zone is Raditz arc, Tree of Might is just the Saiyan Saga, and Cooler is obviously the Frieza Saga. These movies are just glorified advertisements for the anime.
That’s how I do the pokemon movies. I use Ash’s pkmn in the movies to determine its place. Except for pkmn 2000’ that was easily obviously the orange islands as it was mentioned 😂

Unfortunately for Doto, there’s ANOTHER movie that features an extended Gohan Musical Number, and it’s the very next one!
I think the segment is bred from an interest in catching the attention of a VERY young audience. In Japanese it even comes with lyrics to sing along to!
They dropped the idea fairly quickly, but you can see the intention behind it from a mile away. I can’t say I hate the attempt (okay, I can say I hate it, but I’m trying to be nice), but I’m glad we decided very early on to not feature The Gohan Musical Number for very long.
It's always surprising to me every time Nano brings up what little experience he has had with the ocean dub. I don't think me and Nano are that far apart in age and I have distinct memories of growing up and watching the ocean dub on TV. High-pitched Vegeta, "my arm will grow back" Tien, brilliant scientist etc.
Bro, finding out where the Z movies were in the timeline was the most infuriating thing for me since pretty much the first time I found out they were a thing. What do you _mean_ the Turles and Lord Slug movies are placed in the Namek Saga? They take place _on Earth!_
It only really made sense when I learned that the movies were based on how the writers at Toei _thought_ the arc would end. In the Turles movie, the writers thought Goku and co would just nab the Dragon Balls, wish their friends back, and immediately get tf off of Namek, which is why Turles mentions Frieza but Goku doesn't have SSJ yet. In the Lord Slug movie, the writers thought Goku would just go SSJ, beat Frieza, and immediately come home, which is why Piccolo and Krillin are fine. They didn't even know how SSJ looked like yet, which is why SSJ in the movie didn't change Goku's hair color.
But even with that explanation, you still have to do loops and tricks to try to figure out what these writers were thinking a good 30+ years ago. Nowadays, they just tell you where the movies take place and make sure it makes sense in the timeline. So much better.

Yeah back in the day nobody talked about canon or non canon we just geeked out over the fights and transformations and other moments we liked.
Watched the Ocean dub of this with my 6 year old twins and they loved the Gohan stuff. So I think it's for the kids. They were losing it lol
2:30 Back in the day, Dragon Ball movies were either, in the case of the OG Dragon Ball movies, quick retellings of the story (which I kind of wish Daima was), or were purely promotional material to advertise the series by showing off the main cast and what they could do.
So nowadays, post-DB Renaissance, the movies have set their sights higher to try to connect with the main series and expand on the already existing content, but before they were essentially the Z equivalent of the Super Dragon Ball Heroes anime.

This was my first watch of Dead Zone and I enjoyed it! I've also never seen any other dragon ball z movies so I can't wait to get to them with yall!

I honestly think the Garlic Jr saga in DBZ is way more fun, at least in English. Garlic Jr has some pretty memeable lines in that saga

4:22 People tend to either undervalue or very much overvalue canonicity in Dragon Ball. Knowing what is canon _is_ important in knowing what to expect in the series going forward (and I guess if you're trying to pinpoint exactly how strong the characters are; good luck with _that)_ but not knowing if something is canon 100% isn't the end of existence and going off of headcanons is, well... pretty much the _only_ way to piece together Dragon Ball at times.
Especially since Toriyama could just decide that something which is non-canon is cool enough and just slap it onto the canon anyways (which, iirc, was the case with Bardock all the way back then).
Like, for example, I _do_ want to know if Toriyama wants to go forward with the 1 hour Potara time limit - or even if he was the one that created it, since he never even wrote Vegito appearing in the outline for Super - because _for me_ it cheapens Vegito's appearance back in Z and made it so his plan was _seconds away_ from supremely failing, but in the grand scheme of the story everything still works regardless if it is a canon element or not. And canonicity being detached from enjoying the series is especially true in current times, where even following what is exactly canon or not in modern Dragon Ball is straight up a Herculean task (there are literally whole debates on whether Ultra Instinct is canon or not).
I think people take it way too seriously especially in dragon ball. I don't personally think canon actually matters in this series at all, there's already now including daima coming up (just assuming it couldn't possibly be the same universe as super) 3 completely different continuations of dbz. The only way of really determining canon would be "well did toriyama write it?" Which he's apparently more involved in daima than any other piece of dragon ball since the original return with battle of gods so does this make only battle of gods and resurrection f along with daima canon? It's an absolute mess and I refuse to have genuine arguments about it with anyone especially considering it breaks down to "oh your a fan of THIS continuation? Your opinion is invalid because you don't agree with my personal preferred timeline" the conversations get genuinely toxic. And then these movies are very easily disregardable as non canon but I always end up not caring and watch certain more fitting ones at their appropriate points during rewatches like cooler and Bojack. Which yes I accept them as non canon but the point being I just do not care and find a lot of what happens in the movies even more interesting anyway so In my own personal head canon I accept alot of it on the grounds of purely "I very much enjoy these certain ones and think they make enough sense to consider them canon" even with Naruto storm connections some people myself included loved the Boruto story and the new characters it introduced enough to start throwing it out there that we would like it to be recognized as canon. These conversations can get so complicated and I tend to just really not care about canon. I hate the conversations around it so much. I just enjoy what I enjoy and connect what actually makes the most sense, and honestly DB, dbz, going on with GT is the timeline that actually makes the most sense to me. Super has never made any sense to me and seems to only get more nonsensical as it goes on.

I never understood the hate for it as someone that has always literally already been a fan of all of these bands before ever hearing them in these movies. Plus a few of them just genuinely fit like a glove like having Goku transform to change by Deftones was perfect, and 10s by Pantera purely from instrumentals alone is a perfect song for broly. Sometimes it can feel random but other times it makes the whole scene.
I always felt that the early Dragon Ball Z Movies were really cool in the sense that they had the Dragon Ball aesthetic and combat choreography. All the OG DBZ movies were kinda weird but they kinda had this cool vibe about em.
I'm of the opposite opinion personally, I prefer the movies beibg nebulous.
To me it made it so most wouldn't worry about cannon, not cannon, real, fake. It was all just Dragon Ball
But now with Super and the new movies it's just been either (this is cannon and therefore good) vs (this isn't cannon and automatically is bad) and I hate that
It's all Dragon Ball at the end of the day, we should cherish it all, DB, Z Movies, GT, Super, all of it is the series we fell in love with.
