  • The second movement of Shostakovich's 10th Symphony, recorded by Evgeny Mravinsky and the Leningrad Philharmonic, a few months after the premiere. Audio restored with the best sound ever, if I do say so myself.
If you'd like to hear the whole thing in the same quality, check out my website:

The snare really sounds like machine gun fire in this recording.

The video, and particularly the shots of Stalin, make this recording particularly chilling. Great job!

To quote Shostakovich: "I did depict Stalin in my next symphony, the Tenth. I wrote it right after Stalin's death and no one has yet guessed what the symphony is about. It's about Stalin and the Stalin years. The second part, the scherzo, is a musical portrait of Stalin, roughly speaking. Of course, there are many other things in it, but that's the basis."

Do you happen to know if this recording (in good sound) is commercially available on CD? Thanks.

I'm not 100% certain, but I believe it is here - www.prestoclassical.co.uk/r/Praga/DSD350115 - its a performance from Prague on 3/6/1955, 18 months after the premiere

The link that you indicated contains a Beethoven symphony and a Shostakovich symphony, no violin concerto. So, that can't be the CD. Plus it is from 1955, but the concerto is from 1956...

As the description above says "The second movement of Shostakovich's 10th Symphony, recorded by Evgeny Mravinsky and the Leningrad Philharmonic, a few months after the premiere." The link is (I think) the recording of Shostakovich's 10th Symphony that the clip is from, if not it's the same orchestra & conductor obviously and from a similar time.

I think this is not the best footage to put over it. I personally think this movement is about the reckless and dangerous movement and work of the Stalinist government, and the footage shown in the video is a parade to entertain him. A simple caricature of Stalin will drive the point home much faster than this. Beautiful performance though.
