Lady Marmalade (original) - The Eleventh Hour 1974.wmv

- Lady Marmalade was written by Bob Crewe and Kenny Nolan. The song came about after Crewe made first-hand observations in New Orleans. First recorded by Nolan's group Eleventh Hour in 1974 on Eleventh Hour's Greatest Hits LP, Labelle's producer Allen Toussaint decided to record it as the main track for the album Nightbirds. Released in December 1974, it became a number-one hit the next year. (wikipedia)
Thanks Joop Jansen (audio) and Dick Rosemont (artwork).
There is another version posted on UA-cam purporting to be the "ORIGINAL' version, which in my opinion is the Eleventh Hour's late 1975 re-recording of the song, following their hit 'Hollywood Hot'. Any additional info welcome.

Very interesting! I never knew about any of this...Labelle's rendition was so authoritative I always assumed the song was their own.
+Charlotte Tan Well when you got exceptional singers covering it that will happen. Interesting indeed.
shows how much studio work these songs are all about. Patti Labelle(not her real name btw) was actually not a very good singer, not from the South and had no idea what the French words were. Definitely right person for this RAUNCH tho!
@@doolittlegeorge I don't agree. she has an amazing voice with strength
Andrew Doolittle she’s from philli and has never denied that her name is patticia(patti) labelle was the name of the group she was in which she was the LEAD singer of AND she still hits the same notes at 70 she’s always been a strong singer and looks like she’s in her 50s
@@doolittlegeorge not a good singer? You need to hearing checked dude lol
That's a weird thing to know how a song was born: first it came the rhythm, then someone added a text and changed the music, then another came back to the original BPM, used the new text, added a new voice tone and Boom. One of the most famous song.
That's nice to know how songs are born and also weird to decide what version you want to add to your playlist.
Well, thank God that this lead to Patti's version...
Including the famous vamp "Hey, Sister, Go, Sister"....you know the rest.
The song was written by Bob Crewe and Kenny Nolan, and was inspired by Crewe's experiences in New Orleans and the sex workers in the area.[citation needed] A demo of the song was first recorded by The Eleventh Hour, a disco group made up of studio musicians fronted by Nolan on vocals.[4] It was added in 1974 as a track on the Eleventh Hour's Greatest Hits LP which did not chart.[5][6] Crewe showed the song to Allen Toussaint in New Orleans, and Toussaint then decided to record the song with Labelle (thank God).
Love the harmonizing on this... But the song doesn't end well... LaBelles version is an absolute classic!
Perhaps you’d like to suggest how the song should end? Someone’s rough draft got improved on-You’re correct but not well versed in composition
@@andyh9381 just seeing this, sorry... Lol, yeah it could've ended with Patti taking over the track. Which she did.
It's a demo...
"the song doesnt end well"??? Speak for yourself
It so weird, that is why Labelle’s (and her voice) rendition was an absolute success.
As a Louisiana Creole, this is authentic... Oui!!!... Labelle delivered a catchy disco version, designed for dancing... The original version delivered the story and favor of New Orleans.
LOL...THIS IS ACTUALLY THE DISCO VERSION. LABELLE WAS A HARDCORE R&B GROUP. NOTHING ABOUT THEIR VERSION WAS DISCO. IM NOT SURE WHY U THOUGHT THEY WERE DISCO. IT WAS VERY HITTING AND ALONG THE LINES OF OHIO PLAYERS, OG KOOL AND THE GANG ETC. JUST BECAUSE THEY WERE BLACK AND FEMALES, DRESSED IN SPACE AVANT GARDE CLOTHING, DIDN'T MAKE THEM ANYWHERE NEAR DISCO. PARLAMENT FUNKADELIC WERE R&B FUNK AND THEY DRESSED ECCENTRIC TOO. MAKING IT MORE COMMERCIAL AND DANCEABLE ISN'T QUALIFIED DISCO. IF U LOOK IT UP, THIS BAND WAS INDEED A DISCO BAND. THOSE ARRANGEMENTS WERE PURE DISCO. LABELLE'S WERE NOT.
This version is so addictive 😂
Liking for he jazzy funk feel of this original!
This is the original version. Thank you for the upload!!
This is the 1st version of Lady Marmalade recorded by The Eleventh Hour before Labelle recorded their mega hit version. They recorded it again in 1975 and the arrangement is loosley based on Labelle's version of "Lady Marmalade" from 1974 which was produced by Allen Toussaint. Ironically, this version (1974) was was first recorded by The Eleventh Hour as a demo which was released in France only as a 45 rpm 7" single on the Disc'Az label titled as "Voulez-Vous Coucher Avec Moi Ce Soir (Lady Marmalade)" clocking in at only 4 minutes and 09 seconds and backed with "He Did Ya Good (But I'll Do That Better)". This first recorded original version eventually showed up in the States on a 'Greatest Hit Of...' compilation LP (see thumbnail on video) after Labelle's version became the huge hit it turned into.
I am from New Or-Leans and this song signify New Orleans feeling and sounds. Labelle is ok to but I love this O-version
Agreed. Although Labelle's version is the one I grew up with and I love it, it sounds like a free love anthem shouted from a recording studio. This one describes not just with words but music the funk, the feel, the snaky sleaze of a hot night in New Orleans's less reputable areas, and puts you right there on the street.
I think Allen Toussaint was involved in the production/arrangement of this version, which might explain it.
@@Rasbiff Correct.
@@Rasbiff He played on it too, keyboards I think.
I didn’t think I’d like this due to my everlasting LOYALTY to Auntie Patti & LaBelle. This kinda slaps. Not as spirited as LaBelle, but still got a groove.
Holy crap it sounds like Edith Bunker on lead vocals.
LMFAO.....EXACTLY!!
Gitchie, gitchie, ya-ya Awwwrchie!
"AnD yOu KnEw WhO yOu WeRe THEN!"
This is the demo version presented to the group Labelle so they could sing and get a feel for it.
YOU JUST GOT KRISSED!!
I dont understand you guysss i love this version its so chill and sensual
Ive been looking for this song forever but didnt know the lyrics.
It has a key change!!!! 💙🧡💙🧡
50 Years! Wow!
It's like Prince is singing this
Guys literally written for a girls to sing it.
Kenny Nolan, "I Like Dreamin'", a big hit in 1977.
In this version you can hear the lyrics much better. I know Dr. John didn't write this song, but it kind of sounds like he did ...
man, wow! I had never head this before but have played it 5x now-- I like better than the smooth, masses-pleasing version that was a hit!
Originals have real spirit behind it, unlike watered down disneyland versions for masses.
@@yesgood1357:
There was nothing watered down about LaBelle's version---it was more kick-ass, even more souful, and sung by the great vocal group Labelle. Plus Alan Toussaint produced it---that's also why it sounds great.
The eleventh - Labele - Christina
I like to listen to originals and I must say the popular version is probably better.
You should see how Chaundraunce wags his Shame to this tune, with such joviality! What say you?
_Good Day._
This is perfect. Adore it, and personally prefer it to other versions. I can also imagine Alan Cumming singing this in a Cabaret like theatre play.
I'm sure Alec is a very talented performer, but another singer from the UK covering an American soul hit? Eh, I'll take a pass on that .... I'd rather hear what the Pointer Sisters might do with this song
Lacking energy.
Aye it’s all those descending melodies…
Damn, this is really cool!
I LOVE this Original version. The beats the voices.... Pattie La Belle's will be my close second love. The 2000s version is ok.
Geoffrey Jones-- I AGREE 100%
Kenny Nolan exaggerated when he said 'Labelle;s version was 10 times faster, in tempo.'
@DJDiscocat You are absolutely right, your version (5'01") comes from the 1975 album Hollywood Hot, I'm not denying that. Labelle's hit version was released December 1974 by the way. Why is it so hard to grasp there are TWO versions by The Eleventh Hour? The one here is their 1974 recording (4'09") taken from their Greatest Hits album.
It's clear the words take a back sest to the 'why can't we live together' beat and are merely there there to provide 'atmosphere'.
Written by Kenny Nolan and Bob Crewe (writer of many Four Seasons hits) from Crewe's experiences with prostitutes in New Orleans' French Quarter.
Well I really like this version!!
The original Kriss
LaBelle’s version of this song is the First to be released to World as Single.( meaning that it was the first to be released to radio stations and music stores)
Which makes That the original version!
The eleventh hour only recorded this as a demo for the group Labelle.
Eleventh Hour had lady marmalade on their greatest hits album, but it was not released as “Single”.
Most songs have demo versions (rough recordings). When someone writes and
produces a song for an artist or group, they first record a DEMO.
The original Lady Marmalade released to the World as single was done by Patti LaBelle, Sarah Dash and Nona Hendryx (Labelle)
@SOUL FAN This version was recorded before Labelle's cover, so yes, The Eleventh Hour's version is the original.
spookym123 Well it might have been recorded first, but LaBelle’s version was the First to be released as single, first to be played on radio, first to hit charts, first to played on television. The eleventh hour did not release their version because it was recorded as a demo.
Have you never heard some artist say, the first time they heard a song? Because when songwriters and producers pitch a song to a record label they use a demo recording.
I’ll make an example , The song “My Girl” by the Temptations, was written by Smokey Robinson. Smokey did a version in studio and had the temptations hear the song and then they recorded.
Even though Smokey wrote the song , the Temptations are known as the original hit makers of the song.
Ne-Yo wrote the song “Irreplaceable” for Beyoncé, he recorded a demo version of the song, she liked it and she recorded it and it became a Hit.
If this Eleventh hour version was released as single, it would have been a different story. But it was recorded with the intention of being a demo for Labelle. They later added it into their greatest hits lp.
The eleventh hour was not show band, they were a studio band mostly. They would play on records.
Demo versions of songs are not recorded to be released as “Singles”, they are recorded for another or artist to listen and then to record.
The eleventh hour lead singer Kenny wrote songs with bob crewe.
They wrote lady marmalade and My eyes adored you in 1974.
Lady marmalade for Labelle and My eyes adored you for Frankie Vallie.
The eleventh hour recorded both songs and had them played for these artists.
@@soulfan9113 So you agree, The Eleventh Hour's version is the original.
spookym123 If we talking about first ever to sing it or first ever to record it. Then of course The Eleventh Hour is first to do that. They composed and co wrote the song after all. Labelle version is still the first to be released as a single. So Lady marmalade will always be referred to as song that was first made famous by labelle. I suppose all demo versions and non singles are Originals. 👌🏽in that regard you’re right👍🏽
SOUL FAN but it’s not the original and it is a cover and thats okay cause it’s much better than the original
I know Bob Crewe wrote this song, and "Eleventh Hour" was one of his studio aggregations. I think his Disco Tex record came out around this time, too. But are you sure that's Kenny Nolan? The guy who did two of the gooiest hits of all time a couple of years later?
Maybe he had helium in his mouth when he recorded this. We all know that Patti was the all-time Philly soul diva, yet she went to the right guy when her group made it the mega-hit it became. Who better to give it that Crescent City gumbo feel than Mr. New Orleans R&B himself, the late and (very!) great Allen Toussaint? And he didn't even play piano on that record! We miss you, Allen. New Orleans music died a little when you passed.
Kenny Nolan co-wrote and sang the song in a falsetto baby voice.
SLAAAAAAY U JUST GOT KRISSED 🤩🤩🤩💥🤩
I bought their album when it came out...I still love it...I'm looking for it on cd. Thanks so much for sharing this..how is the band now?
Written by guys before passing on to a girls, legendary male OG version.
cool the speed and irony back the seven teeth
@waltervdbus & ......you are correct!
That means “Do you want to sleep 😴 with me tonight?” 0:48
love it!!!
5-4-24 I didn't this is the actual original version 😎 🎶 ☺
Thank god LaBelle rescued this song....
The Maven Then came Christina Aguilera, Lil Kim, Mya & Pink. And the song dominated the charts.
Cmon This version is the best version)
but it was kenny nolan and bob crewe .. who wrote this tune.. and nolan can do it anyway he likes.. he created it
@@Ezwider109 exactly
The original version is cool.
I agree @BigDawgTE
Well…we all know the winner of the best version 😊
no es una competencia, es desarrollo, es ampliar
It kinda has a WAR kinda feel to it
YOU JUST GOT KRISSED
Screw you and the kardashians
I didn't realise the original version of Lady Marmalade was written by Julian and Sandy. "How dolly to vada your dolly old eek!"

Trying to make out this part-- it's exclusive to this version.
Can anybody fill in the blank?
"Tu __________ souvenir"
Hey so maybe you’ll never see this, but I’ve been listening to this and one other version and I think it’s “tout estouté souvenir” which apparently (google translate) means “all memory washed away” or something 👍
Not a fan but can respect it
So GRIMY so gritty and rugged
Just a nice rusty fist to the face
muy buena cancion '0'
Wow, The Meters just got even funkier.

FUN FACT: The latest cover was used by the Kardashians, CONVERTED to the KRISSED MEME
LaBelle!!! (I just found out "Mickey" by Toni Basil; And Earth, Wind, & Fire "Can't Hide Love" were both remakes).
Ramon Hart my grandmother told me EWF Can’t Jude Love was a remake but couldn’t remember who originally made it ... lol
The eleventh hour was the original of the lady marmalade
I have this album. It was indeed the original. I believe that is Kenny Nolan singing the falsetto lead. I only have the single of "Hollywood Hot", but I know it came out about a year or so later. I'm guessing "Lady Marmalade" was re-recorded for the 'Hollywood Hot' album with a different line-up. The Eleventh Hour was just a studio concoction it seems. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
Patti made it a classic
Kenny Nolan's falsetto fit perfectly with Disco Tex & The Sex-O-Lettes. Not so much on this...
Patti LaBelle's version is WAY Better!
What’s the line that ends in “souvenir”? Is it in French?
Not bad. The Patti Labelle version is better, but this is not bad.
perez moore you realize that this song is the original right? the LaBelle one was a cover lol
@@ipanema3460yes you are correct .. the eleventh hour was the original
✨✨🌸

L'original c'est toujours mieux.............

A cover of a cover of a song
Outkast brought me here
What the hell…!😳🤔😬. Lead singer sound like Toad from Mario Kart….dang!
The hipster cred is real... but the Labelle version is definitely better.
I agree
I'm glad labelle took over this
Best version imo
1. Bob Crewe rocks.
2. This audio is totally out of phase! Flip the phase on one channel to hear what it's really supposed to sound like, or for real laughs mono the two channels together and hear it almost completely disappear!
3. I hope the actual record was not issued with the audio out of phase!
So LaBelle remade it!!
Are there any video of this song?
Only Patty La Belle version
Anyone know where i can find the whole album?
I thought the 2000 version was the original
...yikes...
Technically this was the original but it did poorly. Labelle made it a hit in 1975
All due respect to The Eleventh Hour, but I prefer the version performed by LaBelle
Cheo I totally agree with you. You will understand why when you see my comment from April 19, 2020
The lead in this song sounds like Childish Gambino singing " Redbone" lol.

I'm know I am eons late with this comment. But I have to wonder if it it was this particular version that was presented to Alan Toussaint to consider for the group LaBelle in 1974. I sincerely doubt it. This is the worst mix of a song I have ever heard. Even a genius producer like Toussaint could not have gotten LaBelle's version from that mess. Not to mention that Crewe and Nolan were both well known hitmakers at that time and could get the money to produce something a bit more polished than this. No I think that the so called "2nd version" by Eleventh Hour was the first version. My guess is that for whatever reason it never got released until after LaBelle's 1974 smash hit by some secret agreement or whatever.
Is the group name LaBelle or is that Patti LaBelle because she recorded it too
⁉️⁉️⁉️⁉️
It's the group with Pattie
Facepalm
Just look it up
Not a fan of this original. It just doesn't sound right to me. I gew up with Patti LaBelle's version, but the version from Moulon Rouge is by far my favorite.
It is out of phase and so its sounds like crap, flip the phase on the one channel and its great!!
Outkast sampled this
Pedro Moe They sure did. For their debut album from 1994.
Who came from TikTok?
No
Literally Nobody
This is the original but it sounds god awful, thankfully Christina Aguilera and Missy Elliott did a masterful rendition
LaBelle is my fave. Followed by Sheila E’s early 90s cover (better live than recorded). I guess this one next. Cuz the moulan rouge version is the worst.
they sound a mess and not a hot one
omg! is elmo and the muppets singing on this track lol! terrible. this is patty labelle's song now. never play this one again!
Wow. The original is really bad in comparison to many of the later cover versions.
Horrible
