No. Private healthcare is working with provincial governments to dismantle our healthcare system. They are working together to create the negative conditions of high cost and ineptitude in order to justify the takeover by private entities. The USA has the highest cost for healthcare, and it has the lowest level of care out of first world countries. This is where we are headed, to a system Canada can't afford. If people really want to get private healthcare they should go to the USA, it's right beside us. There's no excuse to take healthcare away from the majority of Canadians for the comfort of the minority that can still afford things like rent, food, and transportation.
i work in a hospital.. agency nurses are definitely not 3% of staffing. problem is also cultural, the new gen grads want instant gratification. if you look at dollar by dollar, public nurses are probably competitive. but agency nurses get paid "more" because they dont provide pension or benefits. so in lieu of pension, vacation pay and benefits, their take home pay is higher. and it gives the gen z and millenial nurses options if they want to travel and not be tied down to a hospital and get 3-4 weeks of vacation and need prior approval from management, etc. they just say, "nah, i wont work those weeks. thanks."

The laughable part of this is, most of the nurses being paid by an agency, if not all, are the same nurses working at the same facilities, they work at full or part-time. Facilitates, that refuse to pay them over-time and or a better wage. So the nurses just go and work agency. They make more money working agency. There is a down side to this, some of the nurses are working at two or three hospitals above their full-time positions. Several of my colleagues worked back to back shifts frequently. 12 hours day shift full-time employer. 12 hours night shift agency. Some doing this several times per month. Apart from the exhausting shifts, this is truly unsafe from a patient care perspective...The CNO does nothing to control this unsafe practice. When you ask these nurse why they practice this type of schedule? They all have the same answer. Money. I have seen colleagues falling to sleep at the desk during day shift, plus taking extended lunch breaks while hiding in storage rooms to sleep because they pulled a night shift, then came into their day job usually showing up late for duty. The shocking truth is, we need more nurses, not more migrants that drain the already cash strapped province. Moon-lighting, has become a serious safety issue in health care. It's time to act.

I have never worked in a Canadian hospital precisely because of this. I worked as an RN in Texas 30 years ago and we had steady shifts. It CAN be done.
