This is rapidly becoming my favourite channel for cultural and political topics. Peter Whittle is a superb host asking intelligent perceptive questions allowing the guest time and space to answer fully without constant interruptions. BRAVO !!!
The term "citizen of the world" reminds me of this bit of Bleak House: "She is like the morning," he said. "With that golden hair, those blue eyes, and that fresh bloom on her cheek, she is like the summer morning. The birds here will mistake her for it. We will not call such a lovely young creature as that, who is a joy to all mankind, an orphan. She is the child of the universe." Mr. Jarndyce, I found, was standing near us with his hands behind him and an attentive smile upon his face. "The universe," he observed, "makes rather an indifferent parent, I am afraid."
My god, I recognise myself as a once 30yo American living in the UK by that description! I considered my anti-Americanism as being the 'Good American' with others whose duty was to pour scorn on my culture and apologise about our existence. Well, with self-loathing Brits I was in welcome company! And their contempt for the Union Jack would sometimes even shock me. But I've matured since then and I find myself defending America/ns with strength now. I also call out British self-loathing when I see it as something destructive and ignorant.
Georg Shteln glad to hear you have realised the need to see the many positives of these cultures, it is too easy to constantly focus on the negative and exagerate them which create problems
Grey Chip are you talking to me mate ? I totally agree with you, the cultures I was talking about were the UK and America, all this self hate is cobblers, the west has achieved so much, or have I misunderstood you ?
@Grey Chip I used to scoff when, say, a Staffordshire man woyud say, 'London isn't the centre if the world'. But I realise now how true that is. London is most certainly not a reflection of what England is. The capitol city of..... where? It's not England. This is just one metropolis of 'the world' but not of the English. Alarming to think like this.
I thoroughly enjoyed these interviews with Lionel Shriver. They are so thankfully sane in a world of strap lines and catch phrases that mean nothing at all. I am tired of my friends saying they aren't British, they're Europeans. What a crock of nonesense. Are the French and Germans denying their national identity and history? For the most part I am proud to be British. All nations have shameful histories.
"You cannot defend yourself against what you didn't say" - so true and so apt in this strange world where words and even thoughts are ascribed and twisted by others.
The lady writes in the Spectator, anyone who is on the sane side of the debate should take out a subscription to the Speccy, I wait for the postlady with baited breath every Friday. My late wife introduced me Ms Shriver's books a long time ago. Does anyone remember the late night arts and serious chat shows on bbc, Ignatief, Paulin, et.al?
If only all our media were as aware and intelligent as these two! The establishment only want one track minded presenters who will interrupt and suppress contrarians - isn't that right, BBC?
The bbc I feel has shot its bolt, I have not turned my tv or radio on since Sept 2017, radio 4 turned into a whiney wimmin's hour from farming today until midnight. I now only watch stuff that I choose, no condescending continuity hushed toned female voices. Or fake Lewis/Humphrey's so called balanced "news/comment". When did they start allowing personal comments on news programs, they should be separate programs.
@@briangable08 - If you listened now you'd find it worse. I drive a lot and listen to radio 4, because I can see through the propaganda to the quality of (some) programmes. But EVERY programme, no matter how unrelated, has to have a dig at Brexit, or say how stupid are Brexiteers - comedies are probably the worst, the word has only to appear for the canned laughter to start. Plays and documentaries are also used to tell us how sweet all immigrants are, how gay lifestyles are normal, how children should be encouraged to attempt the impossible in changing their gender, and how conservative (in the non-political sense) thinking is automatically a sign of brutish prejudice. Of course some who read this will contend that the foregoing indicates my own brutish prejudice, but I reply that my opinions on these subjects are reasoned from a lifetime of observation and experience of what works for people, not unthinking parroting of what was fed to me when young - indeed my parents were middle class, liberal and 'right-on', and didn't agree with my rejection of so many of their tenets. So it may be prejudice, and I do hope it upsets the politically correct, but it is not brutish. 3 years of this has, naturally, changed the minds of some uncommitted leave voters, and so the aim of the establishment is the 'I told you the first vote was wrong' next referendum.
She is a genuine National Treasure. Period. The best conversation I've seen and listened to so far on New Culture Forum. I could listen to Lionel Shriver all the live day long. I didn't even know who she was, though I did buy a second-hand copy of We Need To Talk About Kevin for a friend whose name is Kevin. I might ask him one time to lend it to me so that I can read it.
John Davis And the absolute worst of the worst about many of those programmes is how often they kick off by pointing out over and over that these are the voices we never hear when in reality the only people we never hear from on the BBC are those who are generally on the receiving end of being accused of one sort of prejudice or another. Prejudice being the absolute most common concept in the minds of the moguls at the beeb it would seem. Strangely enough this has produced a counter reaction from me in that it has caused me to actually be deeply prejudiced. Not prejudiced that is against women or immigrants but rather against utterly biased media corporations with an agenda which have the cheek to ignore the will of the people in a (so called) democracy.
western culture and free speech started to be eroded by our own kind. It started in the 60's with people like Peter Hitchen's who openly admitted he was a Bolshevik, they entered the judiciary, the education system and the political system too. they worked through the universities on children who were rebelling against parent's and grandparents who were damaged through the wars and were probably quite strict. (hence the peace loving 60's). they over corrected. each generation is angry and thinks they can do a better job than their parents.. anger, guilt and shame have been manipulated, consciously and now we are living in a strange 1984 situation. Yuri Bezmenov was spot on. I love this channel by the way, breath of fresh air.
I made a similar comment about Jewish/Bolshevik influence in Western governments. My comment has disappeared and so has the reply by 'Matthew Rowe' calling the OP 'scum'. Free speech indeed.
@@goodyeoman4534 My reply also disappeared WTF. I never thought of Soros as Jewish until you pointed it out. Agreed Soros is a scumbag, however his faith is completely irrelevant, same goes for Barbara....

Just to say a big 'thank you' for this channel - I'm really enjoying these interviews. They are Fake News BBC editorial director Kamal Ahmed, professional moaner and attention seeker Laurie Penny, former Equality chairman Trevor Phillips and Leftie politician David Lammy. Good luck with that lot if you're hoping for any interesting or innovative views.
Is there a more divisive figure than David Lammy?? Short of blowing white people up I don't think so. He is the epitome of everything wrong with Britain at the moment. The mere sight of him makes me throw things at the tv!! Great work with your channel Peter, every episode has been spot on but these 2 with Lionel were my favourites so far, she is absolutely fantastic. Try to snag Mark Steyn next time he’s in the UK as I know you’d have a great conversation
The BBC does allow Lionel onto Question Time (or rather Interruption Time as it should be called) like it does a few select others it thinks it can isolate in a 5versus1 debate for the purpose of showing the masses how thinking differently to anybody else is completely and utterly unacceptable and illogical. People believe it because they want to. The BBC and their propaganda are basically sick in the head with what they have been peddling, they don't give a crap about minorities just use them as convenient political footballs and often in very patronising tones. If people would just listen more carefully either side of the constant interruptions they would realise that their intelligence is constantly being insulted and they are even paying for that privilege. One born every minute as they say.
As an American living over 20 years in London so much rings true about her understanding of the narcissism and self-loathing of both Americans and Brits alike when you see it. I was once one of those 'loathers' myself, I have to say, so I can see- no smell it when it appears in people. While I don't work in the field of creative arts I work in the public sector and information- boy am I outnumbered and at risk should I say a positive word about President Trump or have a critical view of multiculturalism, Brexit, Feminism, immigration, men's rights, etc. Anything worth discussing or commenting on of worth is strictly verboten. The whole ethos and policy structure would be lined up against me. I even have to seek new friends now that Orange Man Bad is in the Oval Office. It can be lonely in this one-hell-of-a-non-English capitol city.
I'd like to hear more about Lionel's background, how she came to live in the UK, how her views were formed. That's what made the Rod Little interview good; you learnt that he had once been on the far left and that he saw his roots as lying outside London.
Amen! When you impoverish the language you cheapen meaning; we live in a very shallow, insincere and absurd age. An apology isn't something you score, it's something you either give or receive: you can't give what isn't yours to give nor receive something from someone giving something that's been taken.
It isn't fair that Lionel has to do so much of this brave work with such little help from other capable artists. They should be interviewed on the reasons they disagree with her so much as to pass on the opportunity while she's out there defending their freedom to create.
The serious question buried in the culture borrowing debate is whether a novelist or composer does that “borrowing” in a truly insightful and accurate way. I mean, some portrayals of American black or a British Pakistani by others could be clumsy, cartoonish, etc. But the notion that non-group members shouldn’t write about others is absurd and mean-spirited, and would spell the demise of artistic sensibility and plain human sympathetic imagination. Shriver and you, Peter, discuss the issues here brilliantly. I hope these conversations start to reach people beyond those of us who already appreciate you.
11:55 Exactly! My awakening from the general dogma that comes from the wokesters was how rigid their conceptions of culture and even to an extent culture are. It's like they adopted the 19th century notions of culture, which they oppose, but in the process of opposing those notions adopted the notions themselves. It's utterly crazy how ostensibly they claim to adhere to the social constructionist view of reality, but the lesson they take from that is not the mushiness of all concepts, but to try to rigidify them, even if that is hopelessly impossible, unless you FORCE everyone to adhere to your conceptions of such concepts.
Thank you for a really great interview. Discovered your channel recently. Hard to find two people who have not become ideologically possessed in one place these days. Might have to watch it again!
Addressing that particular bit about a fictional character in a book expressing a viewpoint that is not necessarily the author's (as if "staying in your lane is not an expression of halfwits and wannabe tyrants, dangerous imbeciles...) it suddenly struck me (as a lifelong reader of many books, diverse as all get-out). That those who protest and project and rail against a creative mind at work - are literally, and I mean quite that - too stupid to read. They are incapable of letting go of their own deep inner turmoil, the boiling stew of anger. angst and chaotic ideology, to actually focus, read and understand a work of literature, depending on 87 thousand virtue signals of "correctness" that it otherwise must possess. They must then become reduced to the consumption of comic books, and we're not quite sure they could handle even that. I presume that one day in our future, we may witness, not a bonfire of the vanities, but a bonfire closer to those of Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 (only not quite for the same reasoning of philosophical malfeasance). Which author, of any gendered expression or any coloration, could conform to such a perfectly controlled line of literary single-mindedness? And why would they ever be published? Even that 19 year-old with the twitter account would shun it like the plague that it is.
Thanks but would be nice if you could follow up on some of the interesting ideas she mentioned. For example, when she spoke about certain leftist emotions being substitutes for others, it would have been nice to get some examples.
Well done! Haven’t watch an interview like this for a long time. We won’t see a kind of interview on BBC any more, instead BBC only feed us with a fake news and the biased opinions.
This is a vindictive time to be alive, the establishment is totally against the indigenous white European.I fervently hope that we can stop giving these ideas the steam of publicity and just ignore these policy's that always put us at a disadvantage. They are really the ramblings of mad people, and should be judged on their merit as ideas. The problem we have though is the fact that none of these anti western saboteurs would ever debate these things openly,In that regard the whole movement is cowardly and unjust and the antithesis of our once great way of life.We are A GREAT COUNTRY
Is one not allowed to make an honest, and “critical” appraisal of one’s country…or one’s religion, or ones employer etc. for that matter. Without being branded unpatriotic, narcissistic and insincere? Whatever happened to the “libertarian” who promoted freedom of thought to the point of “rebellion" in part 1 of the interview? Would Lionel be so harsh towards North Koreans, Iranians, or Russians, who so criticize their countries? Like her, I detest the extreme left, but I equally detest the opposite extreme. Both are the enemies of justice and liberty, and blind to their own prejudices and hypocrisy. Why does no-one want to occupy the middle ground? Alone, if necessary.
When she talks about the lefty notion of "stay in you lane", why is it only one way? The recent casting of a black person to play Anne Boleyn is just one example of this hypocrisy.
For many years U S colleges taught the political views of Saul Alinsky and the odd perspectives on Culture and Religion of Mercea Eliade. Often echoes of these can be caught among journalists in the major news providers and in female politicians , in my humble and prejudiced opinion. My excuse for prejudice is that I am a relic of the War time and Postwar education . in Britain.
Not only does Lionel resemble Katie Hopkins, she is a brave brilliant woman too, no wonder the left and the useful idiots hate herm what an inspiration
This 'diversity' nonsense is driving me (and many others) insane. My God, even in bloody podcasts there must be a wimmins pod or a black pod and very little else, Every tv show now must have many more than it's relative to population quota of black/asian actors. A film set in the High Court with ALL but ONE coloured actor did it for me. Back to books.
I agree. The concept is insulting to all concerned, and the people who are pushing it should be reminded to look past skin colour and what’s between people’s legs and focus on the more important qualities they have; the qualities of their mind and their character! What we have now is a perverse kind of reverse apartheid.
An old school Republican who gives reasons to reject other people and opinions. Note how she rejects 'liberals' for having the very views that she herself entertains!!!!!!!!
I’m mostly in favour of Shriver and her views, but the idea that publishing is benefiting from being essentially the plaything of toffs, publishing the same books every year with different titles is ludicrous. Look where so many the book prizes are going - small indies who take a chance on writers who don’t fit in. The big guys cream off the best writers of small publishing houses so even they know that they aren’t diverse enough. Sorry Lionel, but on that front you are wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong.

Please get on Dr Yaron Brook! He's superb.
This got an uptick within 2 mins!
Great stuff yet again. Earned yourselves a sub!
Thanks Peter
I would be great to see Lionel and Camille Paglia together though the video would have to be slowed down to account for her fast paced talking.
I'd like to hear more about Lionel's background, how she came to live in the UK, how her views were formed. That's what made the Rod Little interview good; you learnt that he had once been on the far left and that he saw his roots as lying outside London.
brilliant interview, thank you.
Great interview.
"Last week" - same shirt, same jacket as in part 1 - haha :-)
There's no way they could ban something like this.
It is wholly narcissistic, bitter, envious, resentful, nihilistic and sadistic in nature!
I double dare you to have Kathy Newman on to defend her interview with Peterson
I can't believe that happened over a year ago! Time flies.
@@MrBannystar Has it really been a year?! I will watch it again for posterity, and because it's hilarious
Are you two related? 😉
Hopefully she'll be better briefed by her producer next time....
Course they are. "Kunt" is the German wing of the Kent family.
There is such a thing as culture. To deny that is absurd.
Even that 19 year-old with the twitter account would shun it like the plague that it is.
your colleagues have traded liberty for a safe space, that's why other writers keep their heads below the parapet
Succinctly put.
At the base of it all is pathological depths of envy and resentment!
Thanks but would be nice if you could follow up on some of the interesting ideas she mentioned. For example, when she spoke about certain leftist emotions being substitutes for others, it would have been nice to get some examples.
Agreed and why these interviews need to be longer.
I like her.
Commsense has gone out the window lately .
She's interesting because she's a democrat who calls out the insanity of the left.
My excuse for prejudice is that I am a relic of the War time and Postwar education . in Britain.
Where did the comment go from 'Matthew Rowe' calling other commenters on here 'scum' and falsely accusing them of stuff?
I think i understand what the euphemism "group" actually refers to in this interview.....Refreshing stuff
Creeping Totalitarian Fascism from the left.
You're describing England too.
This stuff probably sounded alarmist and fare fetched to a lot of us way back in 2019
Emotional falsity pretty much covers the British political apologetics.
Great channel!
Now I understand why the democrats think that way. Thanks Lionel !
An old school Republican who gives reasons to reject other people and opinions. Note how she rejects 'liberals' for having the very views that she herself entertains!!!!!!!!
Stay in your own lane!? Have they not heard of overtaking.
I'd love to know what she thinks of all this covid hysteria. And of Biden, of course.
Dey don't need no edyookayshin
A furious 'fiction' faction in pursuit of fiction. F** k!
Ha Ha AAVE 😄
Only utter fools would propose such a nonsensical idea!
I demand that black women stop straightening their hair and dying their hair blonde because that is appropriately my European culture!!
