The British Army winter bag, Jim, army surplus and it's getting used in any weather because I'm tight-fisted Jock git :) . Thanks for the video, mate, top notch as always :) .
I have 2 bags. One is a Vango (something or other) which I bought about 15 years ago. The salesman assured me that it was good enough for Everest, and maybe it is, if you’re a Yeti. On the recommendation of another UA-cam channel, I got myself a “Snugpak Elite 4” which is a bag I like but again, when the temperature really drops, I find that I need some sort of ‘blanket’ over it to stay cosy… that’s my only gripe. When I say ‘my only gripe’, it was also a tad expensive so that’s my only other gripe.
I have the medium/jungle bags also. You can actually fit the jungle bag on the outside (same as you can with the Carinthia versions), so that the bug net is on the outside of the medium bag - keeping it away from your face. I also personally find it easier to do up the side zip on the outer first - followed by the centre zip on the inner. Much easier than the other way around.
Very similar range of bags. For summer bags I have the OEX Fathom 200 and the Snugpak Travelpak 2 with the mosquito net, but to be truthful high summer I tend to use my Snugpak Jungle Blanket more. Spring and autumn is when I use the DD Jura2 And winter the Eurohike Adventurer 300 and if it gets really cold I use the oex Furnace +8 liner and the Jungle blanket aswell. I haven't done a great deal on silly cold camping so combining what I have does the trick. Great video Al and good to see you looking better.
Thanks Dave. This season lark, what is 2 season? spring/summer, summer/fall or fall/winter? Maybe spring and fall only. It makes no sense to me. Just need an advised temp. 🙄
@@frogmaster83 Agreed buddy I brought a cheapy, labelled as 4 season but only when I used a fleece bag liner did it come close to that season rating all the best Dave
Alright JB , hope you good . That was interesting mate . I have the snugpak jungle bag and the Euro hike hybrid . Love them both but have had problems with the bug mesh zip on it so got the lightweight army jungle bag which is warmer though bulkier and sturdier . Also went for the army medium bag which seemed excellent but the teeth on the zip kept coming apart ( you win some you lose some ) ended up splurging on the carinthia defense 4 which seems excellent and will hopefully last a long time ( expensive though ) . Haven't used it yet but hopefully it'll do what it says on the tin . Take it easy JB 👍
Yeah the Jura 2 is deffo not warm down near the 3 degree mark... so glad I sold mine when I did for a good price too. I wouldn't want to be in it at -5 that footbox makes your feet cold. I tell you what though, my OEX leviathan 900 thing is ace... love it. ❤
I love a good comparison vid, I'm so glad I didn't get the DD one for winter camping, I hummed and hared about it for weeks and ended up with a winter thermarest bag, would be nice to have a centre zip but I am managing pretty well hammocking with a side zip.
@@frogmaster83 God yes! My last camp out I'd got my bed all organised before I realised my bag zip was the wrong side to my hammocks net zip, ughhhh! Had start again. What a pain in the arse!
Cool video, due to mainly 95% at present, snugpak topquilt ,match with there underquilt, late spring to early autumn, jura 2 xl ,completely agree ,down to 3-4'c , but used in conjunction with either the snugpak top quilt (-9'c) and jura with a softie suit (-6'c and toasty), but looking for a good multi system for hammock and ground/bivi bag setups, so looking at getting the the British army modular system, so as you have the 3 "season" and get the thinner summer bag, so the flexibility for a dodgy climate, completely agree on just having a honest temp rating system, but dont think the civilian market would, as alot of bags would be shown as crap basically, or not suitable, good one to get thinking on, good luck health and safe travels, cheers craig
@@frogmaster83 sounds weird but ,apart from I prefer autumn/winter/spring both wildcamping and fishing, I keep wishing for really bad weather, proper snow, real cold etc, so I can test my gear to its limits, would love to do a proper 'frozen butt hang', as shug goes too, maybe just me though lol, cheers
You're quite right, '3 to 4' season. :) But, I've always taken that to mean the two coldest seasons, the two warmer at your peril. :) I have a Vango Nitestar 250, which is bulky and warm, but too hot for even an average summer night. I've taken that to mean. 2.5 seasons. Yes, about right. You can open them out and use as a duvet, when too hot - but never tried. Have you?
Hi Ray. The Nightstar 375 is a beast. Its mummy shape and not a full zip so could not open it right out. If its warm weather I tend to use my poncho liner. Its just like a light quilted blanket. Regards JB.
I got one of those british army medium bags for £15, sure the loft isnt as good a newer one but ive got the jungle bag aswel (which i also got for £15) if its proper cold. Pretty much unbeatable price to vaule ratio.
Hi, thanks for the breakdown. Sometimes a classic bag, like your military bag, can be awesome to keep you warm and great on the budget. In the US I look for tech was was relevant in the 80's or 90's that are in good shape still and even though they are heavier to some degree, they work out great. I picked up two "SlumberJacks" that are made here in the US in the thrift shop and with proper under-clothing, they keep me very warm and are temp rated around freezing. Marketing now is certainly deceptive! Great observations! How do you store your bags, JB? Thanks!
Hi David. The is some great bargains out there if you look. Normally when I am not using my bags, they live on hangers and are hung up in the spare bedroom. Much to the disgust of my wife. Regards JB.
I have a thermarest down bag for dry conditions in winter 200 quids worth if the weather is damp I use a snugpack expander 5 which is synthetic in winter I also have a couple of quilts that I can use In the hammock I take not much notice of recommended ratings I have a dura 2 disappointed to be honest

Hi Alan glad to see your OK now great vlog and love the t-shirt.👍
Hi Jerry. I am doing ok thanks mate. Kate got me the shirt for my 50th birthday the other year, 😁
Nice review, and nice Tshirt. Agree about the temp ranges always misleading.
It would be nice just to have a simple "average" temp marker.

The Elite 4 is more or less the same as the Army medium bag. Have you tried a fleece liner in it when its cold?

I like the 5 seasons approach, although my 3 season bag only gets used if it below 0c or I cook.
Its difficult for me now. My body temp is all over the place. I tend to go one season warmer, with the option of unzipping. 😁

I must admit the zip on my jungle bag is a bit fiddley. Not needed it yet luckily. The Defence 4 is a good bag, a mate of mine has one. Regards JB.

Nice chat, I'm in the market at the moment. My Softie 9 is starting to feel a bit tired.
The British army medium weight bag would be the closest out of my bags to the Softie 9. ua-cam.com/video/AKkT71C7Hmo/v-deo.html
