I copied your Yakima set up on my 07 Avalanche. It works great but would like space under the rtt for extra storage. So I am going to try and copy this set up. Thank you very much for posting this.
Well, tbh, I’m going to be redoing this one too sometime this spring. Just a few things I’ve come to be annoyed with that I plan to correct with the second design.
Discovered one obstruction this past weekend while camping. One of the side window awning rods can’t be used due to proximity to the roof basket. Other than that though, it’s great!
Just bought an 07 avalanche and im exited to start messing with it. You have a very nice setup! If i may, i would sugest getting yout 3rd brake light signal from one of your rear tailights and not have to run the wireing on your sail panels. Nice job on the math for notching your angles, that would drive me crazy trying to figure them out.
I considered running the wire from a taillight, but it was honestly very easy to tie into the factory third brake light and run the wiring behind the panel. But, someone else may want to run it from the taillight, so it’s certainly a good suggestion.
The bars are actually the roof bars from a Tahoe/Yukon that I cut down to work with the length of the Avalanche roof. The basket is made by ROLA and I ordered it off Amazon.
Since making the rack, there are a couple things I want to change, the rear mounting location being one. I’m building a new rack in the spring and it will mount exactly how you’re suggesting, as well as put the tent just a little higher as well.
@@takeroadslesstraveled6505 if you wanted a front point you can easily remove the triangle shaped drain screens on each side and probably fabricate mounting points and a bracket. I was going to explore that spot as well for my own project.
Would you be willing to make these and ship and sell them? I think a lot of us would be willing to buy I did your initial Build but I’m also used it to put a bike rack on for my mountain bikes however I also use it for work your current set up would be perfection
Shipping would be a killer due to size/weight. I’m actually considering selling this one and making a new one. Just little things that after having it on I’m seeing can be improved on.
I think I would just use a wide foot for the rack on the topside of the bed cover maybe with a rubber pad under the feet so not to damage the cover and then use something like a ratchet tie-down strap from the feet on the topside to go down and around and under the cover to secure it down to the cover that way you wouldn't have to worry about any drilling or any extra tools if you ever do needed to remove it. Honestly I don't know why not just to use the Yakima system and extended upward, unless it's just too unstable for that.
The issue with just going up with the Yakima setup is the number of mounting points. The more you have, the more points of potential failure you have. Plus, the question of HOW you go up using that setup arises. I do get your point on not damaging the covers though and drilling into them was a tough decision for me. But, there are things about this rack I’m not a big fan of and I’m going to make a new one this spring.
You said in your last video you said the panels only hold 250 pounds. I’m 250 pounds and that means my wife can’t sleep in the rty with me. So I guess this is t a good setup for the average couple trying to go camping together.
250lbs each. Gotta listen to all the details. Myself and my dad (about 200lbs each) slept in the RTT (another 100lbs) for multiple nights on a camping trip and everything was just fine.
I love the sound of a nice mig weld! 5:50

@@takeroadslesstraveled6505 do you care to share what you found annoying about this design so i can take that into consideration.
@@takeroadslesstraveled6505 I will be looking for the updates on this!! thanks.
It looks great! Wondering what it looks like with the tent being open, Any obstructions ?

Not uplight, not taillights….
But the trailer plug 🔌
It’s made for additional lighting.
And when the tents 🏕 not there
It unplugs
This is awesome! Can you tell me about the rack you have on the roof of the Avalanche?

Thank you!
Can a person get on top of the bed with the cover on
Should have put a picture of it all popped out and and set up
Looks awesome greatttt build Mann !!definitely putting this on my 07
Did you consider making the rear support bolt in where the grab handles are? Then you would be able to remove at least 2 of the panels

@@takeroadslesstraveled6505 Did you ever end up building another rack using the grab handle areas?
Any concerns with water leaking through the holes you put in the cover?
I added neoprene washers under the rack plates and there have been no issues.
What yakima system did you use i would like to buy one for my 03 avi

Can I buy your old Yakima set up?
Sorry, sold it right after this video was posted. I am going to build a new rack this spring though, so this one will be up for grabs.
What roof rack do you have on there?
It's made by ROLA. I bought it off Amazon.
@@takeroadslesstraveled6505 could you link it? i see a rola rack on amazon but it looks narrower than what yours looks like

Shipping price would be ridiculous

Wanna sell you yak bar set up?
Sold it before this even got posted. Thanks though.
