I for one will wait for X3D no mater what. If they announce it now or later makes no difference. I really doubt that potential X3D buyers would jump at any initial non-X3D offerings despite any cost warnings or clarity on timing, which no company is going to disclose in any case.

the problem is that with V-cache, you need to know that the games you're playing will be accelerated by it. Without that guarantee, you may be better off sticking with vanilla, as the higher clock speeds are better in some games. V-cache is cool, but it's not always the way, even as a gamer.

    • @asm_nop
      @asm_nop 4 місяці тому

I was upgrading from an overclocked 8-core Xeon on X79. Ancient, I know, but it held up surprisingly well. Despite Zen 2 and 3 being massively successful, I skipped the 5800X3D on principle. I didn’t want to beta-test the stacking of temperature-sensitive SRAM on a high-power CCD, especially at the end of AM4. So when the 7800X3D came out, I jumped on it and built a whole new rig. Best CPU purchase I could have ever made. Now what I want to see for Zen 5 is AMD releasing a 12-16 core where both chiplets have V-cache. With the improved fabric speed, that would be insane.

It goes against AMDs interest to announce their full lineup so early with prices. Allows Intel more info to price more competitively and will lead to problems if any changes happen half a year or more later. Not announcing gives AMD much more flexibility.

1.) A 9600X3D would age horribly with many modern games already using more than 6 cores and for AMD it is the same cost as a 9800X3D. Those few CCDs with 1-2 defective cores can be easily be sold for 6 cores non VCache for office use.
2.) The 9600 non X sounds like the 65W office version. I am pretty sure both 9600 and 9600X exist, but not sure if both will launch at computex.
3.) The reason why Zen4 reception was so poor was because boards were 300$ compared to 100$ Zen4. DDR5 also still was more expensive.

Same as Netflix wondering why people don't watch their new shows. Because you're going to cancel it, so what's the point in investing time in a multi-season arc from a book trilogy, when we know you'll cancel it? Just announce you bought the trilogy so you're making the whole thing and have done. If we had a reasonable amount of information about the upcoming hardware, we could make better decisions about what to invest in and most of us only want to do this every two years (but actually don't really want to do it because it's a hassle, and can't afford to, so probably upgrade every 4-5 years). The only bit that's really easy to upgrade most of us care about is a graphics card, and even then, who seriously gets a new one every year or two?

I have no desire for more cores at this time, 8 is really solidly overkill for gaming, let the games catch up and see slight benefits from 10 and 12 cores (whenever that will be?). I would love to see, a unified "High end desktop" platform in many years to come where there's chipsets like today, but you need the X _ _ 70 or whatever, to get the threadripper replacements, that would be really really nice, and maybe a return of quad channel memory while they're at it, economies for scale with a single slightly large socket, not a threadripping beast size, that'd be cool.

    • @Hugh_I

Very very likely zen6 will get a core count bump. From what Tom has leaked, zen6 will have more than 2 variants of chiplets, while the "standard" zen6 core variant presumably will be 16c/CCD, the Zen6C version 32c/CCD. They're also working on a "client dense" variant, presumably for desktop Ryzen. Zen6 will also rearrange the chiplet layout (on-die stacking I think?), so it is not very clear how the Ryzen desktop config might look like, but I would say up to 32 cores of whatever is perfectly reasonable to expect (They can theoretically go higher with two CCXes, but at some point the two memory channels won't be enough to feed that many cores).

AMD should do themselves a favor and axe the 9900X3D from the lineup entirely. The 7900X3D never sold all that well no matter the price, and it’s really not a mystery as to why. If you’re strictly gaming, the 7800X3D is the clear and obvious choice from both a price and performance standpoint, and nobody who wants the best of gaming and productivity performance was ever going to buy it over the 7950X3D. There isn’t really a market in between that a 12 core V-cache SKU appeals to.
I agree with you, Tom, that AMD should announce Zen5X3D alongside Zen5 at Computex. If they wish to wait till after CES 2025 to actually launch it, then perhaps they can just announce the 9800X3D and 9950X3D at Computex with a Q1’2025 timeframe to give people an idea as to when they will be available, then formally unveil specs and prices at CES with availability shortly thereafter.
I think an initial Zen5 lineup along these lines will be would be ideal:
    9600X @ $250
    9700X @ $400
    9900X @ $500
    9950X @ $700
Then, along with the formal unveiling of the 9800X3D @ $450 and 9950X3D @ $700 at CES, AMD could announce an official price cut to the rest of the lineup to help combat Arrow Lake and make room for X3D in the lineup; 9600X @ $220, 9700X @ $350, 9900X @ $475, 9950X @ $650.
I like the idea of a 6 core 9600X3D at $300, but I believe it would be a mistake to launch alongside the initial lineup, as I think it would jeopardize putting the 9800X3D in a weird spot. Instead, I think AMD would be wise to hold off until around Q3’2025, which will likely coincide with the gradual downward drift in sale prices on the rest of Zen5. By this point, I could see the 9600X commonly sold for around $200, and the 9800X3D likely around $400. Here, the 9600X3D would slot in perfectly at $300, and I believe it would be well received. It’ll also be at a time when many early AM5 adopters will be thinking about an upgrade, as they’ll be approaching the 3-year mark since they jumped to AM5. It would also appeal to the mid-range consumers who built their PCs around the start of the pandemic or just before, who are likely sitting on Intel 9th and 10th Gen rigs, or Zen 2/3. They’ll be going on five years since they last upgraded their CPU, and the 9600X3D would be a perfect mid-range option at $300.
That’s just my two cents on how AMD should approach Zen5 as a whole, as I think there are some marketing lessons to be learned from Zen4, and Arrow Lake is going to be serious competition that needs to taken seriously, so AMD cannot afford to sit on their laurels and treat this like they did Zen3.

4:30 I dont know about average consumers, but me, and where i work, dont like mixed core architectures. Either give me a 6 P core 12400, or give me a 24 E core 12430E roughly the same die area, difference performanec profiles One would kill in homelab, the other kills in general desktop use

I have a 7950X3D. If the 9950X3D is just "a copy paste" with 15% IPC uplift and a 5% clock bump... I'm not biting. If, however, AMD launches an 8 Zen5X3D + 16 Zen5c part I WILL bite. Even if it's $900. A 20% reduction in compile times is nice, but not something I'm going to shell out $600 for. A 50-60% reduction in compile times IS worth shelling out a lot for.

That config would be punching B holes all day long...

How about a processor with two 16 core Zen 5c CCDs i.e. a 32C/64T monster CPU...............might be very useful for VMs.

@APU-iGPU I switched to a 7800x3d from a 5900x and I frequently run 3 VMs. These cpus are just so fast they run anything I throw at them. When I have to program equipment in production plants, my laptops just feel so slow now. I would love a dual ccx high density cpu, though. I would get that just to test.

@@charlesg5085 Good to hear that. I assume that 3D V-Cache might be one of the reason behind the VMs running that fast.
And if AMD has plans to launch 32C/64T processor this gen or by Zen 6, then I would happily buy it for simulation, testing, and running multiple VMs at the same time.

"A 50-60% reduction in compile times IS worth shelling out a lot for" is > 2X speed (more than 100% speed uplift). Not sure you will get that even with Zen6.
