  • Practicing my aerobatics routine on a beautiful day south of Tāmaki Makaurau in Aotearoa New Zealand. Aircraft is ZK-SAX callsign Chipmunk 51, owned by a syndicate of pilots at the New Zealand Warbirds Association.
Routine starts as I cross the display line (dirt road) about a minute in. Start 2000 feet / 120 knots and min altitude 1500 feet.
Figures are 1/4 clover R, 1/4 clover L, stall turn R, wingover, aileron roll, wingover, barrel roll, reverse 1/2 Cuban, aileron roll then a max rate turn.
Shot on a GoPro Hero 6 Black using a GoPro Bite Mount. The Chipmunk's cockpit is pretty snug and the canopy frame are very close to the pilot. I've previously tried a head mount (just showed canopy frame) and a chest mount (just showed instrument panel) but this one was just right. Mount tethered via a lanyard to prevent loose objects in the cockpit.

Reminds me of air experience flights from my time in the ATC during the 1970s.
    Lovely.

Indeed... We went to Edinburgh in the late '60's (Turnhouse) and summer camps at Waddington and Thorney Island, superb memories.........

I had a few flights in a Chipmunk out of RAF Woodvale, Southport from 1968-1971 when I was in the RAF Cadets Corps at secondary school. Great memories.

2nd that, though early 90's, with the Air Cadets but I can't remember where it was from. Was just showing my 17 year old the video of this, gliders and a Hawker Hs125, all with the Cadets, excellent memories to have.

Mick Eyre -this brought back memories from my time with the Air Training Corps the chipmunk was used to give air experience flights to cadets and staff and every time I got the opportunity I opted for aerobatics and loved every minute. All my flights were with the air experience flight at RAF Finningley during the 1980's I'm 74 now but would still do it now given the chance.

Me too, but I'm a decade younger.
I recall one occasion when a kid vomited during a roll and he decorated the inside of the cockpit canopy.

Back in the late 70s, I was a member of the Air Cadet Section at Magdalen College School, Oxford, UK. I was 15 at the time and wanted to follow in my father's footsteps and join the RAF. Sadly, that never happened, but I did get to fly in a Chipmunk piloted by my then Geography teacher Sqdrn leader F.J.Barrett who had flown Vampires in action in Korea. In the classroom he was somewhat boring, but in an aero plane he was fantastic! So exciting to be with him on the first time I had ever flown. All those maneuvers were performed including the "falling leaf". Sadly he is now deceased. But I will never forget my first experience of being more than 1000 feet off the ground with a brave man.

My uncle started training on these in Canada in the 1960s when he signed up with the Royal Malaysian Air Force.
