      This is why I'd always go vintage over these gimmicky modern products. I've been looking at a full set of mid-range, 1970s Technics components on Marketplace for considerably less than $300. Absolutely no comparison. I'm no audiophile but I wouldn't touch something like this at a quarter of the price.

    I found it bizarre that there is only one loudspeaker provided when you're going to be playing stereo discs !

      I'm not sure what they offer in their shop now but when this was a Kickstarter project you could order it with two speakers, they can be connected to better stereo.

    It sounds OK, but it looks super flimsy and unstable. That light tracking force may seem like a good thing, but not when it causes the tonearm to easily skip and skate.

    I noticed on the company's website that the nearly US$300 price tag is after discount. The normal asking price is apparently $370! That's criminal! It might be neat if it were a third of the price, but it really should have a headphone jack and/or line out on it

    I have Just subscribed to your channel and like the fact that you give good honest reviews on these cheap record players and yes I have just bought a suitcase record player from Digit now and the sound quality is better than I thought for £38.99. After playing a couple of records, I am going to buy some external speakers to see if the sound quality improves it a bit.

    This is by far the best record player I have ever seen bar none...I need one today....would have preferred one yesterday but I was not available till today...My friend Matt got one a week ago but hes broken his already because he is so hefty...for me the best part is the speaker..only negative is not having had the opportunity to purchase one of these later...have fun mate..keep smiling..lol....oh...I did wonder if using this player with a record weight might improve the skip back quality...ah well gotta go and comb my hair whats left of it..lol..it looks like the original starship enterprise from underneath

    I admire your admiration of this product. I can't imagine EVER wanting something that unstable, with the tonearm hanging off the edge and the wobbly surface because it isn't flush with the speaker... it looks like the product wasn't completely designed before it went to manufacturing, or a kid drew the blueprints or something... Fascinating, but no thank you!!

    I have this same unit unit in yellow. Its not a bad little machine. The Bluetooth speaker is stereo and you can connect or other devices to it. It has great sound dont get me wrong. The album play is great as long as you dump it. If you touch record while there is a brief wow and flutter. Its too bad the player not be rechargeable. Using speaker battery.

  • @JermaineJagger
    @JermaineJagger 5 місяців тому +4

    Yikes this one's kinda awful especially for the price!! That tonearm seems superflimsy, the uneven gap(which seems it would have been easy to design flushed with the turntable) AND the placement of the power outlet is a weird bad design choice..its basically on the front! Like where could you sit this near a wall where a 12" record wouldnt hit the wall? Bizarre how this wasnt better planned & designed.. especially considering there's so many bluetooth turntables on the market now at a better price & more practical design for sure.

    The only question I had is can you pair the TT part to a different Bluetooth device? To a big set of speakers or a Bluetooth receiver which would then allow getting to the audio signals. And of course BT headphones or buds?

    • @thomasseidel5700
      @thomasseidel5700 4 місяці тому

      You can pair it to anything but from my expericence need to be VERY patient. 😅 The turntable has no display and so the average speaker or headphones also don't. It's quite tricky to connect it then. Both devices may find each other... and may also not. Pairing with my Marshall Acton takes about 2 to 15 attemps to pair once they are disconnected.

      Many of those old Project 3 records were produced by a musician named Enoch Light, who hired the best studio musicians of the day, many of them big band veterans, to make records like this.
      The tune you're hearing is called, "Caravan," a Duke Ellington hit (I can't remember offhand if he wrote it or if it's a Billy Strayhorn composition.)
      That doesn't answer your question, but I thought I'd let you know that anytime you see a record on this label, it's going to be along the lines of what you're hearing, unless it's specifically themed otherwise.

    For that price get a CTONE. Far better quality , full aluminium and glass plus stroboscopic speed control and a 16 h battery.
    Or for half the price the soundburger , but a bit more finicky than the ctone and yes havethem both as well as a lot of old highquality ones.
    But for taking at work or such its either the ctone or the soundburger, not perfect but still great quality for transportable ones.
    Oh and the ctone has a regulated anti skating while the soundburger stylus will go all the way to the middle.

    It may have good sound and an interesting design - but, I think it's a bit impractical for most. I'd guess playing singles (45's or 33's) will be best for this one really. Although, the scraping across the label was a bit of an issue there, I felt. It would be easy to knock the records and the stylus and cause a skip though; especially for a more clumsy person, such as me!

    Did it ever occur to you that the piece that holds the arm in place should be put over the spindle to stabilize 12” records?

    I would take the speaker off and put it in my bathroom while taking a shower, sitting on the sink counter top. I like that detachable speaker. I don't like that the record is exposed to dust. I have a 1byone suitcase record player where the cover closes completely over the record. This machine you have is unique, but $300? Not for me.

  • @thomasseidel5700
    @thomasseidel5700 4 місяці тому

    Being a Kickstarter supporter of this I already own it several years and still like it, but it has like half a dozen of cons which weren't even mentioned here. 😜 To me the tone arm seems too light, maybe also the tracking weight. As there is no real plate here, the needle tends to skip and jump fast when the record ain't in perfect shape. (So I would be interested in that orange plate you use in between, maybe that would help with that problem.) Also the motor to me doesn't seem to be on perfect speed. When you have long sounds like in lots of electronic music or electric guitar ballads or whatever, it often sounds slurring. Don't know if maybe they fixed that in the meantime. Also I must say: The speaker is great and so is the output of the player, but together the sound for me is too weak, espcially talking about bass. When the speaker is connected to the phone etc. with a nice equalizer it sound much more powerful. And also if the record player is connected to a speaker with adjustable bass/treble it sound much better. But that leads to one of the wort problems of the HYM Duo: It pairs fast and without problems to it's owen speaker(s), but when you try to pair it to other speakers or headphines, that can really drive you crazy! Sometimes it doesn't pair at all, then it pairs to some device you don't know of (maybe in the neighbours place?) and most often it takes like 10 or more attempts to connect to the speaker you want it to connect to. Last but not least: In adverts HYm tends to show the Duo as an outdoor player but it still needs a power line. Whenever I put my finger on that telling them they shouldn't hide the cable or pretend it will work on a picnic in the meadow, they told me it's planned to add a battery. But I think they won't anymore as just today they launched the HYM toGO which is an all different device but REALLY for outdoor use, with battery inside.

  • @luvmyrecords

    For what it is, the price really isn't so terrible, but I would rather spend the money on a better turntable, like the AT that plays 78s and has pitch control.
    Still, if it were less expensive, I'd love to have one as a portable.
    Also, the fact that it's 100% manual would allow me to play things like Hip Pocket records, or those 3" records sold on RSD, and other novelty records. (I think the AT fits that bill, yes?)
    Not having any sort of line out, however, means I'd have to do sommersaults beyond my capability to record anything from it to my Zoom recorder (unless I did it live, like I did as a kid with my little cassette recorder.😂
    As to what I'd transfer, I'm thinking specifically about those little novelty records whose content cannot be found elsewhere, and would not hold up well to repeated playing.)
    Not a deal breaker, but it would be nice.

      Same, and mine aren't even particularly rare, valuable, or well-preserved. Stability is surely a basic fundamental attribute for a record player, and they an't even get that right? I hate those undersized platters at the best of times, but this one looks like it would fall over if you so much as looked at it, sending the stylus skittering across the disc leaving a lovely big scratch 😢

    Good review for a very (!) bad record player. I'd even go as far as saying the latest Crosley Cruiser you reviewed is way better. I consider this a glorified, but clunky Sound Burger. Those at least stand kinda stable, plus they provide a rubber clamp for the record, so it doesn't slip*. It's just too delicate to handle. There is a reason why the basic shape for record players hasn't changed in well over a hundred years: Because it works, and it is user friendly. So one has to spend far too much money for a bad record player that fights you, whenever you try to do something with it. Nah thanks.
    *edit: I just saw on the website you linked to, that the tonearm rest doubles as a record clamp.

    Too gimmicky, too expensive, and the 0.9% wow and flutter is unacceptable - ESPECIALLY at that $300 price. The designers of this piece of crap were banking heavily on the 'oooh, it's DIFFERENT!' vibe to attract buyers.
    This thing places in the price range of a basic U-Turn Orbit, which is a far superior turntable.

    • @jerryspann8713
      @jerryspann8713 5 місяців тому

      The Sound Burger is $199, and a bluetooth speaker of that quality usually goes for about $100. So, it's a fair price. Just need to fine tune a few problems.

    • @xaenon
      @xaenon 5 місяців тому

      I'e@@jerryspann8713 I've zero interest in a sound burger or any other gimmick record player, especially low-effort trash like this.
      This is what I see: a goofy design featuring a bodged platter drive, with a magnetic cartridge and a crummy bluetooth speaker.
      A couple of years ago I threw $100 for a Target Heyday turntable, brand new. Far superior unit, and it has Bluetooth out, too. The Heyday has feedback-regulated speed control, aluminum platter, and came with an AT3600 cartridge that I upgraded to a VM95. The Target turntable is no longer available, but Best Buy sells a functionally identical unit in their 'Insignia' line. it's $129 at the time I write this. Far shy of that $300 figure.
      If I'm interested in Bluetooth, I have a Sony SD/USB/CD/Bluetooth/AM/FM boombox that will utterly smoke the speaker this thing has. Seldom use Bluetooth with a record player - that, too, is largely just a gimmick.
      And this thing isn't even really a 'portable'. If I want portable... well, that's what the boombox is for. For portable use, record players rank high as the least convenient format.

    Forget $300, I wouldn't pay $30 for this. With its shape it's not even as stable as most cheap record players. Using Bluetooth to play a record instead of simple, latency free wiring with no digital compression is a huge mistake, too. Hard pass.

    Wow! and Flutter! Seems like a really annoying device to use.

    Oh dear, another solution to a problem that never existed. Audiophiles, even beginner vinyl fans must be holding their heads in hands and holding back the tears. If it were 50 bucks, fair enough, but seriously 300 bucks? The wow and flutter was very noticeable, no support under the record would be entertaining for warped discs! I understand them not putting an audio output socket on there, the speaker I guess might hide some of the rumble, noise and not so great audio reproduction. Even that speaker arrangement is just wrong, nearly 30 seconds to pair each time, delay between the stylus and audio sterilises the whole vinyl experience. It's just too flimsy and fragile to be a practical vinyl player, and completely takes away the immediacy and fun of vinyl by trying to use digital electronics to add novelty.... no no no... sorry this is just wrong. I feel for anyone who buys this.

    It’s really sad that companies are making these stupid products that are just wasting space and will just be sitting in the warehouse. They should make things that are actually good instead of stuff like this that is mediocre at best. And it’s a Bluetooth connection to itself? What’s the point of it being a record player? it’s going through the digital domain anyway!!

    This may be the worst record player I've seen.

    Truly terrible industrial design. It really offends the eye. Unnecessarily flimsy. Get a proper table with a bluetooth out, if you really must use Bluetooth at all.
    A big fail, in my view.
