    Blade Runner simply is a masterpiece. Hans Zimmer's Dune is a masterpiece as well, just like the soundtrack to the old version of Dune, made by Toto.

    Hi Lilly, The Q n A questioners asked the BIGGEST question I wanted to ask you: "How do you manage and prioritize so many various types of creative projects". Great to hear your answers! Looks like you're well on your way to 10K subs already!

    • @LillySchwartz
      @LillySchwartz  Рік тому +1

      Dealing with all those creative projects is like herding cats 😅 Somehow stuff gets done, but never as fast as I would like and some things always have to wait. I always get there in the end though! Glad you enjoyed the video! And yeah, over 6K already, amazing how fast that went! I’m almost a bit glad that it slowed down a bit again, because I have things planned for 10K subs that aren’t quite ready yet 😅

    I'd be up in the ceiling there putting in sound proofing pads!!! That was loud!!! Really good video, Lilly!! It'll be great to see more of your videos, especially the photography ones when you get around to doing them. I should get back out with my cameras and get some more pics. I've had a roll of Ultramax in my Minolta Hi-Matic for the last month and haven't gone out to shoot it!! In that time, I've gotten two lenses for my 5Xi (Minolta), a 100--300mm zoom and a 50 mm f1.7, which turned up today. So, I'll have to get around to using them. One good thing with the hiatus, though, is my film stocks are slowly creeping back up. Oh, and congrats on 5000!!! Now for 10K, then 20K...😊

    • @LillySchwartz
      @LillySchwartz  Рік тому +2

      And that was with at least some sound dampening! Usually I find it quite relaxing, but in a storm it's hard to hear yourself talk under the roof! I'm looking forward to having the darkroom sorted out as well so that I can get out and explore a bit with my camera as well. I haven't really used the opportunity to look around much yet, because I don't want to end up with tons of rolls to develop. And new lenses sound nice! That's always cool! I have a new lens as well but it's for filming only and a duplicate of a lens I had already but that had the wrong mount for my speed booster!
      Thank you for the Congratulations! Appreciated! 10K isn't far off now, I believe. Just a matter of time!

    Great video Lilly, really enjoyed the questions and your answers. Thanks for answering my question and I think now that I understand some of the scope of music theory (akin to having looked at the table of contents of a book) I realise I need to learn it, but your overall philosophy on this resonates with me for sure. Thanks again for sharing and congrats again on the 5k... now 6.2k and climbing :)

    • @LillySchwartz
      @LillySchwartz  Рік тому +1

      Thank you again! I think learning theory is definitely worthwhile, it helps to know the rules so that you can break them in creative ways. You don’t need all of it though. Most of contemporary music only uses a fraction of that massive book and does just fine with that 😀 Scale modes and chord modes on modern sequencers make these things a lot easier too. Sometimes it feels like playing the game on easy mode though and they don’t really prepare you for the tough cases. I recently wrote a track where I accidentally changed from one key into another key that was really far away - sequencer lost the key setting halfway through writing it and I ended up with two sections that just would not fit together and I didn’t get why. It kept falling apart, took me ages to figure it out, but when I got it to work I was quite proud of myself. Without theory I never would have managed to fix that one because I wouldn’t even have understood what the problem was. And I certainly would have ended up with a much less interesting track if my sequencer hadn’t tricked me. I kept the key change in the end. If I remember correctly I just snuck another change between those two sections to soften the blow. For situations like those theory is invaluable!

    • @JamesPearson
      @JamesPearson Рік тому

      @@LillySchwartz Ha, yes using the scale modes on sequencers (like my MPC One) definitely feels like 'easy mode' or after typing in a cheat code. But it has unlocked some of the basics for me; before I could hear what worked together, but now I am starting to understand how they do and that means far less trial and error!
      I did a similar thing once where I had two parts of a track in different keys (I think) but it wasn't worth salvaging and so I gave up. If it was better then for sure it might be a good exercise and your solution sounds great!

    • @LillySchwartz
      @LillySchwartz  Рік тому +1

      I usually see my ideas through to the end, even if it doesn’t quite work. There is this phase in the middle of writing a track when it all sounds meh. Especially when it’s not mixed properly. I’d delete every trick if I didn’t push through the meh phase.

      I’m glad you enjoyed it! I definitely love ambient, most of the music I write falls into that genre. I went from post-punk and goth + SciFi soundtracks straight into dark ambient with my tastes and that’s where I stayed a long time. I still fall back into making it too and the next Polarcoaster album will be dark ambient again! I do enjoy the lighter side of it too though. There are a lot more artists I could have mentioned, The Caretaker for example, Bohren & der Club of Gore, Lustmord or the ambient classics, Brian Eno etc, but then I can talk about music for hours and most people just roll their eyes at me when I get going 😂 I thought I better keep it snappy since I’m far more obsessed with music than most people 😅

    • @LillySchwartz
      @LillySchwartz  10 місяців тому

      Now that would be wild if the YT algorithm could be so specific! I mean, I only mention them once in the video and there is one comment where they are mentioned too I believe. It wouldn’t surprise me though if the recommendation was really motivated by that.
      I only have one tattoo so I can relate to your hesitation. I walked around with the idea for 6 years before I went through with it and there is a story to go with it, a series of coincidences while I was pondering the tattoo that finally convinced me to do it. I used to live in Brighton and one day I cross the street listening to Nick Cave and I think to myself, that guy over there looks like Nick Cave with a moustache! I checked online later and yes, he lived there 😂 A few nights later I watched Wings of Desire for the first time. Colour me surprised when Nick Cave appears in there. And who’s there on stage too playing guitar? Blixa. And that kind of thing kept happening until I said, alright alright, I get the tattoo! When the universe is shouting at you very loudly, it’s better to listen! I mean, the Neubauten totally changed the way I think about music, it makes so much sense to have the 1/2 Mensch logo reminding me every day that everything can be music, even power tools. I have pondered other tattoos over the years but it’s the only one that stuck.

    Why have you decided not to use streaming sites for your work, or are you planning to and just haven't released on them yet? Personally, I thought I should be the change I wish to see and not support these rather avaricious streaming platforms through my use, but after a while of indecisiveness, I thought that it's less about the streams for me and more about how many people I can connect with through music, so I got a distributor to be published on all of the main streaming platforms. However I still feel like I compromised some principle about music publishing in the digital age I had, even if it wasn't the most thought out and most likely too idealized.

    • @LillySchwartz
      @LillySchwartz  4 місяці тому +1

      Streaming just doesn’t make any financial sense. I calculated that I’d need 75,000 streams to match 30 sales on bandcamp. That alone pretty much says everything. Since I mainly make experimental music, my stuff simply doesn’t have the mass appeal that would get me those kind of numbers. Recently someone I know who makes similarly experimental music showed me their earnings on Spotify for half a year and it was literally 1$. Minus fees! And of course I wouldn’t particularly enjoy being short changed like that either. It’s a business model that I find pretty toxic for the music industry and everyone earns except the musicians. Because of that I don’t use Spotify at all and on UA-cam it makes much more sense to make video content. People use Spotify as a promotional tool because they can target playlists etc, but for albums it doesn’t make any sense, which is why so many people have practically stopped making albums and only release singles on there. Since I already do the UA-cam thing I get plenty of eyes on my music and in the end streaming availability only discourages people from buying on bandcamp. I will probably do some single releases on Spotify at some point but the album is unlikely to go on there anytime soon. Maybe if my audience grows it could make sense at some point, but right now it would be counterproductive. I don’t listen through streaming either, I just use UA-cam to find new music and whenever I find something I like, I buy the vinyl or on bandcamp. How were your experiences with streaming for you? Does it work for what you do?

    • @LawrenceAaronLuther
      @LawrenceAaronLuther 4 місяці тому

      @@LillySchwartz Thank you kindly for the response. As you've completed an album, that makes compete sense. Plus, having a business model like Spotify's where the more people listen to music the less the company makes via increased royalty obligations means they'll probably just get even worse with artist payment.
      I've submitted my first single to a distributor a few days ago and am waiting for them to process it, so unfortunately I have little to report thus far. My genre is perhaps even more niche than yours (drum and bass) so I have zero finacial gain expectations, just the desire to share, hence the decision to stream.
      I really admire your position on streaming, and your diligence with videos to share with us your music and process.

    • @LillySchwartz
      @LillySchwartz  4 місяці тому +1

      Oh d’n’b is niche these days? It was huge when I first started listening to it. I’ve just watched a long video on music promotion and it was quite the depressing picture I got from algorithmic music promotion. I will try it with singles though, just to see whether that actually works. Albums really don’t make sense on Spotify.
      I’m glad you find the videos engaging. They take a lot of time to make but I have a lot of fun making them, so that’s alright.

      @@LillySchwartz hey Lilly, thank you for your answer and the analysis. The social blade seems too far away at the moment. I am just at the beginning. It would be cool to have something like an Action-Cam and putting voice overs in different languages. Sometimes it is not easy trying new stuff which needs my full attention and concentrate on talking. A good idea with the face. But I can't show it. Quickwash is my alter ego like Loki or Joker. During my work I am different and I am afraid some people are too stupid to handle it. And I am afriad of gaslighting. There are too many hints where I am living and with the face it would be much easier. Like with the beer case as a dog basket on the bike. I mean I am cycling around 40km here. The people who see me have just to Look for a Heineken beer case as a dog basket and I am done . But thank you. I wish you a good week :-)

      Well, I get it, I also avoid having my location spotted. But then success on UA-cam is difficult enough without setting more hurdles for yourself. The question really is, would anyone you’re worried about actually care? People really have their own lives to worry about, they relatively narcissistically ignore everything and everyone around them. In my case I found that everyone was actually quite supportive. And I don’t see any controversial stuff on your channel either? It’s weird showing yourself on UA-cam, I know, but you get used to it surprisingly quickly. And my philosophy was always to just be myself. If anyone has a problem with that then that’s their problem, not mine. Otherwise I wouldn’t have been walking around with a Mohawk in a place where that always attracted the wrong kind of attention. By the way, if you’re worried about being spotted because of your floof box, you could spray paint that off camera. There are also other ways of making it harder to spot you if that’s your main worry. I just never show the outside of the house and don’t take pictures in the immediate vicinity. So far no problems with that and I’ve been doing this for quite a while already.

      Well, it can be a bit of a gamble, but there are plenty of good ones out there, at least in the US. I bought mine from a shop that checked it out thoroughly for me.
