the good news is that the book series is already finished, so the Game of Thrones folks don't have to worry about getting ahead of themselves and screwing up the ending.
Just hope that Netflix has the balls to give them more than one season. They're now notorious for cancelling shows prematurely.
I felt kinda bad for the Game of Thrones show runners, because it was a reasonable assumption that the series would be finished by the time they got to the eighth season.

It'll be easy for them to render 2D! I don't see how the the trailer invalidates the Dark Forest. There is a message received that was issued by the Trisolaran who was a pacifist. The only change might be the reasoning Ye Wenjie responds.
Unless some other studio offers them a new project like Disney did with Star Wars. That's why they didn't care to finish GoT properly, their heads were full of potential SW level fame and money. Thankfully they got jack shit. But could happen again with this series even if the books are written.
I will push any button if Netflix don't let this series end completely ,i swear.

@@jamesd5767 because it takes skill to create a trailer that doesn't give too much away, but also intrigues you enough to watch, and to match it with music that suits etc.. the person wasn't saying the people who created the show don't deserve awards, just that the people who put the trailer together deserve an award FOR THE TRAILER.

Have just finished reading Deaths End.. if they manage to produce a series that's faithful to the story and bring to life even half of the ideas in those 3 books I'll be seriously impressed..
I think the CGI departments should have 2D down by now.
It looks like most of the Chinese characters from the book are gone and the setting is now the United Kingdom (based on how so many of the cast have British accents) instead of China. So I wonder how faithful this will be to the story?

The Chinese version was very good. Dark, sticks to the book and manages to capture its ideas. It's a bit slow though, and there are some parts which you just feel like fast forwarding.
But overall, it's worth watching.

Binge watched this, amongst the best sci-fi stuff I've seen. Haa a sense of realism in it. Also, with so much yet to come, if executed well, this definitely has the potential to be one of the best Netflix shows ever.
I watched the whole serie in two days. It was amazing (have to admit that is the plot from the book what makes it a great serie thou) and now I'm at the middle of the first book 'cause I ain't wating for a full year and a miracle for Netflix to drop the second season. Peace

Those scenes in the book were so eerie and cool.
I wonder how much of this first season is going to focus on the attempt at solving the three body problem. From the trailer, it looks like only a minor part is within the virtual world. To be fair, it's a very hard trilogy to take to the screen.

The original book-version of the Three Body Problem is the only entertainment during my PhD study in Australia. (I still remembered the fresh, cold night around 1pm, I read the book under warm yellow light. 10 years already!

As someone who loves the books I don't know if I can enjoy this but i hope lots of people can. Liu Cixin deserves all the royalties he can get for writing a science fiction masterpiece.

I feel like a crazy person because I *didn't* enjoy the books. The concept was really interesting, but the writing style (or at least the translation style) and some of the plot beats really fell flat for me.

Never heard of the books and happened upon this while looking for a new series. So glad I've found it, only 1.5 episodes in and extremely excited about this one, but already worried about the being only one season out!
If you're sitting on the fence get off and watch this. Can't speak for fans of the books where high expectations might be held, but imagine even if a bit disappointing it's still a journey more than worthy of taking!

My favourite sci fi trilogy. Concepts are just wild. And keep getting wilder until the very end. Never been so wowed by ideas. All I'll say is that if this were to happen in real life, and it could, it'd probably be something like in these books.

The chinese TV show, albeit slow forwarding and with just a few scenes with a lot of people, looks to me more..feelings intense. Many times i put on pause, think and replay some scenes. 30 episodes of good storytelling, in my opinion.

I was disappointed that Cixin Liu signed away the rights to adapt his masterpiece to them. I hope they do not divert from the book and make it into a shitty show like they did Game of Thrones.

China already adapted the first book into a drama series called "Three Body" and it's available on youtube (if you want to search it type "three body tencent"). Very close to the original novel. You can check it out while waiting for Netflix's version.

Hopefully the books author has finished the series. Dave and Dan have proven themselves very skilled at adapting existing IP. The problem comes when they have to think for themselves, then we get the end of GoT.
The most painful thing to watch is smart people being written by 'dumb' people.

I loved how the author played with the hopes of humanity and of the reader in the build up to that scene, just to shatter them in a couple of paragraphs. Such a great execution of a realistic scenario

Hey. I just read the first book in the triology. Are they getting into book 2 with the show? I saw some things that aren't in the book.
The lady singing is Dinah Washington. It's from her song "This Bitter Earth" and her original sounds much different. She was a beautiful singer! "This Bitter Earth" has also been set to Max Richter's "On The Nature of Daylight" which was used in the movie "Arrival".
Listen to another version of This bitter Earth sung by Miki Howard, you would think she was channelling Ms Washington.
It's also in Shutter Island, amazing song.

IDK if they could do the actual ending of the book series - too many people won't get it or get too depressed. They will probably Hollywood Ending it, and by doing so ruin the whole story. It is by the makers of Game of Thrones, afterall

This was amazing and i’m so grateful you stuck close to the material and the inclusion of the cultural revolution scene. I am really hoping for a season 2. Too bad it got banned in China, everyone can do their research and see why. They do have their own version but they cherry picked the history bits and any parts that put their dictatorship under a bad light. Same party that committed those crimes is the same party in power now. But the show doesn’t hover over the fact. Its important backstory that just leads to a certain characters actions that without that info, her actions then made no sense.
Benedict Wong as Da Shi is absolutely perfect casting.

Yu He Wei is absolutely perfect as Da Shi, no disrespect to Benedict Wong. Yu He did such a good job he is getting a spin off for his performance. And trust me here, the viewership in China is quite large.
Too bad there’s probably no Wang Miao in this rendition. I’m only on episode 1 but there doesn’t seem to be a need for him

adjust your expectations considering the audience it was made for, and be thankful we are getting more sci-fi epics on the most prolific entertainment medium ever, which happens to fall during the during the golden age of TV for the best opportunity for something "close" to the author's work. But make no mistake to greenlight a complicated millenium spawning trilogy with concepts that are completely alien to a largely uneducated and ignorant american market, and you are just setting yourself up, and as adult who read these books, you should be smart enough to know better.

Did they change the sex and color of protagonists? Yes.
Did they change the script so people from the second book are here? Yes, they did.
Did they make new characters? Yes.
Is it a good show? Surprisingly, it's a really good show. I like it a lot.
This was one of the best sci-fi trilogies I’ve ever read. As amazing as the first book was, the second and third ones are insane. When you realize what the “dark forest” actually is (the name of the second book), you’ll be like “whoah, that’s crazy”. I hope the show lives up to the books.

The book isn’t good. People love to confuse trying to be smart with being profound and therefore good.
The show is full of woke tropes, enough bad acting that it ruins the few good actors, and cheap CGI that’s distracting and sometimes causes you to laugh when the scene is supposed to be serious.
It’s just bad. But Netflix has nothing, so we watched it. Sorry I did.
I rarely watch Netflix anymore and only keep it because all the people I share it with would get their own accounts if I cancelled.

Liu Cixin is an absolute genius! I watched his interview with Jim Al-Khalili on UA-cam. I think the next hundred years of sci-fi will be absolutely dominated by Chinese writers. The whole thing felt so fleshy and real, now I know why.

@@pepegalegoI would disagree. Even in this trailer (and others) there are literal moments from the book. That's a big step. Foundation has nothing. Not a single scene matches anything in the book.
I had more vibes from Ender's Game when the shuttle was approaching the station and you immediatelly knew what's the big sphere for. And even when a lot of book was cut out, it somewhat correlates with ideas.
Foundation doesn't. That's a story Asimov would not write.

I don't think Dungeons & Dragons would touch such a modern day campaign. Even if you keep the ruleset of it, people prefer to tie in their characters into the next campaign and that being about aliens wouldn't really be worth the company's time to invest in.

This was one of the BEST movie trailers I’ve ever seen and I knew immediately that I was going to start this series just based off that. Ramin Djawadi will be composing the soundtrack for the series. So, it's quite possible that this 'Bitter Earth' cover is his work. There's always that one piece on his soundtracks that I can't listen to enough. It would be nice if this music is included on the soundtrack as well.
It's hard to screw up the original song. It's already a masterpiece.

I'm highly sceptical about watching anything Dan and Dave have touched since their colossal mishandling of GoT, but this looks pretty good!
They wont be dragged down so much with RR's adhd plot path's and character sprawls, but yeah i share your concern.
To be fair this is based on a book, and when D&D have something to adapt, that’s where they really shine. When they have to come up with something, that’s where they fumble.

If this was an original production I would totally agree with you but this isn't such a thing and it seems to me that they demonstrated that they are quite capable in adapting a story that has already been written.

This is an incredible Sci-Fi book trilogy called The Three Body problem by Liu Cixin. a movie attempt was made and then a Chinese television adaptation was created and aired recently and now Netflix is creating this which I feel will be amazing! The books itself will blow your mind! As I’m watching the trailer, I can see how they are crafting plots and major moments from the book into visual representation and I’m really excited!
