Don't get me wrong. I love Bergonzi and grew up with the sound of him around the house and at the Met. His complete set of Verdi arias is a treasure. But the "Ahimè" at the end of the aria is unmusical, dated and, frankly, kind of provincial. Perhaps he saw it as a dramatic way of ending the aria. He could have done what Pavarotti did in recital which was to include the cabaletta that ends on a brilliant (hopefully) high note.
It’s very dramatic and wonderfully sung. Dated, unmusical, and provincial. Wow. Anything else which disturbed you? Perhaps you just don’t like the fact that Bergonzi did not have the ease or ping which defined Pavarotti. Pav did not have the musicality or elegance which Bergonzi was known for. Besides, maybe B was tired from singing several pieces already.
He is THE Verdi Tenor!
Quest'aria meglio di così credo che non si possa cantare...

Mr Bergonzi owns the aria he just sang. He defines bel canto. He remains of my favorites. He brings tears to my eyes. JW-RM6 Miller SD USA
Ottima performance!!!
Now this is how to sing Verdi. Beauty of line, beauty of attack, simply amazing and unsurpassed

Additionally, Bergonzi was already 56/57!years of age. The Met tried to fire or remove his contract. He sang this piece wonderfully.
Imenso bergonzi.
