They did not kill the kraken. Rare has also said the kraken will evolve as an enemy and can differ from every update

I was playing a squad and literally 2 hours ago (March 20th, Sea of Thieves Release day). And we found the kraken for the first time but it was only one tentical, and it wasn’t even doing anything, it just stood still and when we rammed our ship into it, it still did nothing, it just merged through our ship and we bombarded it with cannons and shots for a good 20 minutes and nothing happened, I think it was a glitch since the game just came out and there are some more glitches in the game today.
That's the sequel. I also hear they're actually adding content in that one (quote me later, I guarantee this is what they'll say, assuming Rare survives this).
