Vickie and Carol have such perfectly defined characters, and they have the bulk of the heavy lifting in these Family skits, but lets take a moment to appreciate what Harvey has done with 'Ed' He's such a hen pecked bumpkin, with just enough intelligence to realize he's never going to amount to more. Korman really does excellent work with Ed.

I like the Eunice that could have been, if she'd had a functional family. You see it sometimes. She wants to be sweet and loving, until she gets swatted down. But Eunice as she is now has too many triggers. You would never know what would set her off and she'd blow up in your face. She'd be tiring to be around!

Poor Eunice, can't even get a lousy break ! The favoritism is so blatantly obvious, that she really gets my sympathy! I love all of the screaming and sniping at each other that they do, cuz it really is funny as all heck !! It is truly hilarious, and I love, love love it !!!

This skit comes from the original "The Family" set of sketches from the Carol Burnett Show. "Mama's Family" was created later. I liked that OK but it was never as good as this original with Harvey Korman.
Mama plays the "long suffering martyr" exactly like my mother. Also the cutting remarks interspersed throughout. Probably why I relate so well with the skits including Mama.
Now, I don't know where they are supposed to be from. I am from Southern West Virginia, deep in the Appalachian mountains. I'm telling you, right now, Mama's accent is exactly like me and my family's. Either Vicki Lawrence is from there, or she is very very very talented at pinning accents in her roles. It's not an area people travel too often, and it's a very unique accent to that area. It sounds semi southern at first, but it's not really southern. Either way, this was probably the most incredible sitcom to ever be on television. Vicki Lawrence and Carol Burnett were probably the best actors on television of all time. I'm only 25 years old, but I remember getting up to get ready for school two hours early just so that I could watch it on TBS at 5:00 a.m. before I had to go to classes. I did it everyday. It helped me get through the day. :-)
There's not a "joke" in the bunch but these people are comic geniuses and make every situation funny and touching at the same time. You know they really love each other even though they frequently can't stand the other's company, just like real families.

Brilliant acting and execution of their lines! The script is substantial, and rapid pacing of the dialogue, a good memory is one of the fundamentals of great acting.
I grew up watching this show every week (the second half of its run, too young for the early years), and it was funny then, when it didn't go over my head! But watching it now, I'm so struck by the genius of the performances. These are brilliant actors.
I watched this as a kid in the 70s and it cracked me up. I remember this episode very well. Now we know that this behavior is narcissistic and passive aggressive.

Watched a previous short episode and got to the heart of the dysfuction between these two: Mama got pregnant with Eunice and had to get married. Eunice did the same thing with Ed only Eunice didnt know until she attempted to tell mama why she married Ed, during one of their fights. Explains a lot about the tension between the two characters. Love me some, “The Family.” These three really dig into dysfunction! Such Brutal, insane, dialogue. I have known many people just like this. Narcissistic people, are unable to fathom why folks avoid them. Vicki, is fantastic. Her and Carol are like professional All -world Tennis players. Just no side shots. Back and forth, perfection. I know some very close people like this, I won’t name no names.
Overall, I think Mama being so ruthlessly crabby is what makes these skits so funny. The comments she makes "my goodness this glass is sticky," and "you can take this orange juice now; you put too much water in it.," is just so bitchy funny lol. And it just goes on and on. I always LOVED these skits on the show.

I believe I saw this when it originally aired when I was in high school. It bowled me over then and it still does at age 66. It is brilliant, hilarious satire. I still watch Mama's Family over and over, know most episodes almost by heart. It's now on the ME Network. Every character is perfect --- Eunice, Ed, and Mama. (And later Vint, Naomi, and Iola.) Some episodes are almost painful with the dysfunctional dynamics so perfectly captured. But mainly it is just funny. I don't think it ever got the acclaim it deserved. Should have won a shelf full of Emmies.
I always felt sorry for Ed, such an innocent in all their squabbles and he gets roped into it all the time. I've known guys like this and always felt sorry them. I can see why some men run for the hills after the kids are grown.
I feel sorrier for Ed. He's the one going to work every day trying to keep a roof over his families head and all he ever gets is nothing but disrespect from both Eunice and her mother.
Actually, they did go off script on at least one episode. Carol cracked up at one of Vickie's (or Mama's) insults, then Vickie started ad-libbing more, cracking up Carol and Harvey further.
Thank you Carol Burnett for bringing us true hilarious and original entertainment that everybody loves, and can't wait for the next weeks show that we all look forward to!
Perfectly understandable to me. Family isn’t always blood. It’s the people in your life who want you in theirs. The ones who accept you for who you are. The ones who would do anything to see you smile, and who love you no matter what.

Although I laughed myself silly when these episodes were first aired in the 1970s, I now see them as very perceptive and indescribably sad. Carol said these were her favorite skits because they mixed comedy and tragedy.
Now that I'm watching them again, I'm seeing the same thing. There were some really sad moments. The writers were brilliant at weaving them together.
Some times find. Rmories and some time not it was tough growing up then everything had to be super clean and you waited on your momma and daddy and and foot now days the kids communicate thru social media or you do t whete from them

Poor Eunice, mama is unfair, she love Elen more than Eunice who is always there for her. This is the reality in family life which can turn into a siblings rivalry. Hope she'll treat them fair and equally.... 💔

I believe I saw this when it originally aired when I was in high school. It bowled me over then and it still does at age 66. It is brilliant, hilarious satire. I still watch Mama's Family over and over, know most episodes almost by heart. It's now on the ME Network. Every character is perfect --- Eunice, Ed, and Mama. (And later Vint, Naomi, and Iola.) Some episodes are almost painful with the dysfunctional dynamics so perfectly captured. But mainly it is just funny. I don't think it ever got the acclaim it deserved. Should have won a shelf full of Emmies.
I always felt sorry for Ed, such an innocent in all their squabbles and he gets roped into it all the time. I've known guys like this and always felt sorry them. I can see why some men run for the hills after the kids are grown.

I feel sorrier for Ed. He's the one going to work every day trying to keep a roof over his families head and all he ever gets is nothing but disrespect from both Eunice and her mother.

This is great acting, How they could keep in on point without dying with laughter is amazing.
Actually, they did go off script on at least one episode. Carol cracked up at one of Vickie's (or Mama's) insults, then Vickie started ad-libbing more, cracking up Carol and Harvey further.

Perfectly understandable to me. Family isn’t always blood. It’s the people in your life who want you in theirs. The ones who accept you for who you are. The ones who would do anything to see you smile, and who love you no matter what.
So many people say that.. You gotta do what you gotta do sometimes.
