Heat setting won’t work too good with the painted thread and it will still come off due to the powder in the paint stick. If you add a little bit of vinegar to your food colors when making your dye they tend not to bleed if they get wet again. She called it a Hank because that’s what yarn, or in this case crochet cotton, is called before it’s wound into a ball. I have so much crochet cotton that I’m definitely going to be doing this! Thank you so much for always bringing us back to the basics. You are truly a gem dear.

My mum used to dye my t-shirts with food dye , back then when the t-shirts were made out of 100% cotton . I would have the right colour to match with my other bits of the outfit . Used to be a matchy matchy girl . Thank you for sharing , great tutorial and now I can dye my embroidery threads to fit my needs .Edit :Would , placing the coloured water and the thread in a zipp plastic bag , make the whole process much easier and help with mass making ?! Just a thought ...

Thank you for your sweet comment :) I did figure out the food coloring does run if it gets wet. But now I use it for color wicking thread and let it run on my projects on purpose, it is fun :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy

Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful ingenuity and skill to give us a fun green option. When I try this, I will dunk the dyed thread in an epsom salt solution to see if that locks in the food coloring long-term. 💚

I want to share my lace tip, since you brought up to get lace curtain panels at the thrift store and cut up or dye for projects.
I found so many different designs in different types of curtain panels. I cut up paper sheet sized chunks and when I'm coffee dying and food color dying paper time, I spray the dye water or coffee on my sheets of paper, that I layer on top of my Excalibur dehydrator trays, then lay the fabric pieces in between papers that are too juicy. If I want darker papers, I dip in dishpan of premixed dye water. I then layer paper piece then a lace piece then another paper piece. I've really been enjoying dying junk mail papers and they don't take long to dry in the dehydrator either. Depending on how you stack the pages and lace pieces you get very interesting bits of designs many papers are different on both sides of paper but the stacks on top of each other are more controlled designs. With plain copy paper very nice visible papers but on printed mail interesting bits for smaller areas to be used for snippet rolls or clusters etc. I have a stash of food colors!! The cake decorating colors are even more intense and messier so using the food colors is best. I also bought off a local Facebook group, a whole bag of cotton ivory colored cotton crochet thread, when I met up with the lady, she said, I'll give these to you for free, if you will finish my mom's table doiley. I looked over the design on the finished edge that she had managed to finish about 5 inches of probably a 70 inch round finished piece. I said, yes, I believe I can figure out this pattern and finish it for you!!! She was so happy, and so was I!! I got 8 big rolls and the tote bag that belonged to her mom and she got the finished piece to remind family of their matriarch. It took only a portion of one roll to finish it. Now let me tell you. I'm not a crocheter by pattern so she found the right person cause I'm a look at something and mess with it til I figure out what I think is original pattern. I used to sit with my granny and try to learn how patterns worked and how to read a crochet pattern. I can do it but I'm a rebel about some things!! I do follow a pattern to create cross bookmarks but if I'm making a handbag or a simple table cover I do what makes the work easier and faster!
Another tip. Which is now getting expensive, but if I need certain color and types of fabric for a particular fabric project, I shop thru the clothing and buy clothing to tear apart to get the piece I need. It's especially nice to do this type fabric gathering during thrift store bag sales!! This is how I also make my sari ribbon. Cut up bag sale clothes!! Lots of variety this way!!❤

Hi Amy, I am going to try this with a skein of white DMC floss. Basically, because I prefer having thread that I can divide for stitching variations. I also really like DMC floss. This will definitely be less expensive than purchasing variegated floss. I can get a white skein for .59 whereas the variegated skeins range in price from 1.59 to 2.59 in my area. And what I really dislike is the color changes are so spaced out you have to be really working on a large area to ever see the color shift. I like to work mainly on 5"squares. Doesn't work well on that size. Thanks for sharing. Also, I did start on my fabric roll. I will send you a picture once I finish if you would like one. I will be making my spool, too! It will probably take a couple of weeks. As always, thank you for sharing your time and talents. Stay safe.

Thank you for your sweet comment :) That will be a great savings, I didn't realize there was such a difference in the price of the plain color and the variegated:) I would love to see a picture of your fabric roll, I haven't gotten very far on mine yet :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy

Hello. One tip I was given if you have the colors bleed on to your hands use vinegar on the string after you color it. it locks the color into the string or fabric or paper too. My mom had told me too to use it on the dmc floss because it will bleed after a while. Hopefully this helps some.

I have also tried to dye the threads for bobbin lace making and tatting. I have tried fabric paint, inktense pencils, not food coloring. Both wash out and will leave very pale colors. If you dont wet it, then its fine, but i make bookmarks, and bracelets, necklaces, doilies etc and I need them to be washable. I told one person about this years ago, and she got all over me calling me a liar, lol. I have contacted the fabric paint companies and asked them why it didnt work on the thread, 100 percent cotton. You know what they said? 'its not fabric" !!! I tood the inktense classes and they showed them being used on canvas i think saying they are permanent. I think they heat set it when it was done, i cant remember. I think they stain, more than the dye, or paint? on fabric. I havent tried them on a fabric at all. The sheen? comes from the thread making process, after its twisted its then flamed, or burned to remove all the fine ends from the bits being twisted together. That creates the sheen.
Spray set? not sure what you mean. More about the inktense. They are meant to be used with water, either like you showed, brush to water to inktense, or inktense to paper then brushed with water. For the last, it will always show the mark where you first applied it, even though it will spread the color out. So that color coming off on your hands is still water soluble, and if you rinse it till that color stops? it will be pale pale pale. Ill have to try the food colors and see what happens when you rinse with water.

Thank you for sharing your experience with us all, the food color is not permanent either, so I use it in mixed media, and the running of color makes it fun to play with :) tfw, and I hope you have an Outstanding Day :) amy
