Great review. I've got a -9A and get very similar numbers. And you're so right, it's low-speed handling is superb.

Thank you, @DougGarrou. It is nice to know there's consistence inRV performance around the world! Best regards from the Fly&Tell team!

Ditto. My numbers as per Van's site and the grin only gets bigger as the years and hours add up.

I was already missing those little big flying machines. Concise and straight to the point. Very good!!!

What a lovely machine. I'm lucky enough to have flown a few times in the RV-9A. Keep up the good work, guys! Nice video!

I have never seen an RV with a baggage area fuel tank...very cool. Nice video as well.

Thank tou very much, @RV9flyer 13B Rotary. The extra fuel is a welcome feature down here in Brazil, where airports with Avgas available are few and far between. 😉

From what I understand, the RV 9 will actually cruise faster at very high altitudes than the 7 or 8, due to the wing design (whereas they’re a bit slower than the 7 or 8 at lower altitudes).

      Bons voos!

I have a friend who has a RV9. Does the canopy handle on your plane get in the way?

Your CHTs are pretty high.. surprised to see 430 in climb and 400 in cruise.. my 360 RV-4 stays around 385 in climb and 330-360 in cruise.. I’m in Las Vegas, so it’s hot here too!

You’re right, maybe the baffles need some tweaking. Thank you, Thomas!

@@flytell6864 you’re welcome! Also, in your climb, I see 29 LPH, which is 7.66GPH, that’s not enough. You should be probably 12GPH or 45 LPH in the climb.. and climb at 110 to 120 knots to get more airflow. I realize that negates some of the benefits of the CS prop, but that’s what these cowlings need for cooling.

We were not using full throttle at that moment, hence the anemic fuel burn.
Unfortunately we did not record a full power climb on that day.
      Thank you again, Thomas!

I too noticed the temps were high in the cruise, my hottest cylinder is 390deg in cruise on hot days at 2400rpm. Slowed down the temps are considerably lower. I have 150hp engine, fixed pitch. economy cruise I see 118kt at 2100RPM burning 19ltr/hr. (The prop is not a fast cruise prop). The stall on mine is 40-42kt,. its a real climbing and short field capable aircraft, operating out of 457m (1500ft) is no problem. I climb at 100-110kt which helps cooling and only key thing is to get the takeoff flaps retracted before going through flap limiting speed. Its a awesome machine! Thanks for your review video, very thorough and a delight to watch.

I'm too tall to fit in an RV-12, could I fit in an RV-9?

@coasternt3091 , our pilot is 6ft 2in and fits in the 9. Not much room to spare, though...

Lots of adjectives and a few performance numbers. Lots of gee whiz statements, but no real comments on handling characteristics, for example, or tricks on how to get the most from it.

Thank you for the observation, @Ed Cew. We at Fly&Tell wouldn't know how to extract the most from an RV-9, since all the experience we have in it was the little time we spent flying for this video. Our goal was to show the basic performance numbers and give a general picture of the aircraft, something we are confident we have accomplished, not only with the RV-9 but with all planes we've tested so far. We appologise for our lack of knowledge on the type. For real specialists the best source of information on RVs would be the VAF site, by Doug Reeves. @VansAirForce. There, we are sure you will find all the details you might want to.
      Safe flights!
