Camping in HEAVY SNOW & RAIN - A Solo Adventure
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 вер 2024
- For this camping adventure I hike into the Temple Valley in the South Island of New Zealand to go camping in the snow. This is the first heavy snowfall for the season. The walk in was in heavy rain, and it poured and poured as I set up the tent. The snow started to fall around my campfire as I relaxed in the evening, and then the snowstorm hit and it snowed heavily overnight. So much so that I was up four times in the night knocking the snow off the tent and tarp. I awoke to an incredible view. It wasn't an easy camp, and there were challenges that really tested me, but to me that is what the challenge of the outdoors is all about, overcoming challenges and the satisfaction of achievement. I really hope you all enjoy coming along and joining me on this trip.

Great vid. Re wet boots. Once at camp, put on dry socks, the put plastic bags on each foot, then put wet boots back on. Your feet will be warm & dry & the warmth will help to dry your boots out for the morning. Sometimes, I even tramp out wearing the plastic bags over my socks lol. It really works & great if you need to get firewood, toilet etc at night
That is a great idea! I actually did that on a previous trip using the bread bags that I had brought Indi's dry dog food in and it worked a treat. Sadly on this trip I literally did not have a bag bigger than a snack bag. Oversight on my part for sure.
Sorry I haven't commented for the last couple. I did watch them I suffered a loss and wasn't up to commenting sorry. I felt for you on this but you got your snow. I kept watching that big lump of snow above you thinking oh no it's going to fall on you. I'm really glad you found your saw that made me smile. Sending love from Scotland x
Oh Jackie, I am so sorry to hear you suffered a loss. It' lovely to know you watched and enjoyed the past videos even if you were up to leaving a comment. Sending love back you way.
Wonderful. A perfect adventure to watch from my warm chair. This video had everything I love.
So pleased to hear it Paul!!
Great video Cathy. Winter & snow camping are my favorite videos to watch. Thank you for taking the time to produce the video for all of us to enjoy. Take care & enjoy your weekend.
Thanks John. I am so glad you enjoyed the video. I hope your weekend is great too. Cathy
Glad that you found the saw, saws, axes, all become old friends and when you misplace them it is like losing an old friend. I always try a strip of orange tape onto the handle of all my tools, it makes it so easy to find (even in the snow). When I finish writing this, I'm off for the KB long weekend, into the misty, cold Tararuas. Enjoyed your video. ATB Cheers from the North Island. 😊😊
You are so right, you learn to rely on your favourite pieces of gear and can feel quite lost without them. Have a great time in the Tararuas!!
Girl you making my mouth water with that dinner u cooked we live in South Carolina USA , my wife and I are waiting on a dinner invite even if over seas , we love your channel awesome job
Haha, I love it. If your user name is submarinechef though, you might be doing the cooking. PS thanks for your kind words.
Beautiful scenery with the snowfall.
Yes it was!
Great video and great job just letting things happen as they sometimes do..
Thank you Solo Soul.
❤ Glad that you found your saw and do not have to buy another one. Great video Cathy😊
Oh my goodness, yes, me too! As it is I was out today looking to replace my boots, gaiters, and trekking pole, which have all worn through. SO glad not to have to be buying a saw too. Thanks for commenting. cheers
Loved this one, Cathy! Thank you!
Thank you. I am so glad you did. Thank you very very much for the support. You are awesome.
Its a good vlog you made .stay safe in,those weather conditions like all your vlogs are great to watch
Thank you! Will do!
Great adventure. I admire the way you push through all situations and weather conditions you encounter. As a back packer myself, you are such an inspiration!!!!!✌🏼
That means a lot coming from a fellow back packer. Thank you.
Thank you Kathy, you’re a legend ❤
Thanks so much!
I really felt for you in this vlog....hugs. you did a superb job!
Thank you so much! P.S your horses are the cutest!
@adventureot aww thanks. They are pretty hard work tbh ( well one is anyway lol) but it's worth all the extra effort☺️
Thanks for the video Cathy, something little to put towards your new boots ❤
Thank you so much Shinata. That is very very kind of you and will be such a help. Cathy
Oh you made me happy. Thanks for allowing us to see you get to your car. Safety is first…..
You are very sweet. Thanks Shirley.
HI 👋 Cathy again. Omgosh what an Adventure, this camp is action packed, but not the kind you want 😵💫but your a trouper and you always soldier on regardless your strongerthan you think🎉. I love your little fire box did the job👏,yippee you found your saw 😅 I think everyone was relieved for you 😂❤maybe you did make the right decision leaving, that snow definitely started to built up high around your camp😮.Absolutely stunning location, Thankyou so much cathy as I said your a real trouper ❤From Me V and Willow ,the land down under GODBLESS ❤❤❤Ps the Voices where probably Able 😂😂
Ha ha, I wish, could have definitely have done with some help to saw the firewood.
Yay! You found your saw!!! 🤭
Phew! So glad I did. I hate spending money on replacing things that were my mistake.
Great video
Thank you so much Mourad.
You are by far, my favourite camping You Tuber. That was a tough camp and you experienced it all but well done and thanks for sharing your amazing adventures with us 😊🙏
That is so cool, thank you Richard!!
I love this video. Beautifull adventure in the snow time and lovely mountains in the final moments. Greetings from Spain💌
Thank you so much. I am glad you enjoyed it.
Loved this ! Cant beat a snow camp 👍😁
Thanks Ally! I agree, there is something special about it when you are from a part of the world where, yes it snows, but you have to go to a lot of effort to get to the spot where it is. I loved this, crazy I know, probably the hardy Scottish heritage I have (ha ha).
@adventureot the hardest adventures are always the most rewarding , and yeah you definately have the Scottish grit in you 😁👍🏕
There’s always going to be challenges in camping and for the most part you take them in stride. Losing your saw could’ve ended up being traumatic but it wasn’t and I’m glad you found it. I’ve never camped in snow but I think if I did I would get under the trees so the snowfall wouldn’t be so heavy on my tent. I could be wrong. It’s happened before, at least once.
Thanks Claude. I looked at those trees and wondered about camping under them, but I was excited about trying my tent out in the snow. Now that I have done it I can be sensible next time (lol).
U. Need. To. Get. A. Longer. Raincoat. To keep ur. Trousers. Dry.. but. Great. Video
U. Need. Wellington. (Rubber ) boots
Yes great minds think alike. It's on the list, lined (insulated) wellington boots.
I agree. My last raincoat was longer (and heavier). This time I went for lighter and shorter. There is always a pay off. Oh well.
Love the fact you are out there doing it . Keep up the excellent videos
A tip I use is to use plastic bags over my Sox’s to my wet boots don’t make my feet cold .
Yes, great idea. Someone else suggested that and since this camp that is what I did, until I bought some waterproof socks for moving around camp in.
Thank you so much. I appreciate the encouragement as it really helps.
Yummy 🎉from Atlanta Ga ❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉
Thanks for watching.

Another ENJOYABLE Vid
So glad U found the sword n when U were able to drive out
P.S I'm glad U left 'Indi dis time 😊
Till then ✌️ 😎
Thanks Vivian. I knew the true Indi lovers would understand my reasons for not bringing her on this one. I'll make the snow camps more comfortable and then she will be my VIP for sure!
Hi Cathy. Callum from BNE 🇦🇺
We had a coolish and overcast day here on Saturday so your snow-themed video was very fitting. I then binged on your other videos over the weekend and the trend has continued when I come home from work. I’m thinking of a wee holiday to NZ soon for a winter trip and might do some exploring in Southland having been inspired by your vids.
I so resonated with you about losing something and it was great you found your favourite saw. Well done! 👍
Take care. And thanks for sharing your outdoor journeys. C
Oh you are so welcome Callum. So glad I am inspiring you. NZ is not the easiest or cheapest place to get to, but if you love the outdoors you won't be disappointed. By the way, unless you are on the southern part of the West Coast of the South Island you won't experience relentless rain, even though it is almost always raining in my videos. I go out of my way to seek that out. NZ has some lovely weather, especially in Winter, you can get cold southerly systems for sure, but then great settled weather. Thanks for watching.
I am so happy you found your saw. Whew. The snow was beautiful. And kudos for carrying that back pack. I think it is bigger than you are. Lol
Thanks Nancy.
well Cathy, I'm glad you found your saw. I know things didn't work out how you planned . I think that's why I never really plan anything, and using my logic , if I don't plan then nothing can go wrong. it's all just part of the adventure. But that forest full of snow is spectacular.
Dwayne
Thanks, well said. I think you are right, if you have a set idea of how you want or need things to go you will often be disappointed out in nature because there can be so many variables. Be prepared for anything is a good way to go about it I think. That way whatever happens you can make something of it.
Hello, I'm a new subscriber. I like how brave you are to get out and camp by yourself. Look at all that snow ❄️ brrr
I am so happy you found your saw.
The worst part of camping is packing up and leaving 😫 😒 boo-hoo!
Thank you for sharing and for all the hard work and time you put into your awesome videos.
KEEP ADVENTURING
GOD BLESS YOU
Thank you so much MegaSusanc. Welcome to the channel.
Thanks!
Thanks so much Melinda. That is very kind of you. It will be put to excellent use. Have a lovely day. Cathy
Hi from Adelaide, South Australia. Love your video and the snow is just beautiful. As I was watching, I thought that you would find your saw and you did - that's great !! Looking forward to more of your snow camping and hopefully some new waterproof boots 😊👍
Thanks Carrie.
Wow what a difference a night makes! Glad you stuck it out to see the beautiful scenery in the morning!
You are so right. It was well worth it. All is fine once you are in a warm sleeping bag and can sleep off any stress or emotion from the day before.
Sorry about your camp trip, but it looks like it did go ok for you in the end. Thank-you for sharing your camping experience. Hugs from Brisbane Australia. 😊
Thanks Michelle. It had its challenges but was really enjoyable nonetheless the less. Thanks😊
Brilliant Cathy! I really look forward to all your videos always! Thank you for taking us all along 😃
Thanks so much Pranesh.
Crazy to think its winter somewhere else 😃
So true, I feel like that when I watch people from the Northern Hemisphere swimming on their camps right now.
A little trick I've not seen on many camping vids, you probably know. A little moat for run off around the tent. It got me though a couple of rock festivals on the West Coat.. You got that little mound just perfect.
Yes, great idea. The moat is so satisfying isn't it. You get to watch the water run away (sometimes towards the other guys tent though, tee hee). I had the shovel at the ready, but didn't need it in the end.
Ill need to rewstch this video in several months when winter is approaching here in the midwest USA. Right now, we are just getting into summer, so looking forward to warm weather camping!
Oh yes, I bet you are. Hopefully it is a good summer for you guys.
Hi there just found your channel and love it, great video

@@adventureot most welcome Cathy take care good night from fiji island
Thanks!
Thank you so much!! Much appreciated.
Omg you were brave lighting that in your jacket 😅
Haha, yes that crossed my mind too.
What a fantastic downfall of snow. The landscape looked stunning. Such a challenging camp for you this time though you managed to fill it with some classic quotes. The "I hear of voices" gave me a good laugh. Hope your feet a warm and dry now.
Thanks Rosie. You are so right, it was a challenge, but lots of wonderful moments, and those where I catch myself saying something and have a laugh with myself are always good ones.
Ok, I’ve decided you do this camping stuff pretty well. So I hereby like and subscribe. Nuff said.
Thanks Neil!
Cool camp setup ❤
Thank you
Someone else may have already mentioned it, but perhaps a fluro piece of cord or tape on the saw so it’s easy to spot? I’d be devastated if I’d lost one of those! Note to self also, must put some fluro cord on my own gear!😄 Love the vid, thx!
Ha ha, I love that, great idea. Thanks
Enjoying the video
So glad. Thanks for letting me know.
That was like stepping through a wardrobe into Narnia!! Welcome back to the saw LOL
It really was hey. I closed my eyes and when I opened them again there was a blanket of white.
🤣🤣🤣🤣loved your comment🥰
@@BigV96220 thanks, LOL
Hey! Great to see kiwi content. I am heading down your way next month. With the family, so will be camping but from the car. Hoping with all hope to have lots of snow!! Was considering the temple campsite as it kooks amazing. Will be over in glentanner and down through to mavora lakes. Beautiful country!!
Thanks Albert! That sounds like a fantastic trip you have planned. You can't go wrong with those spots you have chosen. That will be magical. If you do decide to head in to Temple Campsite just bear in mind that the designated DOC fire pit is not operational at the moment (unless they have fixed it in the last few weeks). The chimney appears to be damaged and they have roped it off. Have a wonderful time. I will have my fingers crossed for some snow for you next month.
I really do enjoy your camping adventures but thinking about your wet cold feet gave me chills. So maybe you can use this to get a nice warm waterproof pair of DexShell socks for future adventures! I’m only suggesting this brand because I looked up that they are highly rated. Glad you found your saw! Thanks again for your hard work to be able to share your adventures. 😁
Thank you so much Ev! I am literally heading on line to buy them now. So when you see me wearing them you can know you helped keep my feet toasty warm.
Things dont always go to plan unfortunately. All you can do is make the best of it and move forward!
So true. There is always something to learn from it hey. No point in dwelling on it if possible.
❤
Thank you
❤
Thanks
Like number484 OMG. How can you stand that cold😱
I was cosy when the fire was going and when I was wrapped up in my sleeping bag, and doing chores around camp kept me warm too. It wasn't all that bad.
So cold 😬 please stay comfy 😅
Oh it was SO cold, but I must say, when I was in front of the fire I loved it, and when snuggled in my sleeping bag I was toasty warm. All the other shots though.... brrrr, cold.
You needed some hot mulled wine after all that aggravation!
Yes please!!! That would have really hit the spot.
Good 😊 video where's the mushrooms? Stay safe out there love from America ❤️
Yum, that would have been perfect.
I’m always worried when I see how you set up camp and where you are putting your fire relative to your tent and tarp. Sometimes your camp looks precarious and in this video I’m shocked that when the tarp fell you didn’t set everything on fire.
I often think that when I watch other people's camps too, but the funny thing is when you are there in person you have all your senses to help you out and you really engage with your space and the conditions etc. Even though this looks close, and was, there wasn't a moment where I was at all worried about it. Felt really under control. Oh, and I pulled the firebox way out from under the reach of the tarp before I started adjusting it. Just as well in hind sight.
You need a pair of backup boots. You did well😊
That would have been great. Off this afternoon to (hopefully) but my new boots and waterproof socks. yay!!
Havent commented in a while. Guess it must be heading into winter there. That sure is some heavy rain and a lot of snow. Still camp looks cosy 😂
Lovely to hear from you again. Yes it was quite some weather, but as I am sure you guessed, that was just what I was hoping for. Thanks for watching.
Wonderful rain/snow camping video! Thanks for sharing your first heavy snowfall adventure of the season. On losing your saw, I have felt the same pit in my stomach when a piece of kit goes missing and you just had it moments before or just set it down and it somehow grew legs and walked away. How many cm of snow was that? Also, do you ever carry extra food / energy bars or emergency foods in case you were to have been snowed in while you were there? A great adventure in any case.
Thank you very much. The forecast was for 40-50cm of snow in the area. I think 40cm would be about right, as I was almost knee deep away from the tree cover. Yes on every camp I always carry an extra meal (that I could string out if I needed to). For this one I had a whole day of extra food with me, and more in the car, just in case.
@@adventureot Oh wow, that is a lot of snow indeed. I guess from the camera shots, it didn't look nearly as bad other than the deeper levels around the tent because of the snow that came off the tent and tarp. Whew, that is a lot of snow to go through without snow shoes. Hats off to you for trudging through that!
I tucked myself near enough to the trees that the cover was a bit lighter there. It was probably only 20cm around the tent. The walk out was fun, but wasn't too tricky because I was only about 100m of the track, which is a very basic track but is under tree cover so not too much snow there. What was a bit dodgy was crossing the river bed because I could not make out the rocks beneath the snow and was sure I was going to land in a hole or slip. All ok in the end though. I just took it very slow and probed the ground with my trekking pole before stepping.
As a tradesman you learn quick to keep tools in a particular place, so in your situation in a holster or on a karabiner on your person. Must be so hard filming this.
Ah man, I hear you. The more I do this the more my 'systems' are becoming so much more important. Things like having stuff in the correct bags, or colour coded for use, or put it back where you got it from etc. Yes, absolutely, the filming part is hard. The last thing you feel like doing when you have just got yourself sorted is to have to go out and move the camera for a new angle. But you do.
Hello, well looks like a few miss hasped . Lol, I’m sure you will figure out some improvements for next time. Please get some new boots, you have to take care of your feet out in the brush. Always enjoy your videos. Take care, Grace n KY
Thanks Grace. I appreciate your concern, and agree, I have ordered my boots so they are not far away.
The drama! I kept hoping you would find the saw and sure enough you did. Question: the poles you are using with the tarp, did they come with the tarp or are they separate. Brand name if purchased separately and are they lightweight? Great video Cathy!
Hi Chris. I had given up on the search, then for some reason just gave the ground a couple more taps, and yippee, there it was. The poles are (unfortunately) just standard metal awning poles from a family tent (my blue Zempire one). They are not light at all, so I only take them if the walk in is short. Ultimately I would like to find some light weight ones. I feel like Tony from AB Camping has used some in the past, just can't think where he got them. In all honesty for now (because I am replacing my trekking pole anyway), I am looking at carbon fibre light weight trekking poles, that extend high enough to act as tent poles too. I think for me that will be best for me. Thanks for the comment. Glad you enjoyed the video.
👍👍👍 .. Nice, very nice. The first snow of the season .. always a joy.
Herewith something shamelessly plagiarised from the Album Aqualung by Jethro Tull .. 🙄 ..

Sitting in the car park
Eying the Rain with eager intent
Alone but eager just to get out
Impatient hands opening car doors, hey OT Girl (more do, do do 's) .. 🎶🎵.
I'll stop there 👏👏👏. Obviously I have too much 'idle time' on my hands .. 😏.
Alone in the Car Park .. No, you are not crazy.
My Swiss Nordic Walking Colleagues probably think the same when I pitch up for our outings wearing Shorts and and set out wearing just a Fleece Top when everybody else is in longs and heavy jackets (+10°C = Shorts and 'be bold, start cold') and state, when rain is forecasted, that "the skin is waterproof .. its the clothing that gets wet."
Sitting under a shelter with a hot drink in hand and with the cats coming down (no dog/s this time .. wise choice) .. a nice time to 'Mull' .. and mulling is good.
Tasty-looking Nosh .. good comfort food 😋. And, all did eventually work out well (just some hiccups and a bit of indigestion along the way my Dear) .. you left for home in one piece. Adversity builds character .. and vocabulary 🤐😁.
A beautiful location .. thanks for sharing and until next time, take care .. Tommy
ha ha, thanks Tommy, your song captured the scene well.
@@adventureot 👍😁.

Love watching you! What size shoe do you wear
Hi Ranarch. Thank you, so glad you enjoy watching. I am a US 7.
@@adventureot how do I go about sending you shoes you can let me know what you want and I can order it or?
Oh you are so sweet! Thank you so much for the thought. I’m actually literally sitting in the car outside the shop and about to buy some. I don’t have a PO Box for deliveries yet, but will some time in the future. Your generous gesture is noted and appreciated though. Have a lovely day. Cathy
I noticed you changed the tarp configuration. Did it help?
Never mind
Haha, I am thinking the video answered that one for you.
How many liters was your backpack? I would really love to know. Thanks.
Hi Justin. It is 60 + 10 litres. So holds 60 in the main body of it and has an extendable top portion to squeeze more in.. ha ha. I always do squeeze more in.
Hot tent would have been nice.
Oh my gosh, definitely!! Next time hey.

Thank you so much.

Thank you for the kind thought.
This was the most prettiest looking camping in the rain …. ???? Gosh as a viewer we are stupid or as a blogger your a cheater….
Hi Raza. Your comment is hard to follow. I think you are suggesting I am deceiving people because my rain camp was too pretty. I am guessing you are not from New Zealand. This is what our country is like. Thank you for the complement though as I worked very very hard to capture it all on footage in a very challenging environment.
You are getting more confident and it’s showing in your lower voice even when you panicked 😊. Also nice to see you cooking more substantial food. Kent survival UK cooks good food and loads of subscribers because of it. You can imagine yourself eating it ❤
Thanks. I'm looking forward to some hot tent cooking over the wood stove where I can make things from scratch and really take my time with the process. That would be nice.
It was such a relief to find it.😊
❤
Thanks as always Jean!
