In the early part of the film, the crash survivors encounter huge skeletons. These creatures are the mature form of the bio-raptors that were too big to get underground after the previous eclipse phase ended.
No they were native creatures to the planet that the bio raptors wiped out
I always kind of assumed that the planet had an ecosystem Underground that the bio Raptors were part of hence why they were able to survive without any other life forms on the surface
Do more lore on the creatures on the Riddick universe
The bioraptors could be a type of invasive species like how people back then used animals to control populations on islands and countries. Except this is on a much way larger scale and in the far future

also they get really big. they hinted at that in the movie towards the end. i think the bid skellies on the plant were the big ones. they feed on each other and grow until they become huge and get attack by the smaller ones.
@Tyrell Suraiya there was no visible ear-bones on those big skeletons, except the one Riddick found later in the movie. How do u say the design is similar?

What if the Bio-raptors were native tot he world, but had been changed in someway in the past. Also the way the world was might not have always been that way, such as that in the past a disaster happened that changed the world into to it's current state slowly over time giving the raptors time to adapt. There is the idea that the state of the world we see in pitch black might be part of a cycle the world goes thru.
This would make sense. There are the remains of whale-like creatures on the surface, which suggests that it was once covered at least partially by water. If the planet had fairly recently been displaced so its surface was hotter, it may explain why only a few subterranean species survived.

There's just one thing i think that has not been mentioned. If i remember correctly, these creatures did seem to have this hidden blade inside their arms that extended to impale their prey. I think it was around the scene right before they learn the creatures are sensitive to light. But again, i could remember incorrectly, and be very wrong.

When I seen this as a kid it scared the shit out of me and I still have dreams about this movie!
Bioraptors vs xenomorphs.
The xenomorphs would win hands down. Once a bioraptor gets any damage on a xeno the acid blood would kill them or hurt them gravely. Since all their attacks are melee attacks. We have also seen that they are vulnerable to knives and any sort of melee weapons and attack. The xeno is basically a walking swiss army knife of blades. Worst of all, just wait for a facehugger to get on a bioraptor. Then it's Game Over, Man. It's Game Over! :)

Jemiah Carswell I think that would make for a great battle too! The Predators would find the bioraptors as a worthy hunt. Should see one of their skulls on the Predator ship in the new movie, that would be cool. Of course the Predator would come out as the winner here too. But, with the bioraptors numbers, and the young being able to fly. They would be a challenge.

This species doesn’t make sense to me. With a host of predators that numerous, you would need to have an absolutely abundant amount of prey in order to maintain the population. The planet however appears to be otherwise lifeless.
Noplayster13 They hibernate until the eclipse, kill the bulk of their population to feed, and then mate and give birth to their young when the suns come back out.
Or they’re continuously breeding and eating each other through out their life spans. That scene where they were killing each other could’ve been two separate hives of them clashing for all we know.
crypto1223 I’m not sure that’s possible. I know they don’t necessarily have to work like any earth species, but animals eat far in excess to their own biomass/reproduction rate. Carnivores can exist because there are lots of prey by comparison, herbivores can exist because of massive amounts of vegetation by comparison. This is sustainable because dead animals and plants fertilize the soil, recycling all the minerals and nutrients, creating more abundant plants, which creates more food for herbivores, ad infinitum.
It kinda seems like the raptors eating each other would just be continuously (and permanently) subtracting from the usable biomass. Imagine if wolves could only eat each other. One wolf would eat hundreds of others during its lifetime and only be able to reproduce a few times. You can’t get biomass from nothing, meaning any time a raptor poops you’d have to subtract that biomass from the species total (forever).
It's likely either a predator that slowly evolved over the course of tens of thousands of years, both in numbers and capabilities or an alien species brought over (perhaps accidentally) by humans or another alien species. I would say it's the ladder but the deep and complex underground caverns, even for a large and numerous species such as that, would take far too long to create if brought over and it wouldn't make sense for them to adapt so well to a planet otherwise completely inhospitable to them 99.99% of the time.
James Jaeger Hmm, that brings up an idea. What if they were a bio-weapon that was created by an alien race thousands of years ago, dropped on the planet, and wiped out everything living. They then go into suspended animation or something until more prey is sensed. It’s a cool idea, but if I remember the movie right, the planet is only ever dark once every 20 years or something. It would probably be the wrong weapon to use in that case since they can’t go into the light.

or the more plausible explanation, the moon suffered a cataclysmic mass extinction to where only the Bioraptors and Bioslugs are all that reminds of a dying ecosystem. All the plants died out first, then the herbivores, then the large carnivores, and all that is left are the bioraptors (who were probably the like the fox to their now extinct natural predator's bear). Possibly in the next hundred years the bioraptors will eventually go extinct, leaving behind the more smaller creatures. Think of any mass extinctions on Earth, the Permian or the Cretaceous, The earth was practically lifeless during the extinction event with smaller to tiny creatures just barely surviving. Its more logical for the Bioraptor being their planet's equivalent of the last surviving dinosaur before finally succumbing to extinction.

i don't understand why the bioraptors didn't kill everyone instantaneously once they were out in the open. All of the crew had light emitting devices yet half of them were still plucked away. So why not all of them? It didn't seem realistic at all that with an endless number of them around, one or two of the bioraptors would just occasionally grab another crew member. Can anyone explain?
The bioraptors were repelled by the light the group carried, but attacked whom they found vulnerable/alone or bloodied- paris, johns, jack, suleman...at diff times.
